CMH is chill compared to other muni organizations I have worked in or heard about.
- The pay/benefits I describe as typical versus similar sized muni's. Mid-range in that range.
- You get an EDO, I recommend ask for the best vacation time with your experience otherwise you might get stuck with something less (this is the Union's fault not management). Generous earned sick day policy IMO. Very family friendly (i.e., use sick days to look after family members).
- The organization I found to be low stress. The Finance Department is chill. People like and DO laugh & make jokes, wear hoodies. It is laid back. Managers are very approachable I found. The staff very likeable.
- If you are reading this because of a supervisor position caught your eye. Good place to take that next step in your career. Very supportive managers.
- The bad? Location if you're an Edmonton/Calgary type (3.5 hours drive to Calgary). It is the hub for SE Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and weekend trips from northern Montana. However, if you like nature - lots of Prov. parks nearby. Prices a bit more than other cities but utilities were like half (City owns its own utilities). Hatters really like cinnamon buns, vegetables (many greenhouses in the area) and pickle soup I noticed. 

If you’re a diligent, forward-thinking individual, don’t waste your time working at the Family Leisure Centre (FLC). However it could be the perfect job if you enjoy socializing; just don’t expect to gain experience or advance your career.

-	enhanced job title and job description. Fitness Leader = greet members and clean; you won't be responsible for much personal or group fitness
-	don’t expect similar opportunities as co-workers
-	minimal growth and development my management to improve the functioning of the team and the facility

The City of Medicine Hat – and therefore the FLC – operates in a very inefficient and unfair manner.

-	hiring process takes months
-	low wages and paper timesheets
-	multiple temporary employees replace a full-time position
-	shift times and hours vary considerably, inhibiting a second job

The City does a terrible job of promoting the FLC and any qualified individuals they employee, so get comfortable with an unsatisfactory position or find a different place to work!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
senior leadership is woefully unqualified for the requirements of a municipal corporation that generates its own power. CAO is antagonistic to both staff and public, and protects her position by hiring friends and past associates to senior roles.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
toxic - council and senior administration are completely dysfunctional. There is no longer any public trust in either council or the CAO. Corporate administration functions are unclear.  Work is highly stressful due to fear of layoffs or reorganization, and there is no recourse to Humans Resources since they are now under direct control to the CAO

do what you're told, don't ask questions

Poor work life balance, and directionless management groups.  The goalposts for success were constantly changing, and countless strong contributors were thrown under the bus for no reason.  Legitimately did not care or have concern for many of their front line staff, and very little support or confidence building in their leaders.  Many multi-year professionals, some having worked for 25+ years at the City are cut adrift with no warning.  I had to leave as it was destroying my passion for my field, and I know others who did too.  There is nothing being done to facilitate a positive workplace culture, and it starts with an incompetent management group.



What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with fellow workers was great. Administrative staff were mostly unaware of things going on and did not treat workers fairly.

Administrative staff treating workers unfairly.

Work environment was stressful when dealing with certain administrative staff. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Days were usually quite busy with more work than one person could do in a day.

Senior Management at the time would not support effective planning.  They undermined every reasonable effort to advance good planning practices.  Extremely high turnover in staff due to senior management behavior.  Hiring, mentoring and training new staff was difficult given the attitude and behavior of senior management accommodations to those violating the laws and written policies of the city.  Staff tried their best in all departments to work around this challenge but it was difficult at best.  It took new leadership and a change in council to bring about more effective planning efforts.

Having a nice office, the buildings are well maintained. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The company has terrible work culture and can be rather toxic. Especially leadership. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very hierarchical, the leaders think they are untouchable and do not follow even the standards and policies of the organization. They permit bullying and harassment.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Open door policy, safety over product, always looking at new ideas to change old ways. Training is available if you want to advance

There have been some early mornings

Family, all the co workers feel like family. It is not work, if you do something you love . 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
8 hours no problems. Early starts and done by 2pm, 3pm on a late day

City of Medicine Hat is the most toxic and dysfunctional organization I’ve ever worked for. Turnover is constant, there is little to know progression forward, the company lacks even minimal effective innovation, the culture is toxic, and employees are treated like liabilities. The worst part is the incredible waste of taxpayer dollars on high end leadership who are the cause of the massive dysfunction in the first place. Pay and benefits are terrible. Not competing for excellent workers. Avoid this organization at all costs!

Work life balance, good team work in my division. Great team to work with on a daily basis. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes unreal expectations from community residents. True lack of understanding what the real costs of running a city are, so always educating people.

Very team oriented in my department and division.
