The peer-to-peer culture at DNOW is strong—co-workers on the operations floor generally get along well, creating a good atmosphere among the team. However, management is where the problems begin. While employees are expected to go above and beyond, there is little appreciation shown, and the compensation is either right at or just below industry expectations, depending on the individual's experience. Raises are hard to come by and selectively awarded, and if you’re not aiming for a leadership role, it’s tough to move beyond a base pay of around $24/hr. Even for those who do make it to lead or supervisor positions, the pay remains at a bare-minimum, median rate.

Communication between the two warehouse managers is severely lacking. The outbound manager often gets visibly upset without explaining his frustrations, leaving employees in the dark. He also has a habit of being a control freak, frequently micromanaging tasks that are already under control. For example, he has shifted workplace layouts a handful of times per year, in both buildings, for little to no reason. Yet, when his presence is genuinely needed, especially during tasks that require a more seasoned look, he’s often absent. His inconsistent involvement only adds to the confusion and frustration among the team.

Management, as a whole, suffers from a lack of follow-through. They frequently preach about events for recognizing hard work and extended overtime, but they rarely follow through. When employees provide feedback or express concerns, there are long delays in addressing them. Instead of showing appreciation for consistent, quality work, management is more focused on reminding employees of the few times they make mistakes. You’ll always hear about the bad, but rarely about the good. This dysfunctional system trickles down from top to bottom, with the two warehouse managers frequently on different pages. The operations manager often demands answers without getting involved in day-to-day tasks, and the general manager mirrors this behavior by doing the same to the operations manager. In fact, the general manager is rarely seen, offering vague opinions and little in the way of actual solutions.

The warehouse supervisor is excellent—supportive, fair, and involved—(and quite honestly should be their outbound warehouse manager instead), but the higher you go up the management chain, the worse things get. Over the last year, many good employees have left because the company lacks any real vision or direction for the future. They tend to prioritize hiring cheaper, more compliant workers rather than valuing and fairly compensating those who consistently go above and beyond. This applies across all departments, including operations, sales, and support.

While DNOW gives off the perception that they’re doing better than they are, the reality is a steady decline in both staff and facilities. If you’re looking for a company that values your contributions and offers growth, DNOW may not be the best option.

Distribution Now is an overall positive place if you get the opportunity to work for. I have had the pleasure of being in the Edmonton location  for nearly 8 years and parted due to economic changes. during my time i have had multiple learning opportunity in the oil and gas industry stretching from a basic picker to management. 

They often prefer people with minimal industry experience and train you up properly. this also is a benefit if you ever want to try out a management position in the future.

one word of caution I would pass on is that it can be a demanding job. be prepared to do overtime and weekend shifts during peak season. with that been said i would also like to say that if you do your time you will be rewarded for it. i would say that Dnow pays there employees above average in the city

management has been mostly a positive impact on me. Its not uncommon to see someone getting out of their office and get down a dirty when the work load demands it. We always work on getting the most efficient results in safest way possible. 

Lastly i want to talk about attitude. Even though its a place of business its a very positive and fun place to work. you will find yourself doing activities to bond with others often. Meeting are key in communication and focused on things beyond business, you will find they always touch on a customer service and safety moments as they are also key components to the company.

I entered this Oil and Gas based company ready to learn and that's exactly what I did. This company is very customer service oriented. 
Coming in to the job, my aim was to improve myself and my skills on paper after spending many years travelling and nurturing my soul. The people I worked with there have been in the industry for a long time so I was able to gain a lot of insight from these people and take on many mentors. I learned a lot about a lot while working there and the new atmosphere and people I worked with showed me many new things and helped guide me toward a higher learning.
The customer service role that came with my particular the job were both the best and worst aspects. I am no stranger to customer service, but I was dealing with so many different kinds of people in the oil field as well as internally and externally around the office that I would often run in to new challenges with new people which I faced openly.

The day usually started around  6:30 am and would beginning by everyone going through freight to prepare for orders that would be going out the door that day. We would also deal stock at this time, by receiving and pitting it away. A big part of the day was the daily cycle count and making sure we had the correct inventory and volume on the shelf to ensure customer needs were being met. Then once the morning rush was over we would ensure that the warehouse was left neat and tidy and ready for what might come next. The place was great to work and the customers that we dealt with everyday we equally great and fun to deal with. 

I also completed sales order, did up quotes and followed up with customers, both external and internal to ensure they were receiving the best service possible.

unfortunately the oil down turn is still having an effect our business which has had a very large impact to the bottom line.

Of all the warehouses I have been, this is probably the most low-tech ones. So many old people leading teams and it's the order pickers work harder than the management. No job advancements whatsoever and even if you did, I've watched promoted people got fired months after. The sales team screw things up with one of the projects and they fired other departments to compensate for that lost which is unfair they fired the smart and hardworking ones and they kept the old folks that don't do much. Bottom line, if you are not that desperate for a job then look somewhere else. 

Offers great benefits but pay is below average. Favouritism is prominent. No raise incentives. Compensation reviews are pointless, unless you transfer positions. Performance reviews are a new concept and not enforced properly. Loyalty isn’t rewarded/recognized. Sad to see such great people with hard work ethics constantly leave due to pay/management. Poor communication from all levels of management. Over a short time you realize you are just a number not a valued employee. Very safety oriented. Offers tons of training.

A typical day at work is 9-5 at the downtown location. I review credit lines and credit requests anywhere from $5,000 to $250,000 depending on Company and project.

I learned the Oil and Gas distribution/ finance industry and how to work with numerous groups to reach a common goal.

Management is approachable at specific levels.

Culture is good, very progressive but they have a tendency to reduce staff based on the O&G activity. This is understandable but still a difficult part of the job.

The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting and dealing with numerous companies and people on a daily basis. The people ended up not only being customers but friends.

My biggest learning at this job was adjusting to SAP. In my previous buying position there was less responsibility about our spend, this was overseen by the company we were contracted by. At DNOW we were accountable to some degree for our purchasing. My favourite part of this job and all others was dealing with the people at my stores as well as the camaraderie shared with my co workers.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Decent middle management folks. Not a lot of micro managing. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with a bunch of egomaniacs in upper management positions that came from TS&M. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
At street level the culture is OK. The upper management when I worked there  all seem to be pulled from TS&M and had massive egos and weren’t even approachable. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Traveling western Canada doing sales.

Management very effective on finding my replacement. They were courteous when relieving me of my position. Would not make offer CLOSER TO MYHOME location OR  find me a job that reflected my experience and knowledge. Both d now and myself came to an agreement that was acceptable .Enjoyed the daily challenges with the company. But it all comes down to ensuring the profitability of the company. My tenure was at the lowest of economical times and I am glad to have had this experience.
