I loved working there, feeling I made a positive difference in clients' quality of life. It was very challenging but rewarding. About 12 months ago Baycrest took a strong revenue-making direction, in which many of the employees working directly with clients were laid off, and programs that were therapeutic in essence were left merely instructional. Clients will lose their personal connection with staff and sense of community. 
Increasing workload beyond job description, requests for more hours denied.

Assisting the manager with setting up activities for the seniors. As a result, I learned how to interact with difficult seniors, the importance of knowledge in your domain, and the ability to adapt quickly.  Management was very nice as they allowed us to decide what we felt was best suited to our abilities and aided us when we were in difficult situations. As well,  Everyone was very nice to one another, easing the pressure off of meeting new people. The hardest part was dealing with difficult elders who would complain or who were going through tough times. Yet, that was the most enjoyable part as I got to meet new people and interact with elders, and people my age.

The history, mission and vision of the organization is exemplary. However, the senior management is under-qualified and is unable to properly lead.

Often the treatment of staff is borderline abusive and the lack of growth opportunities, work-life balance and diversity is staggering. 

The salary and benefits are the main reason staff stay on, though even that is becoming less of a draw due to the poor treatment and management within the workplace.

FYI I worked on the research side. This job gave me a deep understanding on clinical research - I learned that it can be slow, it's difficult to collaborate with physicians because research isn't their priority, and management tends to overwork their employees because they're far apart from the projects. It's also extremely difficult to move up in research (3 years to be promoted) and compensation is very low. Unless you have a strong interest in geriatric research, I suggest working at the main hospitals downtown Toronto.

This is a geriatric hospital, dealing with patients who don't understand the treatment can be stressfull

Culture in our department is cooperative and our team is truly a team

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I am a medical admin assistant, my day is spent leasing with patients

For people interested in geriatrics, Baycrest has virtually every kind of program and opportunity available.  There are many dedicated and talented people who work there and new employees can certainly capitalize on these things.  Compensation is average compared to other hospitals.  Unfortunately, positive features are overshadowed by an almost constant air of uncertainty about job security and a general lack of faith in leadership.

It is so nice at Baycrest and gives their patient the best of the best care. I learned so much, like providing total care to my patient which include bed care, oral care, wound care, taking vital signs, documentation,  head to toe assessment,  team working, and having a mutual and a good relationship with the patient.  The hardest part of the job is not known to me while the most interesting part of the job is when you get to know your patient.

Progressive Healthcare and supportive team (from Admin to front line).  

Patient care experience is paramount.  Frontline line staff, professional staff, volunteers and management all work together and value each other's opinions.  Work environment is positive and work life balance is valued.

I currently dedicate 2 hours a week as a volunteer in two events; Bingo Night, an events where I can interact with residents and engage them in conversation. Bingo Night provides me with the opportunity to converse with many of the residents that are still very active.


Most rewarding part of my job is getting to know the people on a daily basis.
Not being able to communicate due to language barrier
