For over 50 years, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) has been a
leading-edge nuclear technology and services company providing services to
utilities worldwide. Over 4,000 highly skilled employees deliver a range of nuclear services: from R&D
support, construction management, design and engineering to specialized
technology, waste management and decommissioning in support of CANDU power
reactors and related products.
AECL is committed to supporting its Canadian and international
customers in all aspects of nuclear power technology management. We provide
on-site expertise, closely supported by our nuclear science laboratories,
testing capability and engineering facilities. CANDU reactors supply about 16%
electricity and are an important component of clean-air energy programs on four

AECL. AECL staff work on CANDU New
Build and reactor refurbishment projects around the world. The
refurbishment projects extend the life of existing CANDU plants by up to 30
years. These projects are currently
taking place at Point Lepreau in New Brunswick,
on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, and in South Korea. Refurbishment projects offer a mix of field
engineering site assignments and design engineering assignments, located at our
Head Office in Mississauga.
Two other major AECL initiatives include the development
of our Advanced CANDU Reactor, the ACR-1000, and the new dedicated medical
isotopes production facilities at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). The balance of our work is smaller projects
and support to operating CANDU stations worldwide.
AECL offers a comprehensive benefit package covering
supplementary medical including prescription drugs, prescription eye glasses,
sick leave, disability coverage and dental coverage. Vacation is three weeks in the first year
rising gradually with years of service.
Banking of extra hours of work is permitted to allow absences for
personnel business. In addition, there
is a shutdown at Christmas of approximately 10 days, which is mostly covered by
Statutory and Company Holidays. Hours of
work are 7.5 per day. Comprehensive
training is provided over the employees complete career, typically more
general and frequent in the early years and more specialized later.
