The Opportunity

About Our Client: Our client is a mid-sized international trading company.

Position Scope:

Reporting to the VP, Sales the Manager, Commodity Trading will be accountable for the North American territory. The Manger, Commodity Trading will be responsible for growing margins through excellent judgement/timing and produce an excellent profit. Strong understanding of the market and products and ability to make decisions when buying and selling are vital to this role. This role is responsible for coaching and mentoring of the North American trading team and will be a role model for Junior and Intermediate Traders across the organization and assist when required. 

In addition, this role is responsible for being a credible source for product specifications, price, supply and demand. Buy and sell products on a daily basis. Use acute sense of market timing and judgement to maximize margin in specified product. Follow  transactions through from beginning to end, including price and terms; keeping accurate and organized notes, booking loads properly, scheduling dates, sales confirmations and coordinating with logistics and accounting.

 Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, motivate and develop North American trading team
  • Proactively initiate phone calls and make contacts with suppliers and customers
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients
  • Provide customers and suppliers with professional service
  • Understand market supply/demand and maximize margin         
  • Up-to-date on product quality specifications
  • Operate using current costing in respective market
  • Use judgment to identify & analyze problems and offers solutions
  • Purchase orders / confirmations entered into system timely and accurately
  • Ensure currency is booked for each shipment to hedge price
  • Coordinate with logistics for documentation and scheduling; ensures loads are booked correctly
  • Update logistics when necessary
  • Ensure client is within credit limit and assists in credit approvals upon booking
  • Assist other traders and work as a team
  • Solve customer service & product claims
  • Continually initiate phone calls and make contacts in the North American Market
  • Excellent local and global sourcing knowledge / arbitraging markets
  • Expertise on product specifications
  • Acute sense of market timing and judgment to maximize margin on specified product
  • Create momentum and create product push on the trading floor
  • General office duties as required

 Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of relevant trading experience
  • Top performer with a track record of success and over achievement
  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

 Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strategic thinking; passion about looking for ways to increase profit  
  • Strong leadership and communication skills coupled with interpersonal skills to deal with complex situations in a professional manner
  • Proven experience as a people manager, able to motivate and develop a team
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Organized and able to manage projects and multitask effectively
  • Excellent Customer Service skills
  • Organized and accurate order taking / processing
