Piping and Welding Supervisor (#274772)

Position: Piping and Welding Supervisor

Location: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Reports to: Manager, Asset Integrity

Leading a team comprised of pipefitting, welding, insulation and maintenance technicians, the Piping and Welding Supervisor directs maintenance activities in these disciplines, with consideration for identified budgets and schedules, to ensure the reliability and availability of the clients Medicine Hat plant, while simultaneously minimizing risks to people, equipment and the environment.


. Provide direct leadership to the Piping and Welding Team, ensuring that polices and procedures are followed and best practices are implemented
. Coach, mentor and promote the development of direct reports and proactively address technical and behavioural performance concerns
. Effectively manage the budget and staffing schedule of the Piping and Welding Team, as well as capital projects work assigned to the Asset Integrity department
. Implement the maintenance program within the plant area, supervise shutdowns, turnarounds and manage unplanned breakdowns
. Manage piping and welding maintenance contracts and contractor relationships, ensuring compliance with the contractor management system requirements
. Positively contribute as a member of the Asset Integrity Management Team to ensure the overall success of the department
. Regularly communicate progress and issues associated with the Piping and Welding Team to the Manager, Asset Integrity and other stakeholders as assigned
. Identify continuous improvement opportunities to reduce costs and minimize risks
. Participate in plant emergency situations after hours as required
. Accountably ensure site policies and procedures, including the site's Work Safety Control System (WSCS), are followed and maintained.
. Work collaboratively with the Chief Inspector and inspection team to ensure all Pressure equipment regulations are met.


Experience and Technical Skills/Knowledge
. Journeyperson trade certification in pipefitting or welding, or a post-secondary diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering Technology or other related discipline
. Minimum 5 years progressive experience in the petrochemical industry or other industrial work environment
. Minimum 5 years of experience in a team lead or supervisory role
. Experience with predictive and preventative maintenance programs
. Solid knowledge of pressure equipment regulations
. Wide range of piping and welding trade skills, including the ability to read and understand engineered drawings.
. Project Management experience an asset
. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office and web based applications, as well as Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
. Class 5 Driver's License
. Certification in First Aid, Confined Space, Fall Protection or any other relevant training is an asset

. Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills
. Strong organizational agility, with a demonstrated ability to liaise with a diverse range of individuals, both externally and internally across the organization in an open and approachable manner
. Proven leadership, coaching and staff development capabilities with a solid focus on motivating others, fostering a positive team culture and recognizing team and individual contributions
. Ability to delegate and hold team members to account for their contributions
. Extremely detail-oriented, with strong organization, prioritization, planning and time management skills, including the ability to respond to shifting priorities and effectively deal with ambiguity
. Demonstrated record of delivering identified outcomes while maintaining budgets and schedules
. Sound judgment with exceptional critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and troubleshooting skills
. Independently motivated and action-oriented with the managerial courage to proactively and innovatively respond to issues or conflicts when they arise
. Responsive and motivated by challenges, with a passion for one's own career growth and development
. Strong mechanical aptitude
