Chelsea Hotel

A typical day at work for would be that I first get my cash float organized, then I start printing the guests list for the airlines that we have in house at the current time. My first job is to check that all the crew members for the 10+ airlines staying with us are all in their correct rooms and that their wake up times are set up correctly for the next day. 

Then I move on to the front desk where I check-in guests that are still trickling into the hotel while getting the desk ready for the next day. I answer guests inquiries about late check out, where food is located outside the hotel, and various other things.

I also check the credit limit report to make sure that guests are able to pay their bills when they check out, and if they are not I inform the morning managers of any discrepant rooms. 

A few times a week though I act as Night Status, which entails me working at a computer in the back office, taking calls, and making sure the reports for all necessary departments are printed out and delivered. I also am required to help the staff at the desk find rooms if they are needed. I also give them advice on how to help guests that have difficult requests. I act as somewhat of a manager during these nights as the Night Duty Manager might be off dealing with something and is unavailable to assist at that current moment.

I enjoy working here, my co-workers are nice, and the management is friendly and supportive. I am looking to expand my horizons and learn more about the hotel industry to reach my goal of higher management at some point.

Culture is a vital and unique part of every organization. It's what makes people decide to join a team and is the biggest reason employees choose to stay or leave. Chelsea is a fun and family orientated hotel. Regardless of position or rank, employees are meant to feel as if their role in the business is vital for operation. Senior Management is very supportive and always empower their teams. If you are looking to work in silos, then Chelsea is not the workplace for you, employees and department work together as a team to achieve common objectives. Leadership and coaching programs are implemented and stressed. Existing leaders put their subordinates in position to succeed, and the best performing employees are put on the track for leadership positions. Recognition is a big part of Chelsea’s culture; your hard work never gets unnoticed. There is a great in-house recognition program in place to keep the employees constantly motivated. Salaries and wages are very competitive, including the Health & Welfare Plan. Overall, if you are looking to learn, grow, and develop professionally, I highly recommend that you once work for his hotel which is also called “Chelsea University.”

Working at Chelsea Hotel was challenging as is in other hotels. No work-life balance but it is typical in the hotel industry. Employees are encouraged to go on vacation during low season so if you are looking to go on vacation to your home country for a few months it is possible. Salary is very competitive and is probably the best in the city in the hotel industry. However, you barely get any shifts during the low season, maybe 3 to 2 times a week. Front desk manager tends to fire people easily. No room for growth unless you are the favourite which the manager does not hide and all employees notice it. Manager barely does any department meeting and she only communicates via email. There was barely any one-on-one assessment. They said it was supposed to be done on employee anniversary but only happened once to me. Too much drama created by higher ups instead of focusing on improving service. Most employees want to quit except for seniors who are not intimidated by the manager. Overall, although salary is high it does not pay for the stress the employees get.



As the largest hotel in Canada, the Chelsea Toronto is a beast; lots of action, lots of departments, and huge teams to manage. A wonderful place to learn and grow.  The culture is a little stale, and is in need of new ideas and fresh perspective at department head levels and above if service standards and colleague satisfaction are to continue to improve.  The hardware is in decline and the general feeling amongst colleagues is that the hotel will be demolished in the coming years.  That being said, it is still an energetic and blisteringly fast-paced place to work, especially during the summer months.  If you do work here, be prepared to get a wealth of experience in the industry, if you are so inclined to put yourself in a position to learn as a much as possible.

I really enjoyed working at the Chelsea. A day was never dull as guests are from literally everywhere. 
I got to learn more about Toronto and had some really great co-workers.
Management was not always the best in terms of approachability. It felt very exclusive, but I understand that it could be because everyone had such large responsibility. However, management was always accommodating and nice!
The hardest part of the job was keeping up. As a reservations agent it could sometimes get very busy and trying to more then one thing at a time was often very difficult. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was definitely the problem solving and interaction with guests.

A good company to work for new immigrant in the country. It provides a steady work hours and income to support a family for new comers in Canada. Lots of employees to mingle during breaks and socializes during the company's annual Christmas party or company events.

The Chelsea is the largest hotel in Canada with 1590 guest rooms.  It is vibrant and fresh and a great place to work.
I was a business travel sales manager and it was deemed necessary after 1 year and a 1/2 to eliminate my position in order for the hotel to restructure the group sales position.

The management is always harassing about something. The are always looking for the smallest things to give you a warning or write up about. They want height turnover to reduce costs. 
No breaks or food for some of the staff. 
Unsafe work situations.
Spend most of your down time doing pest control.

No room for growth, and forget about ever having a social life as there is no such thing in the hospitality industry. Fun place to work with great co-workers, and discounts/free hotel stays at other properties, but that’s about it.
