If you are thinking of working here be ready to come to work and be short. Management hold no accountability for taken on the workload that they failed to have properly covered and they do not help with even the simplest of things like feeding, porttering residents to the dining room, helping the RPN with med pass, etc. Some of the unit coordinators  do not have any medical or nursing background and have difficulty answering PSW or Nursing related questions. But are okay with enforcing rules on PSWs related to resident care with no knowledge. They threaten to remove staff off their schedule if you do not comply with completing all monthly safety24/7 modules within one month even though by contract you are actually allowed to  complete the ones that are due that month. some Unit coordinators also do not show up on time for work or for some reason allowed to take so much time off when everyone else get denied time because their position can't be filled. If you work nights do not expect to see the unit coordinators as they typically fail to communicate with night staff and address issues. 

People gossip in this place, I highly recommend showing up for work and keeping your personal business to yourself. Be very careful what you say as others will use it against you. be prepared for a group of staff to gang up on you and make accusations to get you fired or make you want quit. They will doing anything in their power to make you miserable. 

Do Not feel bad if you don't get the routine with the amount of training they give you. Their form of training is garbage and you will not get all the information you need when you start. you will learn as you go. If you complain about something do not expect change because this place is notorious for not implementing change until someone gets hurt. DO stand up for yourself, if you feel you are being over worked or the work is unsafe. If they do not listen, your best bet is to threaten them with calling the LTC ministry of health and the ministry of labor. The management their is trash they have no idea what your job entails but they think they do but they don't. They are very out of touch with their employees. They lack the ability to manage and demonstrate leadership skills as they like to hide in their offices. The management are very click orientated.  
write down everything date and time, If someone says something nasty to you and tell the RN. Do not attempt to get into confrontation with those you work with even if you think they are in the wrong. Walk away and find a supervisor to mediate the situation that way you have a witness. If you get brought into the office because someone complained about you or you're getting in trouble for something ALWAYS HAVE UNION REPRESENTION, never go in alone. These managers do not care and will say things that are very inappropriate and against the union contract and rules that are set up by the ministry of labor. You cannot trust anyone there, you might make some work friends but always be careful. These people are only there for the money remember that. They do not care for you. Be prepared to feel like you are not giving the standard of care to the residents because cassellholme is cutting costs left, right and center. Products and toiletries are absolute garbage and I would never even use this stuff on myself or even animals. Do try and make the time you are there positive for the residents as they are the ones who are getting the shortest end of the stick due to what I've stated above. spend quality time with them and go the extra mile for them. At the end of the day they are truly why we do our jobs and have the passion for caring for those in need. 

All the best! I hope this helps, I know this place is the LTC that gives the best pay in North Bay but it isn't the best place to work. I would keep that in mind.

I worked at Cassellholme for a little over three years. Though I was there for only a short time I noted a notable decline in the quality and enviroment for it's workers and residents. Even those with 20+ years noted the decline in things such as time to provide care, food quality and safety of it's residents.

I have many years of experience in the field and some of the things that occured there were shocking. The thing that was the final blow for me was hiring managers that had absolutely no sense being there. They made busy work for themselves and were allergic to being available along with zero idea of what it's like to work in this kind of enviroment but telling you what to do. (And many times putting residents and staff in danger as a result.)

Worse is that some of the management could be vengful targetting staff that would bring up these sorts of concerns.

It's telling that in my three years with the company they have only manages to keep a single RN from the start to finish of my time with them. RPNs is a very similar situation with less than five remaining there for my entire stay.

DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY unless you absolutely need to. They do pay well but it's because they cannot keep or attract staff otherwise. 

If you do work for them record every conversation you have with management and always request the union be there with you. (The union isn't particularly strong or effective as an aside but at least they usually try).

Some of the staff, especially the staff that have been there a long time however are angels and doing god's work. I don't think management and upper management knows just how much they do to keep that hole working and it's residents safe.

As a final issue I have, various departments have no idea what each other are doing. The hiring team WILL LIE TO YOU and guarentee certain things like potentially mondays off, or a day only shifts. Be asbolutely sure you get this in writing when you are going to sign on the dotted line. Also DO NOT DO your Safety 24-7 or similar online work without getting them to promise to pay you for 8+ hours. It's incredibly lengthy and is considered training by the goverment and as such is required to be paid! They failed to do so multiple times when I asked newly hired staff.

A typical day is very busy. I am mainly a med nurse - handing out medications for the majority of my day. I have scheduled dressing changes on various days and have various assessments to conduct on a regular basis. 

A great part of my job experience and learning opportunity has been the time management aspect. With about 36 residents to see in a timely manner multiple times per day, it is easy to fall behind. This job has allowed me to become efficient in handing out medications properly, fitting in my dressing changes as the day goes on and dealing with new challenges as they develop. 

I work with 1 RN and an RPN during the day and on a night shift I am the only RPN on my floor. The day staff also consists of 7 (or fewer) PSWs. We work short often, which makes time management even more crucial.

The hardest part of the job is keeping on top of the multitude of medications that must be administered in a timely manner and fitting in the various dressing changes or finding time to finish the documentation when a fall or new skin tear occurs. I sometimes find myself staying up to half an hour after work to finish the documentation in these situations.

The most enjoyable part of my job is the fast pace environment. I love how fast my day goes by and how nice it is to see the difference a positive attitude can make in these people's world. The families often make comments about how i must really like my job, and every time it makes me realize how much more I enjoy it as I am developing as a nurse.

Working at Cassellholme was a pleasure until about 2016. It was always fast-paced and demanding, however over the years it became a job of unrealistic expectations. You have 12hrs of work to do in an 8hr period, and its disgusting and saddening because the residents end up suffering. 

Besides the workload, the management team have zero interest in tackling workplace bullying and harassment. As long as you show up and fake a smile, you will never be repremanded for a complete lack of work ethic or ability. If you work hard and make any complaints about bullying or harassment, you're automatically on the outs. 

The work enivronment is so stressful, over 50% of the staff have taken stress leave at least once while working there. If you have a second job because the hours are insufficient, again you are frowned upon.

Working at Cassellholme is like working at the zoo, except the staff are caged in and managment are the animals, running loose with no idea how to run a successful business in an ever so demanding industry.

If there were more options for LTC homes, Cassellholme wouldn't even be running. Luckily for Cassellholme, they always have a heads up before the health inspectors come.

The workplace does not leave  you with a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. Staff are required to finish tasks that are not directly related to patients care and therefore care is compromised. Charting is needed however far too much of the charting is not directly related to the resident which means you are answering unnecessary questions on %50 of the charts .cleaning closets and bedside tables should be relegated to laundry and housekeeping staff to free up time for psws to do actual care. pushing snack carts around the halls and handing out snacks  should be relegated to kitchen staff which would save psws almost an hour per shift. Checking and signing lifts should be relegated to maintenance staff.  The amount of residents per caregiver/psw needs to be more reasonable. It,s not about being unwilling to work its about not being rushed so staff can spend a reasonable amount of time with each resident.

What is the best part of working at the company?
In my experience, the workplace culture here was difficult and often unprofessional. Management support and communication were inconsistent, and there was a lot of gossip, cliques, and conflict between staff. It created a stressful environment that made it hard to do your job well.

That said, some coworkers were genuinely kind, and the residents were the best part of the job—very sweet and rewarding to work with. I learned a lot, but I wouldn’t return because the team environment and leadership made it a negative experience overall and that is very well known here in North Bay by anyone who works here. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was the toxic staff culture—gossip, cliques, and backstabbing—plus inconsistent support and communication from management.

Please only consider a position within this company if you have a desire to work hard, understand that this is the home of the residents and this is their everyday life. They don’t get to leave and “go home”. The expectations and work load is heavy because your dealing with a variety of humans who want things particular and then working alongside staff who aren’t always willing to do the work required. The managers and supervisors work tirelessly to appease the staff and the residents. Ultimately the staff to resident ratio isn’t great but the desire to be better is there. 
If you follow your job description, work hard, help out and be kind you’ll do great!
You can expect a cold treat on a hot day, some laughs some cries and many memories when working there! Some managers go out of their way to ensure the staff are doing ok. Although some days are tough.  

Everyone there competes with eachother, it seems like the PSW's are jealous of anyone who is a nursing student or a new grad waiting to write the exam, they feel threatened that they will be becoming nurses. There is way too much drama and everyone talks behind eachothers backs. You can't trust anyone. Scheduling is also a nightmare. You get hired in a permanant position then get 2 shifts every 2 weeks, then suddenly you will get a call asking where you are on your day off, to find out they added more shifts to your schedule without telling you! The pay is pretty competitive, but not worth it. I've seen people left with dried feces covering their entire body for at least 6 hours before I came in, so either nobody checked or they saw and didn't care enough to do their job and clean them! So sad to see. Not a good place to work 

Cassellholme is an awful place to work, we are short most of the time, and they do not offer overtime for staff to pick up. The do not care if we are short staffed and do not post shifts when we are short, they say it’s the program that doesn’t allow them to post the shift even though we have another program that can. We have too many managers and no one wants to do any actual managing of the home.  The hardest part of the job is dealing with the lack of management or lack of support for their staff, as well as seeing the decline in standards of care. The enjoyable part of the job is doing the best I can for the residents.

Excessive shortage of all staff, from PSWs to RPNs to RNs.  Last minute call outs leaving several wings short of staff.  On day shifts  there are more RNs, RPNs and PSWs.  On evenings and overnights, there is always a extreme shortage.  Especially on overnights when there is only one RN on duty and he or she must handle everything due to call outs.  Suggestion: All RNs and RPNs wear a body cam on every shift, and that cameras be installed in all areas in all wings, So management can see what goes on and what challenges we face on a daily basis.
