Canadian hiring for the spring – Where the jobs will and won’t be created

Canadian employers say that they are planning to hire fewer workers in the coming months. The Manpower Group has just released its Employment Outlook report for the second quarter of 2014. This regular survey of hiring intentions predicts the slowest employment growth in four years.

In this national survey of 1,900 employers, only 16% say that they plan to hire increased staff. The majority, 78% indicate that they plan to maintain their current workforce, and 2% are uncertain of their plans. The remaining 4% of employers said that they plan to cut staff in the coming months.

While this report indicates a slowdown in hiring, the news is better for certain regions and industries than others. Amongst the employers surveyed, those in Construction were expecting the healthiest hiring climate. Manufacturing companies predict the least hiring of the ten industries surveyed.

“A modest hiring climate is projected for the second quarter of 2014, with new business growth at its weakest in five months,” said Byrne Luft, Vice President of Operations for Manpower Canada. “There are some bright spots amidst the slow growth, with employers in the Construction and Transportation & Public Utilities industry sectors expecting the strongest gains. However, job growth is expected to be slower in Ontario and Quebec, with limited advances in full-time work expected for the coming quarter.”

    Stats like this make me wonder what kind of steps are being taken to assist with small business funding and start-up training. I know that there are job-creation initiatives that bring larger businesses to a given area through tax breaks or other incentives, but I’ve rarely heard of similar drives that focus on seeding or supporting small business – even though we’re constantly told that small business forms the backbone of the economy, and is a primary force in job-creation at a local level. I’m not saying that government agencies need to start chucking around grant money, but it could be helpful if attaining funding, such as loans, became streamlined or simplified as part of a job-creation initiative. How about introducing community outreaches that connect potential entrepreneurs with investment funding, like workshops on the ins and outs of crowdfunding? Or offering tax incentives for companies who specialize in marketing and promotion to lend expertise or mentor small business owners in branding? I think it’s high time that issues like employment and job-creation take one small step outside of the box, if only to consider the possibilities technology has opened up in these areas.

    How is it that I am a very experienced M & E Construction Project Manager ( 30 plus years) and nobody in Canada will hire me, even though I have been in touch with the big staffing agencies, oh yes I forgot to mention I live in the UK, so all I can think of it must be down to the visa’s etc.

    So on one side we have “very experienced M & E Construction Project Manager”
    versus a visa situation, the scores are visa’s winning hands down.
    I will work anywhere in Canada or the United States
