THE OPPORTUNITY: 

Our client, an established Public Accounting Firm with well established connections throughout the North West Territories and other areas in Canada seeks to engage an Assurance Manager to lead a team of auditors within its practice based in Yellowknife, NWT.

The individual sought will ideally have three to five years of audit / assurance management experience and a genuine interest in addressing the financial reporting and audit needs for a mixed portfolio of clients including small to medium sized owner-operated business, hospitals, municipalities, non-profit organizations, Aboriginal organizations and Government. He or she will focus on reducing the risk of material errors in the financial statements prepared for clients.

The Assurance Manager is expected to achieve client satisfaction in areas such as financial reporting, risk identification and financial planning opportunities. He or she is expected to assist the Partners in researching issues and providing pro-active financial reporting and financial planning alternatives. Transfer of knowledge to other professional staff is key task at this level within the assurance group.

The individual engaged will demonstrate a high level of commitment to client services and recognition and acceptance in meeting the goals and development requirements of the firm. Attitudinally, the individual engaged must be able to take on a "partner" as opposed to "employee" viewpoint.

The successful candidate must be able to bring a high degree of ethics, quality of work, professionalism and effectiveness to his or her role. He or she will aspire towards continuous professional and personal growth.

The Assurance Manager will gain the respect of Partners, all firm staff and clients. He or she will develop a professional and mutually co-operative working relationship with the staff. He or she will also build and maintain professional relationships with external contacts and professional and senior industry staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Managers act as role models for professional development, quality assurance and ethical behaviour.

Managers are proactive in the bottom-line management of multiple, concurrent engagements and productivity of the engagement staff.

 

Managers oversee budgeting and engagement personnel and perform detailed file reviews.

 

Managers bring engagements to full completion prior to final review and signature by the Business Partner.

 

Managers will take the initiative to understand, that is, to research, resolve and assume responsibility for all open engagement issues.

 

Managers finalize accurate and complete financial statements (including note disclosures), opinions and all client correspondence.

 

Managers will demonstrate effective staff development through strong leadership, appropriate delegation and by providing staff with timely and objective feedback.

 

Managers participate actively in the firm's mentoring program.

Managers will gain and maintain the professional respect and acknowledgement of all partners, audit staff and clients.

 

Managers will communicate effectively with professional staff and clients to enhance their understanding of business issues.

 

Managers will develop and maintain strong business relationships throughout the year with high level financial and management personnel at individual clients such as; owners, CFOs, Presidents, Audit Committee Chairs.

REQUIREMENTS:

Canadian CA designation. 

A minimum of 3 years public practice and management experience.

 

Prior high-level client contact to comfortably and effectively deal with clients and engagement demands.

 

Achieved a thorough understanding of clients' businesses which extends beyond accounting-related aspects.

 

Managers are expected to have high technical competencies and comprehensive working knowledge of firm's systems, software, research materials and quality control procedures.

 

Demonstrate strong leadership and organizational skills.

 

Through continuing personal development and self learning, Managers must update his or her knowledge of emerging trends, professional pronouncements and the application of new accounting and auditing standards and taxation in order to determine the potential impact of actions to a client's business. 

Fluency in English. 

Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills. 

Proficiency in software programs including CaseWare, CaseView, TaxPrep, MS Word and Excel.

 

Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure.

Superior analysis, problem-solving and people management skills.

COMPENSATION:

Excellent compensation - salary plus participation in several mutually exclusive bonus programs.

Total compensation will go well beyond the norm for positions at this level - six figures.

Overtime - anything in excess of 1950 hours a year is considered overtime (compare to many other accounting firms who base their salary on 2100 hours).
