This job is absolutely not what it appears to be in the job posting. BrokerLink presents the role as a “Personal Lines Advisor,” implying it’s some kind of professional, client-focused advisory position with room to grow. In reality, it’s a high-stress call centre job that burns people out and then gaslights them for not being able to keep up.

You’re thrown into an endless queue of back-to-back calls with little to no breathing room. Everything is tracked — how long you’re on a call, how long you’re not, even how long you go to the washroom. And yes, you’ll be afraid to use the washroom because it will be used against your stats. You're treated more like a cog in a machine than a human being.

Micromanagement is relentless. Team leads watch and nitpick every second of your day. Performance targets are constantly changed without warning, and then management gaslights you by saying the targets “have always been that way.” You’re expected to maintain impossible service levels while juggling unrealistic workloads and being criticized for every minor slip.

What makes it worse is the toxic management culture. Managers openly gossip about employees in the office — we hear everything they say. Whether it’s someone’s performance, personality, or personal life, they talk about it like it's office entertainment. It’s unprofessional, petty, and creates an atmosphere of fear and distrust.

Upper management refuses to acknowledge the real issue behind the long client wait times: we are massively understaffed. Every advisor is responsible for roughly 3,500 clients, and yet somehow we’re expected to give “exceptional service.” Turnover is high, people are constantly quitting, and instead of investing in retaining staff, BrokerLink just keeps buying more brokerages and adding to the pile.

They love to blast their “core values” in every email and meeting—things like inclusion, respect, integrity, and putting people first—but they don’t follow a single one of them. These values are purely performative. Employees are treated with disregard, silenced when they speak up, and blamed for the systemic failures of leadership.

And don’t think you can escape to another role internally either. Everyone in the service inbound department is desperately trying to get out because of how brutal it is. That means 30–50 people are applying for the same internal posting—and even when a role opens up, it’s often just a lateral move with no raise. Internal mobility is a joke. Roles are handed out based on favouritism, not merit. It doesn’t matter how qualified or experienced you are—if you’re not one of the manager’s favourites, you won’t get chosen.

To be fair, the only good part of this job was the training. It was organized, thorough, and the trainers themselves were great. But the moment you finish training and start taking calls, reality hits hard and fast. The work is punishing, the culture is toxic, and you’re left wondering how a company that claims to care about its people can be so consistently hostile and dehumanizing.

If you value your mental health, don’t work here. This job will wear you down, make you question your abilities, and leave you exhausted. There are better workplaces out there—don’t let the fake professionalism in the job posting fool you.

A typical day at work:
A typical day at BrokerLink begins with a battle — not with customers, but with technology. You arrive early hoping to get settled before the phones start ringing, only to find yourself wrestling with systems that feel like relics of a bygone era. The telephony system may or may not connect you properly, and if it does, you count yourself lucky. It was “upgraded” months ago, but somehow manages to perform worse than the one it replaced. Ten months later, leadership is adding more features — not fixing the foundation. That sets the tone for the day.

Once you’re in, you’ll navigate a maze of internal platforms and external systems, all of them stitched together like a patchwork quilt of outdated software. Each one has its own quirks, login process, and frequent crashes. Efficiency feels like a distant dream.

What I learned:
If nothing else, you’ll learn patience — or maybe resignation. You’ll learn how to troubleshoot things that shouldn’t need troubleshooting, how to decipher unclear processes that change quarterly, and how to survive without clear direction. You’ll learn that “adaptability” at BrokerLink doesn’t mean growth or innovation; it means enduring broken systems, half-updated procedures, and the revolving door of frustrated employees.

Management:
Management is well-meaning in words, but disconnected in action. They will talk down to you in front of your co-workers. Decisions feel reactive rather than strategic, and frontline feedback rarely seems to reach anyone who can make a difference. The communication loop is broken — messages from the top are full of optimism, but the reality on the floor feels like triage. There’s a sense that leadership measures success by how well problems are ignored rather than solved.

Workplace culture:
The culture can best be described as corporate endurance. “Whip harder, work harder” could be the unofficial motto. Collaboration happens mostly in the form of collective venting. Burnout is common, but not acknowledged. Those who raise concerns are often told to “trust the process” — the same process that keeps changing or failing. Innovation isn’t part of the culture; survival is.  

The hardest part of the job:
The hardest part, is the constant friction. Every tool, process, and communication feels like it adds one more cut. You want to do good work for your clients, but you’re constantly slowed down by inefficiency and confusion. Even when you manage to close a sale, it’s hard to feel satisfaction knowing the next client interaction could be another technological or procedural nightmare.

The most enjoyable part of the job:
The best moments come from your coworkers — the few who still care enough to help, share a laugh, or find humour in the chaos. There are pockets of great people trying to make the best of a broken environment. Unfortunately, they’re swimming upstream.

My experience working as a Marketing and Communications Coordinator at BrokerLink was a nightmare. I was very eager to succeed and did everything I could to produce the best work possible and to excel. However, I wasn't given adequate support from my management team.

A typical day at work involved handling internal communications, such as writing leadership messages, employee updates, and posting and managing content for the employee intranet. I also was heavily involved with external communications pieces, such as writing a weekly blog article for the company's website, creating social media content and actively monitoring social media activity, designing advertising materials, and overseeing the quarterly customer newsletter.

I enjoyed the process of creating blog and newsletter articles, which discussed insurance-related topics in ways that were digestible and engaging to audiences. My least favourite aspects of the job involved handling the managing of internal communications documents, as there was often a lot of confusion from various departments regarding updating of documents, etc. as well as technology issues with our intranet.

What could have been an enjoyable job for me was tarnished by the Assistant Manager, Communications, who did not have a strong work ethic and who let her personal issues distract her from her day to day work. As her direct report, I ended up taking on the majority of the work allocated to the Communications department and rarely received recognition for my dedication. There were many times when I had to stay very late at the office in order to ensure all our projects stayed on track with our timelines.

I had very little communication with our Director of Marketing and Communications. Any communications regarding my performance occurred directly between my Assistant Manager, Communications and our Director of Marketing and Communications. I, along with the rest of our team were regularly kept out of the loop about ongoing activities that directly impacted us.

The workplace culture among the Marketing and Communications team at BrokerLink is very dark, depressing and stressful. The managers constantly seem overwhelmed by stress and this has a very negative impact on their employees. Additionally, they are usually too self-involved to recognize improvements and achievements among their staff, and to really think through new processes before rolling them out.

Alot of "that's not my job" and passing off work. Management pushes the use of tracking systems then teaches you how to fudge the systems to make their numbers look better. Good bonuses for management but it stops there. So many talented brokers giving up the industry due to poor or lack of management. They should focus on quality calls, nit how fast u can get thru a call and how many calls u take a day rushing u to the pount where u stop asking the appropriate questions, stop gateribg all the infor and stoo explaining to the customer the next steps or rhe consequenses of the changes they are making, quality information being passed to customers and care more about items, properties and  vehicles being under insured by non educated people who have been pushed thru the licensing with only book knowledge and not actual real life insurance. And please tell me why its OK for intact to own Brokerlink and for brokerlink to provide their staff with gift cards and competitions to see who can place the most business with Intact. I'm sorry but Intact is not the right/best market for  every policy. But 9 times outta 10 policies are pushed thru the Intact portal by brokers chosing laziness and a timmies/amazon card over doing whats right for their client. Entire Books of business being automatically rolled over to Intact despite having far less coverage upon renewal with nothing more than a stale generic letter to the customer saying "OH hey, we no longer write business with your current property insurer so we've taken all ur info and given it to Intact. We will be charging u more money for less coverage and there are even some coverages u used to have that u no longer have at all. Best hope u don't have a sewer back up cause now u only have 25K of coverage on ur 700K home. Oh and P.S, we took ur banking info and provided that to Intact as well even tho u never signed anything saying we could do that and now Intact will deduct from ur account.  And this letter will be signed by ur local broker who probably hasn't touched ur file in a year but brokerlink will sign their name to that letter just to make u more comfortable. So please be kind to ur brokers if u get a letter like this. Most don't even realize it's happened and they are most likely drowning in so much work that they cry everyday.

Boo Brokerlink, give ur head a shake and start treating ur staff right and especially ur customers, after all, without them the acquisitions stop.

One of the most poorly run companies I've worked for. They're constantly having meetings, surveys, etc. for feedback, and the same issues get brought up. Despite this, the upper management just explains why you're wrong, with little regard for why their staff, or even customers are so unhappy. Most of their growth is from acquisitions, so staff and brokers alike see a stark contrast between a service and culture before and after, but the company does what it can to gaslight both parties into believing that they "just don't understand the new system"

They claim to not micromanage, but they expect your work to fit into their scorecard by the letter, even though it's impossible to achieve this, and they're really dishonest about this being the case. They'll tell you not to worry about the calls taken, but than complain that too many caller are waiting, that you're off the queue too much etc., but when your unfinished workload becomes too large, they circle back to "finish the workload first, we don't track number of calls". 

Essentially, they expect the work of someone trained and experienced in the field, but expect the efficiency of a call center employee. As a result, everyone feels overworked, that their model isn't working, and that everyone is just passing around workflow between each department, because you're punished for taking the time to meet customers needs, instead of just chasing letter grades on an arbitrary score sheet. 

My experience with BrokerLink changed significantly over time. During my tenure, my workload nearly tripled while compensation and support did not reflect the increased responsibilities. Overtime became a regular expectation, and the overall environment often felt underappreciative, toxic and reactive rather than supportive.

I support internal promotion and growth opportunities; however, in my experience, some management roles appeared to lack sufficient training and operational experience and knowledge, which contributed to communication breakdowns, inconsistent direction, and severe inefficiencies within the department.

My department fell under Finance, lacked structured onboarding and consistent operational processes. Concerns raised through leadership and HR channels did not lead to meaningful support or resolution.

There were also organizational and vendor-management practices that raised ethical concerns for me and contributed to a loss of confidence in leadership oversight and accountability.

For anyone considering employment with BrokerLink or considering selling their business to the organization, I would encourage careful consideration of the operational culture and support structure within certain departments.

I was happy in the role at first, but the negatives started popping up, and eventually the negatives far outweighed the positives. It is true that, though management will never state it, the place does operate as a call centre and production line. And through the phones and the employees’ status on them, everyone is closely monitored. It is uncomfortable to feel so closely watched. The management also doesn’t seem to be well trained in managing, and there is sense that they are forever trying to get a handle on what upper management actually wants from them, which all ends up feeling unprofessional. There is also an enormous emphasis on the numbers, and how quickly one can process, and there doesn’t seem to be any tracking done on accuracy or qualitative feedback from clients. I did overhear a manger speak with another manager, and it sounded like they were referring to the employees as production line factory workers, based on the estimated amount of time expected for each renewal. There was also a suggestion made that hiring younger people is better because they are more driven. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Managers give you endless support, the people in the office are all beautiful souls and it makes the work environment unmatched. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is stress at all brokerages, being an insurance broker is a fast paced job, if you know how to manage stress and follow through with your job start to finish, there is no stress 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My experience is that, this company is ever changing, for the good. They are always evolving their work flows to be as seamless as possible so clients are never waiting for a broker to get back to them. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My role as a service advisor includes answering calls  from clients and helping them with their insurance policies, sales when they come, pushing certain insurance products that will help them reduce premium, and education your clients so they understand what they’re buying. 
You have endless resources at your fingertips tips, if you don’t have the answer, your supportive program leaders are dedicated to getting you that answer, if the answer is not simple to find.

This organization operates with a typical call center mindset, characterized by overly ambitious targets. The turnover rate is notably high, leading to rapid hiring and firing cycles. Due to this frequent turnover, they often seem to hire individuals quite readily, prioritizing quick replacements over long-term retention or skill match.

If you fall short of the company's set targets, be prepared to be micromanaged and the quickly put on a performance improvement plan. You are just a number in a replaceable role, given the constantly shifting and sometimes unrealistic expectations set for you.  

While the company claims to have an unlimited sick day policy, in practice, taking sick leave often results in warning letters and eventual termination. This discrepancy has led to heightened stress levels among employees, with many resorting to short-term leaves. 

While management may initially appear supportive, any decline in your performance can quickly change their stance, leading to unexpected performance reviews.

Brokerlink does not care about the time and effort you put in to customer relations. Even when you spend weeks fixing another employees screw up. The only thing that matters is staying in the Que ready to take in bound calls and making sales. The more experienced brokers have only been here a year since they get the experience and find somewhere better to work. They are constantly mass hiring and not taking the time to teach new employees proper workflows (not that it matters since they seem to change those every month). Even when you’re a hardworking employee willing to help the newer ones, you get a slap on the wrist for not constantly being ready to take more calls. It has gotten so bad that employees would rather see their number improve which results in terrible service. Managers will do everything they can to push a heavier workload on you than actually help you succeed. Get your foot in the door AND LEAVE. Upper management does not know how to communicate with eachother hence the stressful workload.
