Department of Canadian Heritage

Like other large corporations, corporate values and standards ON PAPER are perfect -- too perfect actually, and therefore almost impossible to enforce and too easy to manipulate by the many imperfect people in charge (and not in charge).  Management has its own behavioral quirks and interactions which, to an extent, affect the whole system.

That being said, there's always ample opportunity for continued learning and upgrading of skills.  Change is constant, that's a way of life and participation on various committees is encouraged.  You'll never be bored, that's for sure. The salary and benefits are outstanding, you won't find better anywhere.

The most enjoyable part of the job was planning promotional events for my own culture (francophone), as this was a passion of mine.  This was highly encouraged -- while still doing my "real" full-time, very busy job though.

The hardest part was the living with the absolutely inflexible corporate sub-culture of workers who clawed, harassed and back-stabbed their way to a place where they could manipulate their little environment to make themselves look great while doing very little and decimated anyone who made them look bad by working hard.

I began working here as part of the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP). After I graduated I was employed full time as a Program Officer where I administered a province-wide program handling grants and contributions. This gave me tremendous confidence in my abilities to work with various levels of clientele and management - something I had yet to fully experience. The culture and environment was one of the best aspects; no matter how challenging certain tasks or days could be, my co-workers always knew how to put the right perspective on things. The hardest part of the job was when last minute changes would occur and it felt like we had to essentially re-do the work with minor changes that were not quite justified - this made meeting tight deadlines an even more challenging task. I was laid off due to budget cuts, however I would be estatic to join the PCH team again!

All in all, when started working for International Relations, I was not very familiar with our policies and guidelines with respect to our co-production agreements with foreign countries as well as our day to day relations with the Embassies. Did not realize how closely we are associated with our partner department of Foreign Affairs

As a Capital Heritage Interpreter the typical day at work was enjoyable and not stressful, but still consistently busy. 

The workplace culture was very friendly, inclusive, and everyone seemed to get along well. Management is responsible for fostering a workplace culture of hard-work and team comradery. 


The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with the public on a daily basis and having the opportunity to work outside.

I was on assignment at the Canadian Heritage for nine months.

During that time, I learned a lot about the issue of Work/Life Balance because this the project on which I worked.

I was treated with respect and professionalism.

Unfortunately during the time that I worked at the Department of Canadian Heritage, morale was quite low, due to a hiring freeze and recent lay-offs. Sub-directorates did not communicate often with one another, which created additional tension within the regional office.

It is an honor to work with the team of the Ontario Region, Department of Canadian Heritage.  
The only problem is the commute to and from work, as I live in Mississauga and the office is in Downtown Toronto.

Canadian Heritage allows to develop a career in the government promoting what it means being Canadian. I learned about grant administration, collaboration on events, and promoting indigenous culture within Canada.

Good experience within a Government Environment though my contract was for only 9 months was able to learn a lot and prepare myself for future Government positions

A strong group of people who are at the readybto do their best. Good team discussions intended to always see what can be done to improve processes for, and interactions with clients.
