Aluma Systems

Primary work location is the Burnaby refinery which has a standard 4 days on 3 days off 10hr shift that goes year long, OT is generally non existent except for critical work and when shutdowns occur. 

Shutdown schedules work as such;
13 days on 1 day off 10+ hour shifts dayshifts and nightshifts
Shutdowns generally occur once a year on a 3/5/10 year schedule (aka not every year has a shutdown generally no more then 2 years will go by without one)
Shutdowns can last any where between 2 weeks and 3 months given what units are being worked on.

Aluma as a company is fine to work for but advancement within its ranks outside of becoming a site foreman here and there are very limited -- BC generally doesn't seem to hire from within for upper level management positions either.

Field Level management can be hit or miss depending on who is running things at the time generally things are fine but you can get some wildcards that can cause issues.

Both the Painter and Scaffolding side have their own unique issues as you will likely find out when you get hired but generally the people you work with are good enough people to hang with for 40 hours a week.

Biggest issue is most people cannot afford long term to work only 40 hour work weeks especially if they don't live close to the site, don't believe any claims of OT outside of shutdown times or even work outside of the plant as that is generally untrue.

Parking situation on the refinery site sucks and you better get used to it if you want to work there long term because its 
1. never going to get better.
2. going to get worse as time goes by.
regardless of your position within the company.

Aluma currently uses a 3rd party app for serving employees with their payroll information its "horrible", but, get used to it cause its not changing.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The life balance, the work hours are good. And the co-workers, there is a good team.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of organization to operate, the weather conditions, the pressure to work in the same way in summer, than when everything is cover of snow or icy, or wet and muddy. The 3% annual rise, when everything else goes up more. That working full t8me, you are always struggling to meet all your payments, to have only 2 vacation weeks, and 2 sick days. Feel that the organization doesn’t care at all about the employees.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
At work label, the team is nice, the things go well, because the workers actually work as a team. The company in the other side, has a system and way of doing things that is more about politics than about efficiency and care for those who go to work everyday to support the company, and make their way of living out of their work.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It depends on the weather, because you work under the elements. But you have a some task assigned to do during your shift, things may change depending on the demands, usually being organized you meet all your goals, you don’t have more pressure than you need. We start with a morning meeting, and we finish tidying un 15 minutes before clock out.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nice people to work with, a reliable employer.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No flexibility regarding work hours or vacation planning. Month end workload is very heavy, remainder of the month very light. Not possible to book a vacation near month end due to lack of coverage. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Favouritism is apparent in the CSR dept. Other departments seem to be happy and treated fairly -  with less judgement.  Corporate culture/philosophy sounds good but the subsequent workflows and approvals create very long delays - blocking continuous workflow - which is very frustrating. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Plan to be on time, or make up your time. In-person only, no option to work from home. Fast paced environment.  Lovely co-workers made the environment very pleasant, and it was fun to be part of the team. Unlimited coffee, tea and occasional snacks also helped to make the day fly quickly.

yard manager doesnt even have a plan and it takes about a hr for people to actually start working because the higher ups are still confused on how to start the day
-what you believe you learned,
I learned that you should know your worth, I worked countless amount of overtime for these guys and really tried my best to help. once they get the chance to get rid of you they will. doesnt matter how much you contributed to their company.

unorganized and unprofessional

stressful, some people just show up to do nothing, demotivates you. 
-the hardest part of the job,
showing up to work knowing how stressful its going to be. management peer pressuring you into doing overtime when its 5 mins till your shift ends, if you say no to overtime they try make you feel guilty.

started days around 7 am after our daily tool boxes and regular daily stretches. Great working atmosphere with this company and wondering employees to work with. They made sure all training was up to date and it was like a real family atmosphere they went out of there when it was needed. they made the job worth while on a daily basis to want to come to and there was never a push to get things done they new they could rely on us t get the jobs done. made a lot of great friends with this company both as workers and management.

Show up at work and start with toolbox meeting.
Once on site I would get a crew together and assess the hazards for the scope of work to be completed for the day.
My coworkers and I developed good working relationships understanding the importance of communication.
The hardest part of the job is planning and mobilizing the gear to the job site accurately for the day.
I enjoy the positive relationships that I did have with my coworkers.

Safety brief before each day starts, after that you start preparing the tools needed for the day at work and then continue on with the project at hand. I learned new techniques to use while painting that differed from the ones I had been taught in residential painting. Hardest part of the job was keeping up to pace with the other coworkers who had been at it longer than I had. The most enjoyable part were the people I worked with although they can get on the nerves from time to time, as can any employer.

As a subsidiary of Brand energy, aluma systems does not do it's superior any favours. Treat employees like a number and do not care for their happiness or well being. Their project management team at Kearl is disgraceful and swift action needs to be taken before the proverbial ship sinks. Job security level extremely poor as they lay off/hire every other week.
