I loved my job and the environment I worked in. Customers and Coworkers were an absolute pleasure to work with.Every work day involved helping clients find creative solutions and products/gift ideas to take home and enjoy and share with others.I learned that our store played a huge part in helping people achieve their dreams as artists. Our assistant manager should have been head management in the store; a fantastic fun personable person who treated all his employees with respect; unfortunately I am not able to say the same for head management who demeaned and at times humiliated staff in front of coworkers and customers.The hardest part of my job were days when I worked with head management. Most enjoyable part of my job was the people I helped and seeing how excited they were to buy their art supplies. They absolutely loved our store and the pride we took in providing exceptional customer service.I have never worked at a job I enjoyed more.

The culture at Deserres is "the customer before everything". If you're about to cure cancer, but a customer needs to know where to find a certain pencil; you need to stop what you're doing and help them. 

You need patience to work at Deserres. Customers will be rude sometimes and you need to try to keep positive and go on with your day helping other customers.

Apart from your main job: customer service, you do stocking. Often times you'll run out of space in over-stock and you'll have to find space and do some problem-solving. Same applies when you are putting products on shelves.

All-in-all, I do recommend working here. You'll get well treated as an employee and the team is great, which really makes you feel like you're a part of something.

Work starts in the afternoon, roughly at the time of my typical afternoon class start. Responsibilities consists of stocking up items onto shelves and help out customer service. The main thing that I learned in my time there is how a typical retail shop works from the perspective of a co-op student. The workplace's culture is oriented in arts & crafts seeing as the customers of the store are (or planning to be) workers of the Art Industry and hobbyists of the visual arts. The one thing I would describe as the most difficult part of the job is handling customer service, the reason being is my lack of knowledge on the items the store sells. The biggest highlight in my time as a co-op student in Deserres is discovering wonderful items sold in the store and finding more respect for retail stores and it's workers.

I haven't been working here long, but the vibe I got from when I started till now is that it's a happy place, where we're treated like adults (not micromanaged) and treated nicely and fairly. Both my bosses and supervisors are friendly, welcoming and inviting people who will listen to any concerns and provide great feedback on problems.

They give great hours and flexibility with scheduling. My only problem is minimum wage, but that's to be expected with a cashier position.

I would 100% recommend this workplace to anyone looking for a job.

I worked under a line of stressed managers stressing each other out. This trickled down to myself and my colleagues, we did our best to stay positive despite it. I felt we were pressured to keep up morale while taking unrealistic expectations and undue scoldings from those above us. It is generally a cool place to work despite the management (regional and store). The clientele and my fellow workers always made the days enjoyable, and I can honestly say I've created friendships thanks to this workplace.

My time at Deserres was good, and I would have likely stayed on for another year or two if my store hadn't closed. I don't care personally for the upper-level management, but all of my coworkers were great and I got along well with everyone. It's great if you're a student or a young person who wants to balance work and art school since the schedules were always really flexible and I got free/cheap art supplies a lot. However, if you're looking for full-time work or you have large payments, the salary probably won't cut it and if you level up to middle management you can get a ton of work dumped on you that's not worth the pay bump. I had a good enough time overall.

Work at DeSerres is fun and all the managers are easy-going and seem to hire people that are likewise. There is good communication between managers and sales associates and everyone gets along well and there are no rifts between managers or other employees. I really liked how they allow every employee to do everything. You learn to use the tills as soon as you start, and they allow you to do merchandising, stock, and many other skills so that every employee has a comprehensive knowledge of the store and how it works. It's an enjoyable place to come to, and I never dread going in to work.

A typical work day would consist of serving customers, merchandising end caps, maintaining zoned areas, setting up flyer sale displays and signage.
I learned a lot of product line in the Art Supply & Craft Industry.  
I didn't care for the management style.  Non-communicative and unsupportive.
Co-workers were creative.
The hardest part of the job was the management style.
The enjoyable part of the job was learning something new everyday about the art supply & craft industry and being surrounded by talented and creative people.

I learned the differences between the brands of paints they had. There is a difference of pigmented colours in the variety of brands. Some colours (depending on the brand) are more pigmented than others. The environment of the workplace is very positive and upbeat. The hardest part of the job would when you have to be constantly standing and moving. The most enjoyable part of the job is when you greet customers and they have questions about products they should buy to create their products.

Has amazing employee discounts, and if you're an artist, many other percs! Typically you will engage in meaningful interactions with customers because they share their creative project ideas with you or their fine art techniques, and it betters you as a creative thinker and artist as well. Occasionally you get to sample new products, which is exciting, and perform tutorials/demonstrations on how to use new products.
