Vice President, Communications & Corporate Affairs (10-month Contract)

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Communication for Loblaw Companies Limited, this position is primarily responsible for supporting the management of the Shoppers Drug Mart brand as well maintaining, enhancing and promoting its reputation with key internal and external stakeholders.

The Vice President, Communications & Corporate Affairs position leads a high-performing team of seven with three direct reports within the areas of internal communications, external communications and consumer affairs and plans and implements effective communication programs and initiatives. Key relationships including working hand-in-hand with the government relations, marketing, merchandising, pharmacy and human resources teams within Shoppers Drug Mart as well as coordinating with the Loblaw corporate affairs and communications team.

Key Accountabilities:

Lead and implement an integrated strategic corporate affairs, communications and media relations program that effectively targets key stakeholder audiences, broadening the awareness of Shoppers Drug Mart's programs and priorities and promoting the Company's leadership in the areas of health (pharmacy), beauty and convenience.

Media Relations

* Manage public relations and media relations strategies and programs to support company goals
* Manage relations with media outlets acting as Shoppers Drug Mart's communications liaison and spokesperson
* Lead the response to media inquiries
* Train and prepare spokespeople where/when relevant

* Work with team and agencies to develop and disseminate press materials as necessary
* Work with stakeholders and industry associations to stay abreast of potential issues and provide crisis communications support to senior leaders
* Manage corporate reputation through relationships with consumer and business media
* Oversee media relations measurement including media monitoring for Shoppers Drug Mart

Public Relations

* Develop and oversee public relations strategies and campaigns in support of Shoppers Drug Mart's vision and key business priorities
* Serve as communications and public relations counsel to senior leadership
* Create and execute strategic public relations plans and campaigns in conjunction with internal clients
* Develop plans and programs that outline goals and objectives, key audiences and stakeholders, recommended media, metrics for success and timelines
* Manage relationships with outside PR agencies and campaign budgets
* Support major company product and service launches with results-driven pr campaigns

Brand Reputation and Issues Management

* Execute health thought leadership strategy to increase Shoppers Drug Mart's influence and profile within the healthcare space to demonstrate the positive impact pharmacy can have on the sustainability of our healthcare system
* Seek out opportunities and partnerships to voice SDM's position on healthcare system reform and provide sustainable solutions

* Work with government affairs, pharmacy team and respective industry / professional associations on retail and pharmacy regulatory changes
* Develop company positions, disseminate proactive communication, develop anticipated messaging and respond to media requests

* Act as a resource with regards to corporate social responsibility initiatives such as, environment, health, ethical sourcing, community investment and work with Loblaw on coordinating efforts in this area

Internal Communications

* Evolve internal communication capabilities to motivate, engage and educate employees on company strategy, direction and initiatives
* Work directly with senior leadership to develop and execute messaging that aligns with company value and objectives for various communication vehicles and events including conferences, intranet sites, emails and presentations
* Support communications for synergy efforts and cultural change in regards to Shoppers Drug Mart as an independent operating division of Loblaw Companies Limited?


Post secondary Degree or Diploma in a related Field including Communications or Public Relations

* 15 or more years of corporate communications, public relations, corporate affairs, experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
* Excellent proven, written and oral communication and presentation skills
* Ability to work strategically, tactically and independently
* Proven capability for crisis management and media relations
* Ability to work across all levels of employees and management, as well as with outside agencies
* Ability to work on cross-functional teams, work well under pressure and enjoy a fast-paced, unpredictable environment
* Experience in a retail, pharmacy or consumer-facing organization desired
