DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD OF NIAGARA

During my time with the DSBN my daily routine included, supervising students when they arrived to school, and during nutrition and fitness breaks. I covered the administrative clerks during their was absents.
This past year the school I was employed at closed, during this process I took inventory of all necessary supplies, and equipment for the school board. I cover our regular special needs feeder while she is away.
When I wasn't fulfilling my regular job obligations, I volunteered the rest of day to the school in many different capacities. 
There hasn't been a day in 5 years that I haven't looked forward to seeing all the students, and staff. I can't give a favourite or hard part of my job, I truly have loved every minute.
I have learned a great deal of patience and compassion working with children and adults with different back ground and needs.
I would make a great addition to any staff. I'm very easy going with a strong work ethic.

open the classroom up and wait for students to come. 
take attendance
talk with students about some aspect of plants 
have the students copy a note off the board
go to the greenhouse and demonstrate the lesson learned 
have students work on various plants to get them ready for a plant sale
cleanup at the end of the period and dismiss the students 
I tried to make learning fun and they learned skills form life
With some special needs classes I'd assign jobs for the teacher assistants to do with some of the students.
Working with students was most enjoyable
The politics in education was difficult at times 

Building wood projects, laying brick, working on cars, pouring and finishing concrete and constructing a house was all enjoyable with students.

I'm a positive person and try to bring out the good in others

Meet the classroom teacher. Go over the itinerary, and curriculum for the student you will be supporting. I learned different ways to communicate with students based on their cognitive level, or language barriers (if any) Each student learns differently than the next. Hardest part of the job as a casual EA was not fully knowing the student, and having little information to go on. It really is just a matter of how well you can read body language, and signs/cues if there is anxiety present. The most enjoyable part of the job is meeting new people and having a successful and productive day. I have enjoyed every single school I was at and found the job exciting as every day is a new day to explore

A career as an Educational Assistant in a Secondary school is truly rewarding. It is challenging, exciting, busy and inspirational. Our number one teacher(s) are the students with exceptionalities. 
As an EA in the field for 15 years, a burnout phase seems to be among many employees as the funding is not there to staff departments accordingly. This makes for mentally and physically draining days as we work without breaks, the students and staff are unsafe due to being understaffed, and many students cannot be integrated into mainstream classes for credit as the support is not there.

This board couldn’t careless about any of the employees. Staff who get out in Vp and P positions basically have a few board driven classes and all of a sudden claim they can run a school. They can’t!
Most in these positions and higher have only ever been with a school board so no real work experience outside of this setting. They couldn’t organize a one car parade. No community, no feeling of support. They should regroup on who should get more pay. It shouldn’t be the people running the show at the board office.  Bullies!

I enjoy the flexibility of this position, as I have the chance to choose the days I work (given that there are jobs available), the schools I choose to accept jobs at, and I can book days off when I need them. There is very little room for advancement into Long-Term positions, and Permanent will take many, many years within this Board (unless you have your French qualifications). Overall recommend, they are great employers. If you’re looking for Permanent soon, this is not the Board for you.

Not much good to say really ! Besides Pension and benefits which are both good but not great this board and especially management is terrible

Management is absolutely terrible.

Because of management it’s really is a toxic environment

It is ok. Work is not bad. It’s not too busy or slow.

There is a lot of daily work available .

Dealing with behaviours in the classroom.

Teaching in classrooms that can be large and split.

Busy. Non stop. often minimal support.

Wonderful support system . Colleagues and main office senior administration 
offer constructive and beneficial assistance as needed.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The efforts required to maintain a healthy balance between job expectations, school community expectations, and family needs.

Started volunteering at Gordon Public School since 2004 and I was offered the job in 2009 until present time.  Unfortunately the tutoring program I was doing was suspended by the government and couldn't go back to work in September 2017.  Overall experience was amazing since I really enjoy working with children and watch them progress.
