DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG BIZ

I'm not very good at reviews but I will try my best to do it justice!

I started working for Downtown Winnipeg Biz on July 4th and so far I have been very much enjoying it! I can't guarantee you'll have the same experience as I do as I wanted the job for two things, forcing myself to be social and physically active and this job gives that in abundance which was PERFECT for me!

Before I started working at the Biz I was in a bad way physically, mentally, and spiritually.
I thought my life had no purpose and I was destined to fade away, one day I decided that I needed a push to better myself so I joined a program to help me find my purpose job so to speak and after many months of searching and researching I almost gave up.

Then near the end of the program my let's say support person asked me if I would be interested in the Biz, at first when I looked at it I wasn't sure, lots of walking and social interaction would be required and at the time I just wanted a job that was inside and as little social interaction as possible... Then it dawned on me, I should not shut myself out to the world I should put myself out and in the open and try to get that spirit back I lost! Worst case I learn something about myself and best case I find my "purpose job"!

So I said yes let's do it, got referred, and got a call for an interview. I was so excited and nervous at the time and thinking all the ways I might not be accepted bad leg, out of shape out of practice in the customer service industry et cetera et cetera.

I pushed those thoughts out did my best and hoped for the best!
During the interview process we were doing scenario questions and I had been asked this one question that I thought was a scenario question "there's a cankerworm on your back" my mind interpreted it as "What would you do if a cankerworm fell on your back" I answered I'd putt it back on the tree of course!
The interviewer then said no there's a cankerworm on your back! I felt so embarrassed and admitted I thought it was a scenario question and we all laughed.

From that moment on I knew I wanted to work with them for sure!

What can I say about the Biz itself? I'm not an expert in anything business related and no business non-profit or for-profit is perfect by any means, there are a few things I have opinions on but for the most part I am wholeheartedly satisfied with the Biz.

The only disappointment I have is the lack of uniform sizes for bigger men like me but I completely understand it's not every day you have people like me joining a highly physically active job doing hours of walking, so I won't hold it against them.

Sorry for the short novel but I wanted to be completely honest about my feelings and thoughts about the Biz.

Also, I apologize for my bad grammar.

I am very impressed with the fact that so many people at the BIZ care about downtown, each other and all people who are in downtown. 

People try to make it a better work place. There have been days off added for mental health. Days off for sick time is way better than I've seen elsewhere. So many decisions are made with staff in mind. There is genuine concern for each other from people all levels of the organization shown in many ways.  

There is always lots of work to do but there is still time taken to do have staff get together to celebrate in the summer and over the holiday season. I am sure more will happen as the pandemic eases. 

Will you get rich working for the BIZ? no!
Is there a chance to contribute to community in a meaningful way? yes!
Will you work with good people? yes!
Are there some great jobs there? yes!

As a downtown watch volunteer is kind a stressful job because i have to walk around downtown. I have to look intoxicated person,an aggressive pandhandler, a person who are sleeping in the street. I have to help people who are missing and giving a description to supervisor and all staff. I also give people direction in downtown area for their safety. My co-worker are also good, they're friendly. They're all staff and I'm a volunteer.The hardest part of the job is handling an intoxicated person because they're aggressive and they're not in right mind. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping people around downtown and giving direction.

Patrol the streets of downtown, interact with various people and businesses on the daily basis. Able to learn customer service skills, use problem solving enable to adapt in different situations when necessary. Co-workers where fun to be with and career driven that help me to push towards education and finding a well suited career. The enjoyable part of the job was meeting people and interacting with them to help them with their needs and concerns about the downtown environment.

The Downtown BIZ does good work in the downtown community by working to make it a better and safer place for the people who live, work, and venture into the area. A typical day at work includes getting task orders from the supervisor and completing those, and doing other odd jobs. The staff are well treated. The hardest part of the job is working outdoors on cold winter days. The most enjoyable part of the job is talking to my co-workers. I often hear people thanking us for our work or complementing our work.

Working at the BIZ was a great experience which helped me advance my career. 

The senior managment team empowered and supported me from day one. Everyone is friendly and committed to making downtown Winnipeg a better place. Senior Managment team preaches “work life balance” and cares deeply for all employees. They show it with days off, parties and other creative/ fun experiences throughout the year.

If you want to have fun going to work and love the people you work with, this is the environment you are looking for!

Rewarding work that makes the community a better place. However, it is a dead-end job with no chance for growth or promotion due to the size. As far as work or not for profits go you could do worse. On a personal level, it's a yes from me, but as a professional who wants a career, it's going to be a no.

You’ll have to be weary of other potential contact with diseases like HIV, because you’ll be picking up needles daily,  and come into contact with bed bugs frequently.










Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is one of the largest BIZs in the country. They work hard to serve the diverse needs of those who live, work, and play in Downtown Winnipeg. I worked on summer research projects and got good experience bouncing ideas off my manager and coworkers. Some days I'd be calling folks in other regions to learn from their expertise as solving problems and other days I'd be planting flowers in our city planters. Great dynamic place to work.
