Throughout my time at Discovery College, I've felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. The opportunity to contribute to such meaningful work has been truly humbling. Whether it's assisting students in their academic pursuits or collaborating with passionate colleagues, every moment has been infused with a sense of purpose.

Moreover, the supportive environment at Discovery Community College fosters growth not only for students but also for staff members. The dedication to professional development and the encouragement to pursue excellence has been instrumental in my own personal and professional growth.

In sum, working at Discovery Community College has been nothing short of remarkable. It's a place where lives are transformed, aspirations are realized, and dreams take flight. I feel deeply privileged to have been part of this incredible journey, and I eagerly look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

I worked at DCC for just shy of a year. In that time, I had watched numerous people quit or go on medical leaves to never return or be seen again. 
There have been instances of unethical behaviours from not only some staff members, but from the very top. 
Lacks transparency with staff, students and potential students.
Lots of passive aggressive attitudes from management and the immense pressure to fill seats for the classes falls on to almost everyone. 
Disorganization best sums up this business. The company culture and values seem to just be around putting a dollar in the head honchos pocket.
 The job description can be changed on a dime, and is inconsistent. Half the time, I was asking “what is this persons job?”. Somedays, I was even wondering what my job entailed as I was assisting to two or three other roles. Because titles will change…over..and over… and over. Home-life balance is really lacking as the “some Saturdays” turns into random late evening shifts that you are required to contribute in. 
Not really any benefits offered. 
The pay was decent, but I still was working a second job in the evenings to fill the gaps. 

Now for the good.. I got an opportunity to participate in some fun creative projects, being able to help students make advancements in their academic careers and to share the experience with some really great people and had plenty of laughs, despite the chaos. Campus is an alright location although safety can be a concern. 


The work environment at Discovery Community College is high-pressure and emotionally draining. Expectations are set by senior leadership and passed down through management, creating a consistently stressful atmosphere. Goals are unrealistic, and staff are expected to meet them with limited training, minimal support, and little clear direction.

Communication is disorganized, with priorities and expectations changing frequently. Employees are often left confused while still being held accountable for outcomes. There is a strong emphasis on enrollment numbers and performance metrics, which makes many staff feel undervalued and replaceable.

There is significant pressure to meet enrollment targets, including encouragement to present programs in ways that feel incomplete or misleading. This creates ethical concerns and adds to daily stress, particularly for employees who value transparency and integrity.

Management is highly controlling, yet meaningful support is lacking. Workloads are excessive, work-life balance is nearly nonexistent, and burnout is common. Staff turnover is high, as many employees leave to protect their mental health.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I want to be honest - there is nothing. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being expected to deliver quality education while dealing with constantly changing expectations, poor communication, and zero real support. No benefits in terms of RRSPs, Dental Vision anything. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As an instructor, Discovery Community College is one of the most poorly managed and exhausting places I’ve worked. Leadership is completely disconnected, expectations constantly change, and instructors receive little to no training or support while being held responsible for unrealistic outcomes. Communication is disorganized, and micromanagement is constant.

There are no meaningful benefits, no job security, and instructors are treated as disposable—termination can happen at any time. The focus is on enrollment and numbers rather than quality education, often creating ethical concerns. Burnout is inevitable, turnover is high, and this is not a place to build a sustainable teaching career.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It looks like stressful and unpredictable.

Love working for DCC. It's very rewording to watch the students grow and gain hands on skills. The wage is competitive to an LPNs job. Management is supportive and if you have concerns they work with you.

I have to say something about some of these past reviews. I have seen some instructors not be very profesional. Letting students leave hours early, leaving classrooms messy, smoking with students, and even complaining about the college to students. I know a few of these instructors have been let go and now across the island and on the mainland we have a fantastic team of instructors. My guess is that the negative comments may have been written by some of these unprofessional instructors. DCC has zero tolerance for unprofessionalism from its instructors. This makes me proud to be part of their team! 

We do not push students though the program. We work with students to help them if they need it. Most students pass my classes and are job ready. There have been students that I believe not ready and management has supported me with either recommending more clinical time or even (a rare case) of a different career path. 

All-in-all a great place to work

Worked here for a few years in an admin/managerial role and it was constant stress and anxiety. Extremely high turn over. Upper management who micromanage while not providing enough support for people to learn the rather complex and constantly changing role(s). Inability to leave the job at home as you are always getting some phone call or text message or another. The only decent part was the pay, but after they brought a new HR director on that changed and they will gaslight you about why you don’t deserve a COL increase. 

I’m sad that I dedicated so much of my time and energy to this place and wish I had left sooner. Finding a new job where I  treated with respect really puts into perspective how toxic the culture was. 

We also went through 2-3 “restructuring” events in the last year or 2 I was there during which employees roles were changed around over and over and most staff never even got to see the new “structure”. 

Please do yourself a favour and find a job somewhere else. There are lots.  

In my role as instructor, I prepare to facilitate in the classroom for the supportive care in class discussion and support students with their learning.
The management is supportive and values open communication. 
The workplace culture is purpose- driven, with strong teamwork and shared commitment to helping others. Since the teaching is online, one of the hardest parts of my job is spending almost eight hours in front of a computer with only a thirty-minute lunch break.  Balancing multiple responsibilities at the same time can also be challenging.
Seeing students grow and succeed is the most rewarding part of my work, especially in-class room course, the Supportive Care.

The workplace environment is heavily affected by internal politics, which can be quite difficult to navigate. Employees often find themselves forced into these dynamics and, at times, used as scapegoats when management errors occur. This creates a situation where one must constantly advocate for themselves, even when the issues are beyond their control.

While they often speak about supporting employee growth and development, the reality rarely aligns with those expectations. There is little genuine advocacy or opportunity for advancement; only favouritism that undermines fairness and morale.

If you're seeking a supportive work environment, this may not be the right fit. The most rewarding aspect of the job was working with colleagues and the students, who made the experience meaningful despite the challenges.

I've been with the college for many years,  they've been fantastic.  Supportive of personal & professional goals. Constant growth and expansion. I love being a part of a team that provides accessible education for careers with the students learning environments in mind. I've written everything from entry level to management hats and always felt supported and treated fairly.  This one small college continues to expand and offers a variety of programs to meet the training needs of the employers in the communities we serve. 

Qualified instructors, quick to adapt,  and always looking for how to keep curriculum and processes relevant.

Looking forward to being a part of the journey for more students and continuing to be a part of this incredible team for many more years. 

I was sent a job offer promising a job teaching in this college with a good chance for advancement.
I was offered 25-40 hrs per week. 
Orientation to the job was watch this, now just teach what is on the curriculum, only the curriculum was not there on time or inadequate.
I was promised to be paid for lunches when I took on full time classes, and never was. 
So I worked 4 hrs at one campus, and had to be at another campus 15 minutes away to teach another 4 hour class with no travel time, so had to either leave early or be late, with no time for breaks, travel or lunch. 
The curriculum was at best an outline, with so many holes in it and errors that it was impossible to do a good job. I found it embarrassing to tell the students that we had no curriculum again and again, and having to wing it and find things to fill their days with.
