Finanancial Analyst-Investment finance valuations (#244167)POSITION SUMMARY
The Candidate will be responsible for supporting the Investment Finance Valuation team within Investment Finance. The Private Investment Valuation team within the Investment Finance Division is responsible for analyzing and monitoring private investment valuations reviews for financial reporting purposes. The group oversees the valuations of over 200 privately held investments with a market value in excess of $40 billion, incorporating private equity, infrastructure, timberland, real estate and private debt. The Private Investment Valuation function is independent from the Investment Division and is not involved in executing or advising on deals.
The Candidate will assist the senior manager and manager in the review of the year end valuation process. This role represents an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge of investment valuations within the organization.
Responsibilities:
1. Supporting the planning and execution of the quarterly and year end valuation processes for private investments with a focus on infrastructure and timberland investments:
. Assist in the review of valuations prepared by the Investment Department, including detailed checks of complex financial models for infrastructure investments, preparing sensitivity analyses, and drafting of valuation reports
. Conduct relevant research, financial analyses, and calculations to show sensitivity analyses on value recommendations
. Review the fair value valuations prepared by external valuation advisors, and summarize/ discuss findings with Manager and Senior Manager
. Support the Manager in the development, tracking and reporting of plans and timelines to ensure an effective and efficient valuation process
. Assist in responding to queries/information requests of a factual nature from external auditors and advisors
. Communicate noted issues with respect to the valuation process or specific investment valuations to the Manager and Senior Manager on a timely basis
. Support the review and monitoring of external best practice valuation standards and practices
2. Supporting communications with the Investment Department with respect to the valuations including:
. Assist in coordinating processes and deliverables to facilitate the execution of a smooth quarterly and year end valuation process
. Support the manager in communicating noted issues with respect to the process and/or issues identified with respect to valuations
. Ensure exceptional service is provided to the Investment Department with respect to private investment valuations
. Help with responding to inquiries and requests from the Investment Department including consultation on new transactions where required
3. Assisting with the coordination of valuation information with other internal stakeholders / departments:
. Gather and document key financial and valuation assumptions used for the year-end valuations of private equity, infrastructure, and other investments
. Liaise with other internal departments / stakeholders to oversee / coordinate data collected from the year-end valuations in accordance with their requirements
Competencies Required:
. Valuation and Finance Knowledge - Experience in the application of various valuation approaches such as discounted cash flow, precedent transactions, and comparable company multiples. The individual must be able to apply fundamental finance concepts, including enterprise vs. equity cash flows, time value of money, WACC calculation, among others.
. Attention to Detail - The successful candidate should have a proven record of producing work with minimal errors while working under pressure. The role is well-suited to individuals who have developed best practices in self-review, have a keen eye for details, and take ownership and accountability in the deliverables.
. Multi-Tasking Skills - During peak periods, the individual is expected to process multiple valuations concurrently in order to meet tight deadlines. This requires the successful candidate to stay organized, work well under pressure, and handle competing demands confidently.
. Analytical Thinking and Financial Modeling Skills - Strong analytical thinking, variance analysis, and financial/cash flow modeling skills are important to the execution of the valuation review process. Having a comfort level in reviewing large and complex financial models is important.
. Verbal and Written Communication Skills - This position requires the preparation of written memorandums and analysis of valuations prepared by the Investment Division. Strong written communication skills are required to ensure that Investment Finance's memorandums are written clearly and concisely, and are logical in supporting the Investment Finance's recommendation of fair value.
Knowledge and Experience:
. Relevant university degree
. Obtained or working towards professional/ graduate designation(s) strongly preferred (MBA, CFA, CA, CBV or FRM)
. At least 5 years of work experience is required with knowledge in private business valuations is strongly preferred
. Knowledge and/or practical experience with investments in infrastructure and regulated companies is an asset
. Proven analytical skills strongly preferred
. Demonstrated proficiency in handling, reviewing and/or preparing complex Excel-based models
. Knowledge of Capital IQ, Bloomberg, and/or MS Access strongly desired
