The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS) called Distributed Database Operations. The primary role on the team will be as a SQL Server Infrastructure Database Administrator supporting Canadian and US requirements.
The team has members in Canada and India supporting a wide range of distributed applications. All team members must have the ability to provide 7x24 rotational on-call duties, after hour change support and support disaster recovery test weekends. The eligible candidate will be required to carry a cell phone, laptop and guarantee coverage from outside of work when on-call.
Strong understanding of database concepts and principles
Strong understanding of Microsoft SQL Server functions and features
Ability to define database architecture that supports business requirements
Understanding of project management principles
Ability to lead projects that involve others to deliver on database initiatives
Ability to clearly and concisely provide oral and written communication
Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle several tasks efficiently
Ability to define and execute on research and development type projects
Ability to define and execute on proof of concept initiatives
Deliver on assigned SQL Server Infrastructure projects (eg. new software releases, patch upgrades, feature exploitation, security and audit, etc.) with participation throughout the project lifecycle
Database server/instance installs (stand-alone and clustered), service-pack upgrades, hot fixes, client tool installs, (as defined by Infrastructure manager) according to established procedures and controls
Establish and maintain written best practices and operational procedures (build books, checklists etc) and generally provide guidance on SQL Server operation
Ensure the proper setup and validation of backup and restore processes
Support SQL Server versions 2005, 2008 and 2012 including: Database Engine, Integration Services, Reporting Services and Analysis Services
Proactive monitoring of database environment for stability, performance, availability and recoverability
Support project development following documented standards, policies and procedures (Change Management Process)
Participation in a rotational on-call schedule which entails occasional participation in after-hours and weekend incident resolution, support of production implementations, infrastructure activities, and various disaster recovery exercises
Work closely with other team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services
Develop T-SQL stored procedures, functions and Powershell scripts to support internal processes and improve system performance
Contribute ideas for best practice improvements, process improvement, and innovative solutions
Organizing and monitoring personal workload and escalating to manager when issues arise
Administrative intake process support

Demonstrated ability to apply database concepts to business requirements
University level degree in Computer Science or related information technology degree/diploma
SQL Server certification or MVP status and experience with various SQL versions on various Windows O/S's
T-SQL skills that include a thorough understanding of system tables, stored procedures, functions, triggers, etc
Experience with SQL Server installations and patching
SQL Server tuning skills using Profiler, Index Tuning Wizard, Dynamic Management Views and Functions (DMVs), and other third-party tools
Knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio and Business Intelligence Development Studio
Knowledge of SQL Server database resiliency strategies such as replication, mirroring, log shipping, maintenance plans and DR recovery strategies
Knowledge of Microsoft Powershell for scripting
Experience with Sybase Power Designer
Experience with 3rd party support tools (Redgate, Idera, Embacadero)
Some knowledge of data-mapping and logical and physical data modeling
Willingness to share ideas and speak up in large groups
