A Typical Day at Work:
A typical day at Dollar Tree as a Store Manager was chaotic and overwhelming. With only one cashier and one acting manager on shift, I juggled cashiering, stocking, and operational tasks simultaneously. The constant rush—described by employees online as “hurry hurry hurry”—left little room for quality customer service or team support. Understaffing made every day feel like a race against impossible expectations, compromising safety and efficiency.

What I Believe I Learned:
I gained resilience and multitasking skills under pressure, but these came at a high cost. The experience taught me how critical clear communication, fair hiring, and adequate staffing are to a functional workplace—none of which Dollar Tree prioritized. I also learned to recognize the importance of supportive leadership, something sorely lacking here.

Management:
Management was disconnected and unresponsive. Senior leaders issued demands without seeking input or offering support, creating an isolating environment. Feedback was ignored, and there was no avenue for meaningful dialogue. This one-way communication made it difficult to address store-level challenges effectively.

Workplace Culture:
The culture was undermined by favoritism and nepotism. Hiring often favored internal referrals over merit, creating cliques and stifling diversity. This led to unfair career progression and low morale. HR was not a neutral resource; concerns about safety or unfair treatment were dismissed, leaving employees feeling undervalued and unheard.

The Hardest Part of the Job:
The hardest part was managing an understaffed store while meeting unrealistic expectations. With minimal hours allocated, I was forced to handle multiple roles simultaneously, leading to burnout. The lack of support from HR and upper management, combined with favoritism, made it impossible to maintain standards or foster a positive team environment.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:
The most enjoyable part was working with my team and building camaraderie despite the challenges. Helping customers and seeing small wins, like a well-stocked shelf, provided fleeting moments of satisfaction. However, these were overshadowed by systemic issues that drained any real joy from the role.

Summary
Dollar Tree offers basic retail management experience, but it comes with significant drawbacks. The company’s reliance on internal hiring, disconnected leadership, biased HR, and inadequate staffing creates a stressful, unfair environment. Benefits are minimal—only managers receive costly, low-coverage insurance, while frontline staff get none. Online reviews on Glassdoor (2.5/5 for Compensation & Benefits) and Reddit echo the burnout and lack of recognition I experienced. If you value fairness, support, or work-life balance, this is not the place to find it. I suggest Dollar Tree improve by prioritizing transparent hiring, two-way communication with leadership, and better staffing to reduce employee strain.

I worked for this company for about 3 years. While I was working here I was working on my Bsc Degree as well so I worked part time. I expected to get part time hours, however every week I was given extra hours to work which I can't complain about. I have no complete and accurate review for my immediate managers because corporate recycles their employees, especially management every few months so I don't think this is a good place for job security. 

As for upward mobility you start off as being a store clerk (which means you pretty much do everything from stocking products, to recovery, being a cashier, cleaning the bathrooms and at times even unloading the truck.) If you show them strong work ethic and you have the availability, after a few months they will try to promote you to assistant manager. That is the highest that you would be able to get to, unless you establish a good relationship with the district manager. Then there is a possibility of you being able to become a store manager.

Since every store is different there is not much I can say about the job culture. In one location they were very lenient with employees, while in others they were strict. What I liked about this job is that it was straight to the point. If you have the morning shift/ midday shift, you punch in open up your till (cash register), and stock products until you get customers on your register, you do this for the entirety of your shift unless your told otherwise. If you have the evening shift, you open up your till, and recover or try to recover the store. You do this until the store closes. if it is a truck day, and they need an extra pair of hands they will ask you to go to the back and help unload the truck. 

If you are lazy and just expect to work the bare minimal you will not be able to last long here. Since it is a dollar store there is a large flow of customers that come in everyday. That pretty much means that the store is a mess at the end of the day. Recovery of the store at the end of the day usually means that you make sure that nothing is on the floor. I was told this by all of the managers that I worked with. In the 3 years that I worked there, I must have had more than 10.

The only time management was really strict on recovery was when someone from corporate was coming to the store. When that was the occasion the recovery had to be better than just adequate. The employees are then instructed to recover the store and restrooms properly. This would take longer so proper hours are given to the employees to accomplish this task.

Understaffing as a Strategy
At the store where I worked, understaffing was intentionally used as a strategy, forcing employees to manage the workload of two people. This approach aimed to extract maximum effort from employees. The manager, who struggled with fluent English, was egotistical, vindictive, and never admitted fault. Attempting to explain why things happened a certain way often led to having your hours cut without warning or explanation. Coworkers were hesitant to support each other due to fear of losing their jobs.
Daily Routine and Tasks
A typical day began with logging in and receiving task assignments. Day shifts primarily involved stocking, while evening shifts focused on recovering and cleaning the store.
Learnings
I observed a constant influx of international students seeking employment, making everyone easily replaceable without notice. However, if you were on good terms with management, there was an opportunity to learn a bit about inventory management.
Management and Work Culture
Management was terrible, with no emphasis on process improvement. Shelves were overstocked as a policy, causing items to tumble out. We were instructed to force products onto shelves, ensuring that once a carton was opened, its contents had to be stocked, with nothing returning to storage. This led to significant product damage, but the company and manager seemed indifferent. Employees operated independently, and at the end of a shift, boxes and tools were left wherever they were used, as it was the evening shift's responsibility to clean up. The manager showed no interest in checking or improving these practices. While the work culture among associates was generally positive, it was negatively influenced by the store manager's attitudes.
Challenges and Opportunities
The most challenging aspect of the job was the stress of completing tasks within limited timeframes. It seemed that both the manager and the company were aware of this and deliberately pushed employees to their limits. On the positive side, securing this job was relatively easy, as the interview process was minimal; speaking English was the primary requirement for being hired.

The more you do the less you get recognized they have favourites who they promote while the ones showing they are working there but off gets less hrs . 4 hours a week is not enough to live off even to pay 1 bill . If you give the store your own time you don’t even het a thank you management is two faced and will talk behind your back the store is dirty and a cleaner may come in 1 time a year they have 2 ppl work at a time which can be stressful when you are expected to be in 2 places at 1 time they hire more ppl give less hrs when workers there already can’t get hours they want shifts are usually 4-5 hoursyounheybreallt nice customers and really impatient customers it comes with customer service all stores say they can’t get anyone to work but don’t give enough hrs they promote who they want they check bags after each shift to make sure workers are not stealing this job is fun and teaches good skills however it’s hard to make a living here with the hrs they give .everyone acts like a family but some talk behind your back and tell what you say to others . This job is not a job to make a living off unless you are a manager that’s the only time you get full time hrs the associates are per time 4-20 hrs a week and you won’t get 20 hrs unless you are a favourite or they need to fill shifts the interview process is easy the uniform is simple black pants and a green shirt you have to supply your own uniform they want a green collared shirt which can be hard to locate staff gets first pick at items that come in which is good when certain items come in don’t expect to do extra work or bust your butt to get ahead because they pick favorites and will promote someone who just started over someone who has worked and came in for every shift and more for years the store can be cut throat but it can also be a great experience like any other job it has it good moments and it’s not so nice moment 

A typical day would be to cash out every customer, put away anything customers leave behind in their designated aisles, clean around the registers by sweeping, changing the garbage, and by picking anything up that was left around the cash station. It is also my duty to clean the front seasonal area and the front end-caps to make sure it looks presentable when customers walk in. 

I learned to be more patient when it comes to customers who might need extra help with what they are looking for, I learned to be more confident when it comes to approaching customers or management and I learned great people skills in which I will continue to keep with me. 

When I first started at Dollar Tree I was very happy with management because everyone made friends with each other so it was very comforting. Although as time went on and new management came in, it became a little difficult to get used to so many changes as there was a point where management would change every 3 weeks. It still has been difficult to adapt to because it is different, but it is something I will get used to.

The workplace culture is great because the customers and my coworkers make it that way. Everyone is incredibly kind and I have made friends with them. I love that everyone I work with is very reliable and have positive attitudes because it makes the work environment a great place to be. 

After working at Dollar Tree for over a year, nothing has been difficult for me. All I found difficult was trying to learn how to work the register when I first started working there, but that was picked up quite quickly. Overall it's not a difficult job which makes it enjoyable. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to meet so many different people and being able to help the customers that come to the store. It is rewarding when I am able to help someone in anyway and working a retail job has been great for that reason.

I worked at a location in Port Coquitlam and this was the absolute best place I have ever worked at. The store manager is such a lovely person and very understanding. She provides very detailed training for everyone in the store. 
I felt so comfortable there and within my role.
My regular day would be to open the store with a cashier, drop the deposit at the bank across the street and assign tasks for the day, then work on stock for mostly the remainder of my day while I help out the cashier or cover breaks.
There wasn't too much pressure to put stock out which made it seem like a less overwhelming task.
Some weeks were struggles as we didn't get many hours but would get large truck deliveries.
On truck day we would start at 6.30am before the store even opened but with multiple people this was an easy enough task.
I got to work with people of different ages as the day time cashier were middle aged or older and the closing cashiers were students.
I was encouraged by the store manager to start the process of training for store manager and I completed all the online learning modules.
This particular location had a wonderful work environment and I didn't hear bad things about the surrounding cities. If I hadn't moved, I most likely would have spent a long time at this job.
The company was able to transfer me to a new location (Red Deer) where the environment sadly was a complete turn around from what I was used to and I ended up quitting.

Cashier job with simple tasks and friendly customers. 
I worked at the cash register and performed appointed duties between customers, which had to be completed before the end of my shift. Those duties often included cleaning aisles, sweeping, cleaning the windows, filling balloons, organizing and returning things out of place. Completing all the tasks can sometimes prove difficult at times because of how busy it can get, and when there is lots of customers you must stay close to the register. Never really more than one cashier to help take the load off. Fast paced during the day and holidays. 
Schedules are posted only 1 week in advance, so its hard to make plans around your work schedule, as any days off must be requested 2 weeks prior. No electronic schedule posting, one must check the posting while at work, and they don't like you calling in to ask about your hours. Also, when you call in sick you must find your own replacement for your shift.
My co workers were nice and were a good team, always willing to work together and share the workload. The managers can be hard to work with as they tend to have little patience and are not very approachable.Very picky about policy though they don't always follow it themselves. 
Overall it was an easy job if you need the money, the only things that were a downside were the managers and some of the company policies were ridiculous.

Dollar Tree needs more training in customer service with most employees. No family members should be allowed working together because they get away with everything without consequences. Complaints are not handled properly. Dollar Tree needs to up the pay for Managers and Assistant Managers and proper training. Good employees were forced out of the company by Management. Some employees worked at a great store in Vegreville Alberta Canada and are NOT doing there jobs or have family working there or lack of training or receive NO consequences. There are to many kids are being hired that can't do the job or don't want to do the job or stealing but they just want the paycheck that's it. If I was Management their would be a lot more training to be done and if they couldn't do the job they wouldn't be working. I had my own company and my staff members had respected for me and others just like I had for them. I had worked for Dollar almost 7 and got NO appreciation or respect from Management. Dollar Tree should have more incentives for people that work hard. Reviews should be done every 6 months and i could go on and on and on but this is how I feel. Things just need to change at Dollar Tree 🌳 oh yes cashier and sales Associate should never have the same pay or hours...or Managers and Assistant Managers have the same pay... just saying the pay for everyone should be different by a least a buck or two but never the same 

Working at Dollar Tree is about putting product out on the floor as fast as you can, they want it done there way or its the highway, the management about store managers have no empathy and do not care what you think, being out in the rural area does not help as product sometimes took a while to get due to bad transport company and what excuse they came up with to not deliver, the company expects you to work 47 hrs. or more and you do not get paid for working more than that, my advise is to hold management accountable and work your minimum hours required as you do not get compensated for that.  The company does not care about its products and lets shoplifters do what they want and when it comes to inventory they wonder why the numbers are so high, so do something about it. If you work there as a regular employee your safe but think very hard about applying for the managers positions as you have a lot of work to do and your work home life does not exist. The job is very repetitive and can be very draining on your mental health, so think very hard before you take a salary position with Dollar Tree. 

Show up, do what you can in the time allotted. With no form of teamwork that flows in a 12hrs the store is open. Picking up after the day shifts leave you a pile of work that could  have been taken care and expected to complete the daily stocking required amount of work done throughout the day and clean entire store with 2 people while servicing customers , repeatedly called for some task required by your only other employee on the shift or tracking something down for customers Working shift in the most minimal of hrs that are handed out and forced to fly out the doors only minutes after locking the doors after letting out the last  customer when store has closed.  Only to do it all over again with constant questioning and expectations that leads to you having to justify every single step in your working hours for incompleteness where you could also choose to pick at the incompleteness of the whole entire place. You choose not to, for it just falls on deaf ears.
