Carbon Engineering

Can be a great or a terrible place to work depending on what you are expecting as a job. A lot of frustration due to staff coming from established industries/technologies and expecting the same level of standardization. The reality is the process is constantly changing to further develop the tech, but that’s what the purpose of their facility is. One shift may be calm with nothing to do watching TV, the other may be chaos. Management needs to be more clear on what the job description is when bringing people on so that isn’t a surprise and cause frustration for new staff. The pay isn’t amazing, but that is also as most compare it to oil and gas facilities that have  a steady revenue stream. There are yearly salary reviews and equity granted based on performance. The people who are there are fantastic to work with but do leave due to better opportunities (Higher pay). That said you make the most of your time there and you can gain a lot of experience in fields you wouldn’t otherwise see. Staff get poached regularly due to growing demand for this type of experience . Rare for CE to fire people, but when they do you can see their salty indeed reviews trying claim the tech doesn’t work.

Poor management. Trying to build an innovative new plant with many people in management and engineering that have very little plant experience. Rhetoric from management, public relations and website was terribly different from reality on the ground/in the plant. They'd always be talking about be a 'clean' plant with 'innovative' tech. The reality is that it's a chemical plant. Chemical plants are dirty and make a lot of garbage like any other plant of this size. Anyways, it was always hard to hear about how innovative our tech was but then have to move chemicals via shovel, bucket and manlift. Made it difficult to take the place seriously. 

Most days were labour intensive. Building and maintaining components of the new pilot plant.

As an intern, I felt that the management team was very supportive.

The whole Carbon Engineering team was a tightly knit group that often met outside of work for activities (e.g. mountain biking) and a pint every now and again.

The hardest part of the job was the tight deadlines, but everyone was supportive of each other which reduced any stress that would occur throughout the team.

I would have to say that the most enjoyable part of my job here was working with the people I got to work with. Great team!

Carbon Engineering is a really hard place to consider as a sustainable place to grow your career due to the very low salary, constant chaos in the company, and culture. They routinely pay people way below industry standards yet deny that they do. They give the smallest raises, if they do at all. The culture is very difficult with poor communication. Career advancement is tricky there and they kind of operate under the assumption that it's such a cool, innovative company that people won't leave (but they do, in droves). Squamish is a super expensive place to live and CE just doesn't pay us enough to survive there.

Mostly nice coworkers and easy to make friends 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of direction and little incentive for making improvements 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Messy and disorganized. Lack of initiative to make anything better for the employees 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Find something to do and work at a self led project.

Not the worst job you could have. 
Do not pay high enough for squamish living expenses. 
Need capable people in their roles. Pay is sporadic and doesn't seem to be based on experience, merit, time at the company or even position. (People making more than their boss) 

Do not work here, this company lacks basics. Technology is not true.incompetent managerd will ask  engineer to accept their wrong design, no freedom of speech, they do not accept feedback or any request for improvements

Inexperience and systemic management issues  create lack of consistency in all departments. Safety culture lacking because of incompetency.
Wages below industry standard deters qualified individuals from pursuing a career.

Pros:
Great Work-Life Balance
Great People to work with
Very interesting work

Cons:
Pay is slightly below industry standards.
Location is a little far from a major city (75 km to Van).

Great place to work at. I worked there as a co-op student and I learned a lot. Staff is great especially their HR. They’re easy going and understand that everybody has life outside the workplace.
