The School of Health & Public Safety has a need for an energetic and resourceful individual with great organizational skills to provide instruction in a theory and laboratory setting in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. 


Under the direction of the Academic Chair the major teaching responsibilities for this position will be in both General Sonography and Echocardiography program streams.  Course deliveries will focus on Basic Scanning, Patient Care, General and Echocardiography lab supervision.  There may also be a component in Practicum which will require travel throughout Central and Southern Alberta and through major centres in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.


This position is full-time permanent (1.0 FTE) starting 02-January, 2014 and involves a total of 608 hours of instruction (approximately 20 hours of teaching per week).




  • Provide a high quality of education for students
  • Prepare and deliver lectures and lab demonstrations to students enrolled in the program and potentially to other programs in the School of Health and Public Safety
  • Prepare lists of equipment and supplies required for the Educational Technologist
  • Evaluate student progress through assignments, exams, lab and clinical practicum competencies
  • Facilitate student achievement through mentorship
  • Continual updating course outlines and modules ensuring current practice standards and National Competency profile content is delivered in theory and laboratory classes
  • Contribute in a positive way to maintain a “team environment” within the DMS program and School of Health and Public Safety
  • Promote professionalism and role modelling for students
  • Provide feedback for continuous program improvement
  • Participate in program and School meetings
  • Promote and support SAIT Polytechnic  and the School of Health and Public Safety mission statements, strategic and academic plans
  • Remain current in field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Remain registered with Sonography Canada
  • Contribute to program quality improvement ensuring continued compliance with Canadian Medical Association accreditation requirements
  • Other duties as assigned within the DMS program and School of Health and Public Safety




The successful applicant will be a registered, dual credentialed (Generalist Sonography and Echocardiography) Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with at least 5 years of recent clinical experience in a diagnostic imaging department.  The applicant must be registered with the Canadian Association of Registered Diagnostic Ultrasound Professionals/Canadian Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (Sonography Canada) and/or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or be eligible for registration.  The applicant must also possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive in a team environment.  Basic computer skills such as the ability to use word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, the internet and communication software is strongly recommended.  Previous teaching experience is an asset as are additional educational qualifications.  The applicants must have a somewhat flexible schedule to accommodate the student’s timetable and practicum travel.
