The majority of senior workers say work as slow as possible and steal time because this company is run by an empty headed fool; believe them. Don’t tear your hair out trying to fix the mistakes they have made, as the higher ups have no practical experience despite what they may have written on their resume, in real situations they drop the ball with knowledge of machine operation and ability to comprehend time constraints with temperature. Highest paid employees with the most influence lack the ability to hustle. You will burn yourself out here like a salmon swimming upstream, with no nourishment available but salted meat on an unpaid break. You will cover every single job posting they have up for only 30 hours a week and 70% of the work is sanitation - mid-day- so you will have to be cold in production areas for the remainder of your day.

Denningers is a German-run company based out of Hamilton, Ontario. I was the employee that worked in the department where good help was needed most. One day I could be working in the restaurant; another day in the deli department; another day in the catering department. While working for this company I quickly understood that individual performances were being watched keenly; and if you proved yourself, there were rewards and advancement. Management was strict, and understandably so. The store was run like a well oiled machine. My co-workers were hard-working, friendly and very helpful. This was truly a team effort run environment. At times the work could be very hard physically, but in the end your hard work was acknowledged and rewarded.

If you get hired in packaging department, be prepared to work long hours 4 days a week, with short Friday. Its cold and wet, and you never know when you go home. Supervisor there is horrible, with no people's skill, always unhappy with everything, toxic and abusive, and shouldn't be allowed to manage people. Treats people with no respect, and plant manager only listens to her, cause new employees are disposable. If you care for your mental health, don't get hired in packaging.  Be prepared to only work for some months when they are most busy, your probation period is 6 months, so you can always get fired with no explanation. They hire just about everyone cause no one stays there for long.
Majority of workers and office personnel are good people, but even one person can make a workplace miserable.

Overall company culture was good. Well staffed and upper management made you feel valued with holiday gift bags and gift cards. Some coworkers were quite demanding and intense - you always had to be busy or at least make yourself look busy. I have respect for the store managers. They were a nice group of mostly women that were quite comfortable helping out with what may be seen as more menial tasks (whether that be cleaning the ovens and floors to helping serve). Good food and friendly, respectful customers (some traveled from far away to get schnitzel which made them a joy to serve).

Many colleagues were great but the bistro department was demanding and intense at times.   

The food discount when working and the store discount were both great!

Typical day started in the backroom receiving various orders, grocery, meat/ deli, bakery, produce and dairy. After that you begin working the orders for your department and then head to the floor and fix and fill any displays, assist customers and other staff with anything they may need. Maintaining cleanliness and organization of department and backroom.  The customers are great because they come from all over the world and getting to meet them is exciting in its own right. The hardest part of the job is just being on your feet and running around to the back and floor and bending and kneeling. I enjoyed working here for the short time that I did, the staff make you feel like family and the customers are great to get to know!

The hardest part of the job was the first week,because of my english is not perfekt,but they gave me a chance to work there and after they shown me what to do everything went really good.

The most enjoyable part of the job was that I did not need to speak while I was working.

We made salads,soaps and many kind of foods every day. After finished cooking I cleaned the dishes and washed the floors.

The best part of the job was getting to work with a very knowledgeable Chef 

Aside from that 
- The pay was terrible... compared to the restaurant business as an experienced line cook, not even close 

- The hours are demanding, you will never know when you are going home... and you start 6AM every day 

- Physically demanding... work you like a brick layer and pay you like a dishwasher 

- no paid breaks

- never work a stat day so they don’t have to pay you more money 

- to serious a work environment

- Walk in Freezer is always a disaster when looking for ingredients 

- Kitchen staff is always short people due to quitting all the time

- Ownership is Cheap... that’s the main thing you will take away from working here

At Denningers, the average work day was approximately 7-10 hours.The environment was very pleasant and all of us got along really well. We all worked together as a team and were able to complete all tasks. I was solely responsible for the deli section, which included slicing all meats, organizing the meat show case, organizing the coolers, and serving all clients needs. I really enjoyed this job because all of my co-workers were very friendly and made me feel welcomed when I first started. I enjoyed interacting with the customers and getting to know new people.

Denninger's has been a blast to work at over the last two years. The company offers a lot of perks, from benefits to grocery discount and frequent appreciation gifts. Work expectations are reasonable, it definitely still feels like a family owned business, which is great to see. Upper management is very responsive and 'down to earth' in their expectations and can always be counted on to help out.  The colleagues are also quite friendly and helpful, and there is a lot of room to grow. 

A good mix of full time employees and students that just make it difficult. Enjoy closing with students who have no safe food handling experience and be horrified at how they store the food. (Hot food directly into fridge) enjoy full time employees that think they run the show, they obviously work harder and do more prep than anyone but that goes straight to their head. It's a miserable environment when it slows doen, the bistro chef can't get a work schedule right.
