INTRODUCTION

SAIT Polytechnic is known world-wide as a leader in applied education and real world training for business and industry.  Located in the beautiful setting of Calgary, Alberta, SAIT’s mission is to equip people to compete successfully in the changing world of work by providing relevant, skill-oriented education which includes working on applied research projects.

 

Applied research is research directed at decreasing scientific uncertainties and developing solutions to industry identified problems, leading to the development or enhancement of products and processes.  SAIT is the number one Applied Research College in Canada for 2013, and the Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) department at SAIT supports applied research and commercialization activities.

 

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Vice President Corporate Development & Applied Research, the Director of ARIS is a management level position that manages and provides leadership for applied research and innovation at SAIT. The Director leads the development of departmental goals and directly participates in institutional strategic initiatives, as they relate to the integration of applied research in SAIT’s applied education based strategic plan.

 

The primary focus of the position is to provide the overall management for the department, including:

  • growing opportunities for student involvement in applied research,
  • overseeing staffing levels,
  • promoting active employee engagement,
  • managing the department budget and providing oversight for specific research area budgets,
  • promoting the department internally and externally, leading to applied research opportunities,
  • leading the development and implementation of a plan to expand SAIT’s applied research into the international market.

The Director manages a team of Research Associates (RA’s) and support staff and will collaborate with all members of SAIT’s Management Council on specific strategic institutional initiatives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate has a minimum post-secondary education of a graduate degree in a science or technology related area.  Minimum of ten years of related experience including leading a team.

 

Additionally, the candidate should have:

Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong financial management experience
  • Understanding of the commercialization process
  • Experience at motivating teams and promoting collaborative efforts
  • Teaching and mentoring experience would be an asset.

 

Successful candidates must provide proof of qualifications. Only education obtained from an accredited institution will be recognized.
