To do this we surface mine oil sand, extract the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes, and upgrade that bitumen into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. Our final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend, is sent by pipeline to refineries in the Edmonton area and to pipeline terminals for shipment elsewhere in Canada and to the United States
