Department: Medical Surgical/Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit
Hours: 37.5 Hours/Week; 12 Hour Days/Nights - Every Other Weekend & Statutory Holidays
Status: Permanent Full-Time

Toronto Western Hospital is located in the vibrant heart of the downtown communities of South Annex, College, Queen and King Street West. It is a 239-bed academic health science centre dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, providing a breadth of services from emergency care to sophisticated brain surgery.

With expertise in musculoskeletal health and arthritis, the hospital's programs also include orthopaedics, rheumatology and the hand program as well as a busy Emergency Department that sees more than 50,000 patients yearly.
The 22-bed Medical/Surgical/Neuro Intensive Care Unit is a regional centre for neurosurgical and spinal cord injured patients and provides nurses with a wide variety of professional challenges.
Nurses use a broad range of critical care skills, in a unit where decision-making autonomy is emphasized. A number of resources have been created to support patients and families including a bereavement team. Nurses rotate as the unit resource nurse regularly, which includes responding to Code Blue calls within the hospital. MSICU/NICU has a comprehensive Critical Care Rapid Response Team, where nurses participate in the assessment of patients at risk for ICU admission and follow complex patients post discharge.
The majority of patients have diagnoses of:
- Neurologic disorders
- General internal medical conditions
- Disorders requiring:
- Neurosurgery (head and spine)
- General surgery
- Orthopedic surgery
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification
Completion of a Critical Care Course
- Minimum one (1) to two (2) years recent/current, direct acute care Medical/Surgical Nursing experience
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Exceptional decision making and problem solving ability
- B. Sc. N. preferred
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.) certification preferred
- Current MSICU and NICU experience preferred
- Membership with the RNAO preferred
