Area Manager - Maintenance

U. S. Steel Canada has an immediate opening for an Area Manager - Maintenance at its Hamilton Works facility.

Job Summary
Successful candidates will be able to supervise and direct maintenance technicians in a fast-paced, steel manufacturing facility.

Key Responsibilities
• Administration of the U. S. Steel safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the Operating facility.
• Promotes safety by various means (safety contacts, safety tours, incident investigations and follow-up, MSDS and JSA review, equipment condition, etc.) and leads by example.
• Ensures adherence to all environmental control procedures and relevant codes and standards.
• Applies engineering principles and problems solving techniques to evaluate and resolve mechanical conditions to maximize operating efficiencies.
• Use technical knowledge and maintenance history of mechanical equipment to develop and implement preventive maintenance programs. In addition, an advanced system of preventative maintenance must be adhered to as well as all local and federal requirements.
• Responsible for scheduling a unionized hourly workforce and shift managers to organize and implement major outage work, perform daily breakdown repairs, and manage a full system of rebuilds and inventory management for sufficient spares.
• Responsible to review employee and shift manager performance, perform all aspects of a world class safety system and implement a full system of energy control procedures.
• Utilizing management skills to supervise, direct, and coordinate the efforts of a team of managers and experienced technicians, craftsmen and project planners to repair and maintain equipment to keep the operations running at maximum efficiency with minimal interruption.
• Performs and oversees administrative activities such as scheduling and paying employees, completing production reports, conducting safety conversations, and compiling other reporting as required.
• Actively participates in recruitment screening and selection of prospective new hires



Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• College Diploma in Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing, Material Science, Chemistry or Business discipline or a combination of education and experience working in a unionized, manufacturing/industrial environment is preferred. 5-7 years Manufacturing/Maintenance experience.
• Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills
• Exceptional problem solving skills.
• Ability and desire to work in a shop floor environment
• Exceptional computer skills
• An enthusiastic approach and ability to learn quickly and assume responsibility

• Heavy Industrial setting

• Ensures all operating equipment is maintained and personnel are properly scheduled so as to maximize running time/efficiency and minimize operational disruptions.
• Communicates, directs and facilitates the overall operation of the facility. Builds constructive relationships. Ensures accountability, engages employees, promotes teamwork and responsibility to improve employee morale. Requires strong leadership. Ensures consistent productivity and cost.
