Discount Car and Truck Rentals

A typical day at work
-Making sure I print off list of cars that need to be clean on the days I get help
-Every customer get a clean rental
-Do a lot of stuff on the computer
-Open and Close agreements
-Clean rentals
-Pick and Drop off customers
-Answer phone calls
-Deal with customers all day long/make sure they get rentals on time
-Make reservations/when reservations come in making sure they are called to confirm there rental
-Always putting in notes on rental agreements
-Doing updates and making sure they don't go over there rental max/making sure payment is taken if they extend there rental
-Walk around the rental to see if there is any damages
-Took care of everything at front desk
What I Learned
-When I first started this job I was shy to talk to customers and I learned how to communicate with others. I'm more open with customers when I give them a ride home or pick them up and also talk to them over the phone. Most customers when they come in are very stressed due to they have just been into an accident and I always try to make them happy and stress free when they get a rental

-My co-workers are very nice, I'm the only one that works for Discount and I have a helper to clean cars on certain days. I'm located in a bodyshop so I'm able to get help from other and I help them out when they need it
The hardest part of the job 
-I'm the only one that works at the front desk and sometimes the customers come in all at once and I help them out as fast as I can and they are always understanding due to they know I work here alone.  I always keep calm but sometimes it does it a lot for me to do it on my own
The most enjoyable part of the job
-Everyone gets along and the bodyshop includes me in the things they do. They celebrate everyone's birthday and have lunch. If the bodyshop does very good for the month they take the office workers out for dinner

My time at Discount was some of the hardest working I've ever done. I worked 75-80 hour weeks for 5 weeks straight until they hired more people to fill up the schedule. I was promised raises and promotions(at the time the store did not have a proper manager and I was working beside the district head). I was told that if I worked hard that I could become the new manager of the location. A job I was well suited for having been a manager in the past and applying with that in mind. I got none of that.

The company management do nothing but lie to you. Promise you things to get you to work harder then not follow through. 

I reorganized that entire location, I trained all the new personel that came to work for us. I was with them for 3 days shy of 6 months(the end of the probation period) then they let me go in the middle of a shift with no warning. I was supposed to get a raise after 3 months... that never came. 

When new management did come to the store I decided to try and make the best of it and work hard. There are other locations after all. This new manager made me out to be a useless employee that did nothing but screw up, all so he could look like he was doing the work that I had done. He would issue new policies that I would warn him would upset the customer base. I would do as asked though. Then the customers would get upset and he would come out and act like I wasn't doing exactly as he told me to do that morning. 

Everyone in this company lied to me and used me. They are the type of company that will step on its employees. I could not recommend more to stay away from these people.

I worked here for about 10 months. But only because I had to. 

The company just has a terrible system in place. Basically they will take reservations from anybody, for anything, at anytime. BUT, and this is a huge but - there's no guarantee they actually have a car/truck to fulfill the reservation. 

So we used to get unhappy customers shout/scream/curse at us all the time because of this. It made working there so stressful and I literally hated working on the weekends when there are no branch managers working, so nobody would be able to help us if the company messed up. 

I literally have google reviews written about me by angry customers, naming me on google because I didn't have a truck for them when they had made a reservation for it a month before their big move. I literally had no control over it. 

The schedule was terrible as well - with very little control over any off days. Basically worked open to close 5x a week - about 7am-7pm. Had no life outside of work. 

Employees quit left and right - sometimes they'd hire like 2-3 new people inside a month, and within 3 months they'd all be gone. Manager literally didn't care. 

Only reason I gave 2 stars out of 5 is because at the bare minimum they pay you on time and for the amount that you work. They are professional on that issue, and I think that's at least something to be proud of.

Across the board, this company expects executive functioning levels of staff while paying minimum wage for most positions. As examples:
-Customer Service Representatives are expected to perform as a combination of outside sales managers and hotel front reception staff at minimum wage. 
-Managers are told they MUST work between 48 and 55 hours a week which puts them at around the $17.50 to 18.50 / hour mark (no overtime pay). This is the payscale of a mall retail supervisor. 
Go be a mall retail supervisor. It will be less frustrating because at least you won't have to directly answer for much and will actually have products to sell. Which is the other fun part of this job. Discount doesn't make money renting cars. They make it through the buying and selling of cars. Sort of like a used car dealership. So they don't care at all if they yank your entire fleet out from underneath you an hour before you are supposed to start renting it and without a backup plan to offer you. They do it all the time, in fact. So good luck with managing the customer service and business to business sales nightmare that this causes you. And make no mistake,  you'll be expected to manage it somehow and 100% on your own.

If working with a prehistoric systems is your thing you will love it at Discount.  They are sooo far behind the times its not even funny.  Yes a top notch team of "Managers" created a committee to make improvements to their out of date software so that you could do your job effectively many many years ago and..... 

Most if not all problems are due to the lack of procedures and not having a proper system to do your job effectively on. The office culture is ok because there really is a lot of great people there and the CEO is also awesome but is that enough reason to stay at a job when all of your day-to-day functions are just one problem after another?

“Some” of managers can be downright mean and if you aren’t to their liking they will make your job a living H E double hockey sticks. They love to gossip to other employees in very inappropriate manners and they do not take responsibility for their mistakes and turn a blind eye to their “pets” shortcomings also.  They could also use some compassion training and learn what confidentiality means.  These select managers are also the Social committee which is NON social!  What kind of social committee does not allow employees other than their "selected" Managers to join?

I began working cleaning cars for minimum wage which was fine for me at the time because of the level of enjoyment compared to the workload. The guaranteed 44 hours was a bonus for someone like me looking to make money. However everything changed when the counter position at my store left leaving me to fill his role. It has now been almost 5 months and the promotion I was promised over 3 months ago has still not come. They pressure you about your sales and your punctuality with lure of your 'pending' promotion because those are the apparent requirements for promotion. Worst part is that I'm actually good at the job so my manager has started taking advantage of the fact and now leaves the branch as often as he can. Tomorrow he is actually taking his car during work hours to have his brake pads and rotors replaced. Stay away from discount.

PS We get free lunches on long weekends but we got capped due to the employee I replaced and even though they are long gone the 20$ cap still remains. This company, just like most of their employees, doesn't care about anything.

Working at Discount is always a fun adventure, whether it's driving around to pick up cars and customers or doing work in the office, there is never a dull moment.

A typical day consists of ensure there are enough cars to cover reservations and walk in, to handling any customer issues. I am always making sure that the customer is completely satisfied with their rental experience. 

I also handle any unpaid invoices, which consists of researching why the invoice is unpaid and who should be paying it, i.e. insurance company, body shop or customer and collecting payment accordingly. 

Another responsibility of mine is to ensure that the location runs as smoothly as possible, ensuring the location is properly staffed, delegating duties to individuals based on their strengths. 

Overall, I take care of most administrative duties as well as managerial duties. Anything from refunds to creating the schedule.

overall, my coworkers were awesome. the manger didn't know how to manage and the DM was so unfriendly and treated staff/ team members like numbers. like he was some type of big shot... we work very hard but the pay isn't worth it. I didn't know that we had to clean cars until my first day of work. it was not mentioned in the interview or job description. the management was so unorganized you sometimes feel lost and clueless as to what to do next. 
the work environment was dirty and unorganized
the uniforms are the worst to wear in the summer and if you don't wear them you get into trouble. but if you do, while working outside with no air condition in the bay, you are sweating pools. 
good luck to anyone who gets the job, don't overwork, and do not plan to stay for long.  my team members were pretty cool so Im sticking around for a bit but its a drag going to work.

At the time the management from the top down treated the staff at a couple of the locations I worked at like we were expendable. No opportunity to actually own the job.

At the branch location, there were a lot of kids fresh out of university working for the first time at management level. The company's reputation suffered because of this culture. Customers frustrated because product that they ordered wasn't available or ready when needed.

Every branch had a click(ish) feel to it. There was no team approach or the ability to make newcomers (and a lot of new folks came and left) feel like their contributions are appreciated. 

The last shift that I was called to do and turned down was to a location that was an hour across the city (each way) for a three hour shift. I would of netted $10.00 after fuel expenses. Not worth it

Discount is a great place to work and learn. However the Management is not very professional and the wage is not what I was told it would be. You don't make enough money for what your job entails. Also even though you are told that you will be off at 530, you actually don't leave until well after 6pm. I found that during the hiring process, they leave a lot of major details out, so be prepared for some major surprises when your first day comes. 
All this said, however, the staff at the local branch is outstanding and a really awesome group of people to be around. And if you are able to get past the wage and inconsistencies between the interview/hiring process and the actual job, its a great place and a pretty awesome job. 
I learned a lot about myself, gained a whole bunch of new skills, and possibly figured out where  I want my career path to go.
