DST Consulting Engineers

Assisted with pursuing contracts, whereby we won 1 and carried it through to completion.  Mid management backed me up when there were difficulties, but management was short sighted on viewing the long term benefits of working on business development while under pressure to bring them in before my contract expired.  Unfortunately, my contract finished before the work of my business development paid off months later.  Working on contracts with DST Consulting Engineers was, therefore, challenging and unproductive in the long term.

Most of the issues at DST are due to a lack of sufficient number of staff. Theres just too much work. Everyone is overworked and stressed out. Worker safety is an absolute joke. There's been some scary bad injuries to staff. They constantly ask you to work evenings and weekends. Pay is ok to start but the raises aren't even equal to inflation. The quality of deliverables is poor because there aren't enough people to do everything  properly. Tons of turnover in staff. Most people leave for better opportunities or more money elsewhere. That's why they call DST the farm team or B League of the consulting world in Ottawa.  

 

High turnover, low pay rate, disorganized and no respect. If you want to be over worked, disrespected and ignored by Management...this is the place for you!  Otherwise, you're better off elsewhere.  
No matter how well you do your job, even if you go above and beyond, if there is a mistake and it is not even your mistake, don't worry, they will find a way to blame you.  You will be reprimanded and you will be fired.  They will fire you for no valid reason and have the audacity to look you in the eye and lie to you.

Everyone is very stressed and long hours. Different project managers gives different directions. Very poor management.  Stressful culture. They try to make you work more hours and dont give you the credit for it. Very bad mentoring . Not at all great if you want a good work-life balance. Never looked forward to work. They would cut off your hours to make profit from projects

Overall, a terrible company to work for. They don’t respect their employees and overwork them like animals. Upper management and leadership team are sneaky and don’t care about you or your well being. No matter how hard you work or how much you’ve accomplished for the company, they will never value you as an employee. Extremely cheap and filled with deceitful individuals especially their leadership management team. 

Don’t waste your time and avoid working there.

Management never had a clear picture of what the goals of a project were and planning was last minute. Being told youre going away for 3 weeks the day before is a bit hectic.
Pay was okay only because of the overtime.
Only work here if you are desperate for a job.
This is an engineering firm ran by geologists who have no idea what they are doing.

I work for DST over 3 years. Great place for learning but less opportunity to put into place for all the experience obtained from previous years. Medium company size, great staffs, nice workplace. Cross-training available.

Combination of field and office work.

Short deadlines for material testing. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Focus on the company and individual experience while employed.

If you do field work, you can expect to take your life in your hands. I quit because the job was unsafe and nobody cared when I raised my concerns. I was treated like garbage by clients, homeowners and by the engineers. Technicians aren't valued and are treated as though they're disposable.
