My experience working at Canna Cabana was extremely disappointing due to ongoing issues with management, communication, and workplace culture.

I was frequently scheduled outside of my agreed availability, despite clearly communicating my limits. Scheduling often felt inconsistent and appeared to revolve around management’s personal relationships rather than fairness or operational needs.

Communication from management was highly unprofessional and disorganized. Important information was often shared through confusing Discord chat channels rather than clear, structured communication. At times, responses from management appeared to be copied from AI tools rather than written directly, and there were instances where they admitted they had not properly reviewed what they were sending. This created confusion and made it difficult for staff to feel informed or supported.

There were also situations where concerns about employee well-being were dismissed, and communication could come across as aggressive or inappropriate. Statements implying employees were replaceable or needed to “know their place” contributed to a toxic work environment.

Operationally, there were consistent issues with order accuracy and gaps in product knowledge from management, which impacted both staff and customer experience.

There were also concerns around how customer feedback was handled, including pressure to offset negative reviews rather than properly addressing them.

Sales expectations—particularly around membership programs—were extremely aggressive and at times felt excessive for both employees and customers.

Overall, this was one of the most stressful and disorganized workplaces I have experienced. Significant improvements are needed in leadership accountability, communication structure, and respect for employees.

I can’t speak for every location, but if you do decide to work with this company avoid this location, just google and read the comments.

This place has no words. Imagine mean girls on steroids and less brain cells. I have never been around so many incompetent people. Even management is beyond dumb. Policies change every 5 seconds. Management blames others for their own stupidity. A total joke of a company it’s astounding so many keep opening. The most unprofessional place I’ve ever worked for in all my years. Emotionally driven no logic to anything. I’ve never experienced such a toxic and illogical workplace. It’s like being around the mean 7th graders with some type of power. I’ve worked for and managed with over 100s of people through our my life but like I said this place is indescribable. I actually laugh thinking back to this place and the people and a lot of employees say similar things since I’ve gone to other locations to get my specific buds. Seems like each location has their own stories but similar basis. Crazy. 

Anyway. Risk wasting your time you might stay depending on the competency of your manager and if they can’t blame you for their own stupidity or they personally like you. 

No set policies and procedures in place like every respectable professional business. Total chaos. Terrible training. No actual training. Throws you in. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I sincerely enjoy the support from my direct supervisor. The people are everything in this business, and my boss makes my work life enjoyable. The work-life-balance is excellent, and the company is always open to feedback on how to improve. Sometimes it is not implemented with urgency but it is always heard. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The pace of growth here can be stressful, especially with new compliance policies  related to cannabis constantly changing (out of the company's control). It can be frustrating when not every department shows the same level of passion as the retail teams, but these are regular growing pains of any corporation. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company culture can be cut throat when it comes to KPI results, but extremely supportive of their people. The work-life-balance is solid and my supervisor is very respectful of my boundaries. I feel my bosses care about me at work and outside of work. I have received the training and support I need to excel in the company and make my stores the best they can be. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Regional Area Management can expect a heavy travel schedule with longer routes on two or three days of the week depending on territory. Administrative work can be heavy and email forward at times. There is opportunities to do the basics like selling and coaching and having fun on the salesfloor while chatting with team members to develop the leadership on the side.

The company is a prime case study of "reactive" over "proactive". Most stores are short-staffed, leaving many workers completely ALONE even at late-night locations. 

Your life outside of work is of no consideration to management. Whether that be harassing you with phone calls on your days off, or expecting you to open the store up on your days off. Short-staffed? You can work 4 more hours alone, right? :) 

VERY LOW MORALE. Very high turnover and store managers are expected to "help" other locations, sometimes even just managing completely different stores that they did NOT sign up for. I've seen them move managers from their living area, to manage faraway locations just to fill in their store with a new hire.

Security concerns were the pushing point for many of my co-workers. Cannabis stores all over the city are being targeted for robberies and after our store got hit, we expected some changes. After several meetings with upper management; no changes were made and none of us felt even remotely valued anymore. None of us felt safe.

It was an okay place to learn about recreational cannabis BUT I could not honestly recommend working for a company like this. One that pays you so little, and DOES NOT care about staff well-being/safety AT ALL!

I started with Canna Cabana in November 2023 as a Shift Leader at the Sage Hill location. Starting with the company was a positive experience for me, and I felt welcomed by the team right away.

A couple weeks later, I transferred to the Westbrook location where I was able to work more hours and continue learning the role. During that time, I gained a lot of experience with customer service, cannabis education, inventory processes, and daily store operations. Working closely with leadership there helped me build confidence in both sales and operations.

After about a month and a half at Westbrook, I was promoted to Assistant Store Manager. In that role, I helped support the team, assist with daily operations, and continue developing my leadership skills.

Several months later, I applied for the Retail Field Trainer position for Alberta and was successful in obtaining the role after completing the interview process. The opportunity allowed me to continue growing professionally and work with different teams across the province.

As of June 2026, I will have been in the Retail Field Trainer role for two years, and in November 2026 I will celebrate three years with the company overall.

My experience with High Tide Inc. and Canna Cabana has provided me with opportunities for growth, development, and career progression. I have enjoyed being able to learn new skills, work with different teams, and continue building my experience within the company.

I worked here for 3+ years; I was one of the "OG" staff, back when it was still Newleaf. I have held every store-level position. Things actually started out promising, but it went downhill quickly when High Tide took over. 

Communication is abysmal. Some things will be forgotten about entirely, and others will be thrust upon you with little/no notice. This was especially true for weekly price changes; we could see anywhere between 15-250 price changes in one week, which would often be communicated to us with less than 12 hours' notice. 

Across the board, at least at store level, the pay is too low for a position that requires so much training and provincial certification. When I asked for a raise to compete with the average Store Manager salary, I was literally laughed at. They also don't "do" cash bonuses; our 2021 Christmas bonus was a Tim's gift card and some chocolate, right after the CEO sent a mass email bragging about our record sales. 

The staff discount is worse than the discount the customers get. Well, sometimes. Prices change so often that your discount might be better than Cabana Club one week but much worse the next. 

Google reviews are an obsession. Area managers encourage you to leave fake Google reviews on store pages to boost star ratings, and reprimand you when you don't. 

I had an amazing team that I adored. They worked so hard and treated each other so well. It broke my heart to leave them behind, but it wasn't worth it anymore.

Honestly, there isn’t anything that stands out as the “best” part of working here. The overall experience lacks support, growth, and appreciation, making it difficult to find any genuinely positive aspect of the job.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working at Canna Cabana was a disappointing experience. The company overcomplicates simple processes and shows little respect or appreciation for employees’ work. There is virtually no real growth — promotions often go to people from other provinces who don’t even understand the store or sales process, just because they’ve been with the company longer.
It’s frustrating when experienced staff are asked to train new managers or assistant managers but are never considered for promotion themselves. Management doesn’t recognize actual potential or effort.
There’s also a clear lack of care for employees — no benefits, no paid vacation, no sick hours, and basic pay. On top of that, getting enough hours feels like a struggle, as if you have to constantly ask or “beg” for shifts.
Overall, it’s not a supportive workplace, and employees are not valued.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment feels disorganized and often stressful. There is a lack of clear communication, support, and respect for employees. The culture does not prioritize growth or appreciation, and overall it feels like employees are undervalued and overlooked.

Management regularly promotes the company as a highly supportive and positive workplace, but my experience was very different. Staff turnover was extremely high, hours were inconsistent, and expectations often exceeded what would reasonably be expected for the level of compensation being offered.

Employees were expected to maintain near full-time availability despite frequently receiving minimal scheduled hours. It was also common to be asked to cover shortages at other locations due to ongoing staffing issues.

Training and operational support were inconsistent. Employees were often expected to independently learn complex product, compliance, and sales expectations with limited guidance. The company culture frequently treated the role as a high-performance commissioned sales environment, despite compensation and staffing practices reflecting standard retail employment.

I also experienced significant frustration with management accountability and communication. Operational mistakes and inconsistencies were often redirected onto frontline staff rather than addressed constructively. This created an environment that felt stressful, reactive, and unsupportive.

While there are good coworkers at the store level, I would strongly encourage applicants to carefully consider whether the expectations, compensation, and management culture align with what they are looking for long term.

I was a seasoned member of the Cannabis Community & essentially overqualified for the position I took with Canna Cabana, but I took it based on the premise of advancement presented by the DM/SM and for the corporatized-cannabis insight I was hoping to gain. I gained plenty of insight, it was just regarding what should *never* happen in a workplace. 

Canna Cabana’s Store Managers lack the training or professional awareness to properly direct & support their team; so employees have no respect for Management. Often times, there was never any accountability being taken in the workplace nor any employees being held to the workplace standards; just constant blame transference. This is exhausting for workers who truly care about their job and do it well.

The lack of professionalism, actual action, or support from upper management and HR as well was astonishing to me. I had to involve the Ministry (after I had already put my resignation notice in) for HR to properly investigate/do their job when I had a traumatic situation unfold at work. 

Canna Cabana is definitely unlike any workplace I’ve been in but for the wrong reasons. It is hands-down the worst company I have ever represented and if I could give negative stars for this rating I would. I completely left the cannabis industry as a whole after the burnout this company caused me.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part was getting paid for selling elite memberships which pay for themselves and are an easy sell. Coworkers were also good to work with when they would show up.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
 Always issues with aggresive customers including staff being assulted. They expect inventory counts everyday while the product is being sold, it is practically impossible. Point of sale systems crash on a regular basis and IT support barely exists. Part time staff constantly not showing up leaving dedicated staff to deal with everything wiith little support. Some customers are  great others are ignorant, violent or racist. Recieving product is not streamlined or easy and there is no dedicated reciever.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture they strive for is great but it falls short due to high turnover and disorganized work environment. Pay is minimal and raises were unheard of.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Show up find out what needs to be done, usually doable if staff shows up but you will be juggling customers and tasks all day. It is not sustainable long term especially if you work with low effort staff. How good your Store Manager is makes all the difference.
