Its a good part-time gig but don't expect much in the way of advancement opportunity or working up to full time hours. Your job also depends much on the quality and work ethic of co-workers as management expects significant production on a daily basis and if others aren't pulling their weight it reflects badly on the team as a whole. This seems to be the normal way of things. But if retail is a career avenue you want to pursue long term, I don't see why someone couldn't eventually make it to the top with this company however you will have to relocate for any plausible opportunity to be had

i learned to be more social during my time working at dollar general. working there showed me how to better solve problems with customers and has made more of a social person since working there. by being a cashier and talking and getting to know the customers and help them with their basic needs has helped me grow more as an employee and a person in general.

Management
In general, managers at Dollar General are very tired

I worked for dollar general I loved working there because of the people that you get to know but they had there favorite people you could really never advance they didnt let anyone but management work day hours they underpaid you an made you work the front an do stock if the stock wasn't put up they would write you up even though you hardly got to leave the register and you can never get over 20 hours per week

You get low pay and low raises. You can hardly get enough hours to live off of. You do more work than pay. The manager is rude to customer and the district manager do not do anything about the manager. The open door policy is full do not work. Stores need security due to high theft in the stores.

Management lacks integrity, promotes favorites, encourages nepotism.

Management only looks at production numbers not the people.

Will write an employee up for mistakes while management makes a mistake they get a pass.

Will hire from outside for management positions with no experience rather than promote within for open positions.

Hired as store manager, 0 training from DG, I must write up everyone all the time. They keep everyone in a state of fear of being fired, I have yet to meet one actually happy employee. Churn and burn is their philosophy. People do not matter, shareholders matter.

They talk a good game. About standing behind you in training.  Room for advancement and so on. But at the same time you're just thrown in there to do the job done. Without much help or training. You're trained with the mentality of corporate retail thinkorswim.

-Management doesn't care about you as an individual
-No Accountability for people to complete their work within set timeframes
-Innovation is frowned upon

Good work life balance in my current position however, management's often lack of experience in the remodel scope of operations can cause frustrations in the day to day completion of tasks
