Unfortunately not very Safety focused, which is never a desired company to work for. They need more experienced, safety focused individuals in their higher positions. They have somewhat of the proper procedures in place, unfortunately no one believes them that "enforces them".

Confidentiality is extremely poor. This again comes from the lack of experience and lack of diverse management. Also an issue in a small town which is expected. Need people that have not grown up in Tumbler running the show. 

Tumbler is a great town to live in, I have been living here for 5 years and the people are fantastic outside of work. 

Extremely negative place to work, just brings everyones morals down. Once again this comes to mid level management. 

Expect your shifter to yell at you on the radio and put you down when you ask questions, especially involving safety. Some shifters on the other hand are fantastic. 

I would never recommend this company unless your options were extremely limited and had no other choice.

A place to work as much as you can, turn a blind eye, and get a decent cheque for a short time.

Advice: Offer a little more money to middle level management, attract some qualified employees and almost all of these issues disappear.

Really wanted this position to work out.

Some good things: comp package is excellent, no complaints.
Company hires to promote a respectful culture. 

But:expectations are unrealistic given the resources provided. 
The least skilled workforce I've seen.
Ancient equipment with limited budget to improve.
Zero understanding or commitment to improve reliability. 

People in leadership positions that are woefully unqualified.
CYA culture is deeply embedded - the worst I've seen anywhere.
Very minor problems are immediately elevated to Dept. Managers.
This is typical with the wrong people in leadership positions. 

Safety was my biggest concern. They do not walk the talk.
I resigned before I had to deal with a fatality under my Supervision. 

With some time to reflect, it is clear the Co is short term.
All mining is, but this is different. 
Most mining Co's have a vision a few years out.
Conuma operates on a week to week basis.
There is zero long term planning of anything.
Met coal prices are on the decline.
I'd expect lights out pretty soon. 

Expect I'm not alone in this conclusion.
And this is part of the reason they cannot recruit qualified local talent.

It's all a giant buddy club. It's either you're in or you're not. Frontline supervisors are mistreated and disrespected on a daily. High expectations and unrealistic goals. If the goals aren't hit they get reprimanded. If the goals are hit, they will also get reprimanded for not hitting such goals in a way they wanted them to be hit. There is no winning. Management will viciously send out emails throughout the shift stating everything they are doing wrong. There will be the odd time they will receive an "atta boy!" Which will most likely reflect in more negative emails in the near future. These supervisors are so disrespected that the company has yet to pay them out their unused vacation pay outs from 2024. The hourly employees have all received theirs. The supervisors have yet to receive theirs with no date when to expect or a reason as to why it hasn't been received and it's now entering the middle of April. This is most likely why the turnover rate for shifters at this mine is so frequent. The people that are running the company for these people can't even be treated with respect. If I were you, if you want to be paid properly, treated like an asset and have a positive work environment... I would say this is not the place for you.

Pros:
- Excellent pay.
- Friendly co-workers.
- 12 hours a day.
- 1 week on, 1 week off.
- Wonderful owner (CEO), great guy!

Cons:
- Management was passive aggressive, rude, disrespectful, micro-managed, and set me up for failure by giving falsely granted poor grades as an excuse for dismissal.
- Management took requests from those that wished to try new things. They then set people up on machines they don't want to do out of spite and pettiness so they can laugh about it privately.
- Management never presented opportunity to various workers to prove their worth, knowledge and dedicated. Judgment was often based on favouritism, seniority and job status. If you were a regular worker, you will be treated poorly, yelled at, and belittled in front of co-workers. If you're a mechanic or someone else of importance, you'll be treated with respect and dignity.

Other thoughts:
- I really wish I could award 2 or even 3 stars overall. But due to how I was treated, regardless how amazing the owner is, I can't spare it or recommend working there to anyone wishing for some stability or job security. People work there mainly for the money because there is very little incentive to stick around for anything else.

A typical workday for an admin staff such as myself starts at 7 am and ends at 4 pm Monday to Friday, giving you the evenings and weekends to relax and unwind. There are lots of new things to learn every day. 

The multi-culture environment makes the workplace even more interesting. You would be surprised (in a good way) as to what you can learn from different cultures. Everyone here are very friendly and supportive giving you a reason and a chance to be a better person than you were the previous day. 

The only disadvantage is the location of the Willow Mine. It is situated 30 minutes from Chetwynd towards Mackenzie and for those living outside of Chetwynd it may be a hassle to travel for work. 

But hey, remember all good things come at a cost. In this scenario it is Travel.
If you are willing to travel for 30 min to 1 hour for work then rest assured you will be happy with the work environment, pay, etc. 

It is an extreme pleasure working here; especially when you have so much room from growth and the pay is good as well.

I have been with Conuma since the start, and first hand seen them grow into the company they are today. Most of it is good, some of it is not. I genuinely believe the upper management who started all of this want what is best for the company and its employees. They have been true to their word, and have continued to show honesty and integrity. The money is good, along with the benifits and bonuses. Sadly, a lot of the middle management (managers, gf’s, etc...) are the same ones from the western and Walter days. Worse yet is the hr department... one would think that to work in hr you would have to care about people, or at least show traits of humanity, apparently not. If there is one thing in common across the whole pit at the wolverine, it’s the hatred for HR. They play favourites, hire friends and family, and good luck if you have them the stink eye in the past.  Someone should buy them a dictionary so they can learn what confidential means. But overall, if you can keep away from them, this really Is a great place to work and I’m happy to work for CONUMA.

Great place to live/work for those who enjoy outdoors and prefer quiet to a noisy city. Great learning opportunities for career growth and ability to be challenged on a daily basis. Chetwynd and Tumbler offer safe locations for raising a family. 

I have learnt more here in 5 years than most engineers at larger companies would learn in 10. Management wants to see you succeed and provides support to get you where you want to go. 

Culture is continually evolving to be more positive than when I first started and is heading in the right direction year over year. 

The hardest part of the job for me was being away from my family until my wife was able to move to Chetwynd. 

The coworkers and management at Conuma are what make the job worth it. You really feel more than just another employee every day. You feel the impact you make to the business every day you come to work. I look forward to waking up in the morning and coming to work at Conuma. 


Work is never perfect, but this company makes it pretty close! Until I win the lottery, I’m happy to be part of such a great team. They’re a solid company that promptly addresses issues and strives to make things right. Management is approachable and easy to talk to, which isn’t something you find everywhere. The pay is excellent, and the benefits are top-notch, with bonuses as a nice perk. The pay and schedule create a great work-life balance, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I’ve worked in several places, but this has been my longest-lasting job for a reason—they genuinely invest in their employees, helping you grow and build your career. The encouragement from management and colleagues really pushes you to aim higher. They’re also active in supporting the community, making a real impact. Overall, it’s a company that treats people well and fosters a positive, supportive environment.

A typical day at work started with uncertainty about the tasks for the day. Communication was often poor. Managers and coworkers became untrustworthy. 
The culture is good in the pit operations and the Plant operations seems to be getting by because there are some great people involved, however the conveyor crew is poorly managed.  Lack of procedures, structure, organization and safety are concerning to me. Fear based management and inexperienced HR teams are present. I enjoyed carrying out many of the tasks assigned, and I learned some new skills.  However my experience overall became increasingly negative and led to a wrongful dismissal. This position may be a good starting point for someone who is newly entering the work force however I would not recommend long term commitment to Conuma Resources. 

After moving my life to northeast BC and being fed a line of lies, I regret doing it for a job with Conuma Coal. The orientation feeds a person with hope and makes it seem like a great place to work. The mines are far from town, unpaid commute and 15 hours + by the time a guy gets home, that's no good. Bonuses are given out unfairly and the absentee program means you better work through the flu or else you lose bonus or potentially your job. The equipment is poorly maintained, production comes before repair and the maintenance budget is poor. Equipment is in bad shape. I have worked on all 4 rotations and every shift has bad moral and ignorant supervisors.  There is a lot of disrespect and drama and not what I want to support and work hard for. I currently am looking for a new job and deeply regret believing Conuma Coal's mission statement.
