Being part of the Occasional Pool allows you to learn aspects of many different jobs, depending on your background and experience. Contracts can be as short as two weeks or last more than a year. Some departments are better to work in than others, but you move around a lot so there's a lot of opportunity to find a job you like. It is possible to work as an Occasional employee for years, but because of union rules, it can be very hard to move into a permanent position. Most of my people I knew who did were in the occasional pool for two to three (or more) years. Some people like that flexibility, but if you are looking for a permanent, full time job, it can be tough to get in.

The staff is huge, but most departments are small, but if you move around a lot it can be hard to form connections. There are more than 10,000 staff and students, so there is never a dull moment. There is always something happening on campus. 

Work/life balance is pretty good, depending on where you work. The college is connected to Place Alexis-Nihon, so there are plenty of easily accessible lunch options. It's located near Atwater Metro, several bus lanes, and the Maisonneuve bike path. 

Working at Dawson College is a fulfilling journey, marked by a vibrant community and a profound dedication to education. The four-star rating stems from my genuine affection for the supportive atmosphere that permeates the campus. The collegiality among colleagues fosters an enriching work environment, making each day a collaborative and inspiring experience.

My passion for contributing to education is a driving force behind my commitment to Dawson College. The institution’s commitment to academic excellence aligns with my personal values, reinforcing my sense of purpose. However, the challenge of career advancement stands as a notable aspect of my journey. While the desire to climb the professional ladder persists, the path upward appears challenging. Despite this, the intrinsic rewards of contributing to education and being part of a tight-knit community make Dawson College a workplace where my enthusiasm thrives, creating a balance that fuels my dedication and satisfaction.

I was pushed out because i dared to contact the union after being replaced by a friend of management. I didn't even make a complaint, just asked a question! Management is completely corrupt, union is weak and has no fight in them.

It can be a fun place to work and you are paid pretty well. It can get frustrating because there is definitely a do as little work as possible  and CYA attitude from management. A minority of staff is like this as well and they tend to be friends of management. 

In sum: work there if you have an opportunity and don't have something better (money is still good and its not all bad, it can be a fun and rewarding experience). Do not bother going the extra mile, you will feel really stupid about it later (as I did). Keep looking for other opportunities while you're there - do not commit to them in ANY way.

As a note-taker at my own Cegep I had the ability to balance school and work in such a way that it was not stressful for me as a student. Each semester I was assigned to one or more students who could not take there own notes for personal reasons or educational deficiencies, and I was required to make the notes understandable and sufficient in order for the students to be able to pass their classes. Often I attended the classes with the students so the hardest part of the job was if they had a very early class and the most enjoyable part of the job was establishing bonds with these students. I learned how to be organized and fast at taking notes by computer or by hand.

Hardest part of the job - having to refuse students admission, or tell them they lack the grades or prerequisites for their desired university program... or having to explain to a student that they've been expelled.

The most enjoyable part of the job -- helping to launch young people on their path to become doctors, artists, teachers, lawyers, engineers... Also helping a student to see the options available to them when they are in a program to which they feel unsuited -- and watching the relief cross their features.

-being ponctual is very necessary  
-co-workers need to be mature, and must learn about the tasks, always help other co-workers if necessary 
-hardest part of the job was when a few members would not show up so finishing the work on time would end a little later than usual 
-the most fun part of the job was everything, the great and friendly environment, the teamwork, the staff, and the job was not too hard

Employees were encouraged to continue with their professional and personal development. Family obligations were recognized and accepted. Though, as with any other company, some parts were not great, I would give a high mark as a place of employment. I was able to move around in different departments, experience different types of work, and was encouraged to grow.

You pay for your RREGOP contribution (10% of salary) no match it done. Union fees for all jobs. You pay full group insurance nothing paid by the college. Different rules for different departments for taking days off, vacation Overtime expected and not paid. Others task in job descriptions means they can give you any kind of extra work. Managers that expect too much. No proper training for job. Everyone afraid to complain and grieve as they find way to get rid of you! 

It was a simple student job that allowed me to make a little bit of money in my free time. It also allowed to help others and to continue learning in a way a classroom can not teach. It was a good job in good environment, the employers were very nice and always there to help with any issues. Although you are being paid, it is not a job you do for money, the pay is minimum and not always consistent since it relies on how many times you meet with a tutee.

I guest lecture in a course about world religions and rituals. Sonya Zylberberg is the professor introducing her course on ritual practices of varying religious traditions. I teach the one class on Wicca and its ritual practices.

Teaching as a guest lecturer means being concise and yet providing enough material to be considered meaty without being overwhelming. The challenge to to give enough information and make it both dynamic and interesting.
