I've always heard critical things about working under the Training Group and some of them were true. People LOVE what they DO (see the Douglas College motto I put there?) but the staff are overworked, micro-managed and seems highly competitive, especially those who are at management level. You know what - not everyone wants to be in management because some staff love working with clients more. However, teamwork, trust and relationship building need to actually work together to have a good and positive working environment. Clients sense and observe those things. I expected working for a college that they would have these fundamental principles when it comes to creating a healthy team - I was sorely disappointed. It makes me question whether I should stay here for the long haul. My tip for management - read The 5 Languages of Workplace Appreciation. This will change your staff and team for the better. Since you're an educational institution that inspires learning, I highly recommend you all read it. DO inspire PLEASE.

Working with a group of 28 kids ranging in different age groups had its own challenges but it was a great experience being able to run activities with them in the gym and in the computer lab.

I instructed (with 2 other students) the sports and computers camp so we got to work in the computer lab teaching the kids how to use Word and Powerpoint. We also got to work on our typing skills, and learn a bit of introductory coding for website design.  Then we would have some down time in the gym or we would go outside and play kick ball or run some basketball games so all the kids can be included and get some physical activity. 

Management is really trusting in their instructors to come up and run different activities so that made it a lot of fun for us from different sport backgrounds to pool our ideas together to come up with some really fun games.

Worked at Douglas for a year now. I feel like my ideas are truly heard and like I really make a difference in my role. I get to help new students adapt to college life through campus tours and orientation events. Management in Student Life is lovely and will go out of their way to help you if you need it. One of my managers left recently and we still text occasionally as friends to check in. It's a varied role of answering emails, leading tours, running games/activity nights on zoom and in-person, and creating new ideas for getting students involved on campus. The variety helps keep things interesting.

Working as a Student assistant for 4 semesters, was an amazing experience. The staff at Douglas are kind and encouraging to not only their students, but their TA's as well. 

The only flaw is that you work varying hours, so you can either get a lot of work 10+ hour/week out of a max of 20, or very little 
(around 4).

If I had to give an opinion, the most difficult part of the job, would be tending to issues that are very uncommon, and may not have anything to do with the course itself, 

for example a student's computer experiencing technical problems related to the way the school has it set up is not within your control.

"Mummified" here means DC Training Group have no feeling for their staff.  All they care about are their stats for the funder.  I was going through one of the hardest times of my life and they showed zero sympathy.  I do not recommend working here, unless you don't care about working in an environment where staff are forced to be plastic and numb.  This experience working here will follow me for years, and somehow, for my own good, I need to let it go.  Better for you not to get into this situation, if you care about your own mental health. 

Colleagues and co workers are great .
Administratively there is no formal orientation program for new faculty or mentorship. Most faculty work in isolation.

There is inconsistent messaging from management at times regarding what can and can't be done by faculty members. Some staff allowed to take vacation outside of  summer time ( during a semester while others are not ) 

Non transparency of work assignments for faculty / seniority lists not posted 

Health Sciences dept lacking in policy / procedures and protocols much of which you need to search through Dept meeting minutes to find.

Working here was like time traveling to 1952. They talk a big game about respect and a collegial workplace, but in action they are clinging to oppressive and largely offensive practices. Sexism, disability-shaming, and bullying of those who speak out are rampant in many departments. I’ve seen managers outright lie to keep complainants quiet. It’s disgusting, and it’s 100% why they can’t keep skilled staff. 

To top things off, they have the lowest salary of comparable colleges in the province, and their technology is sadly lacking. It took the pandemic to get them to allow any offsite access to employees.

Worked in a high functioning team with trust and support among colleagues and the supervisor. Required a good knowledge of using pc/mobile/online technology. 
The greatest satisfaction came from the success of the clients. Some might not have achieved the ultimate goals but you could still see the improvements and how they overcame the challenges along the way. 

Usually, the volunteer starts at 9:30, but I have to be there at 8:30 to set up the place. My colleagues are very friendly and they are willing to help new people like me to adapt to the environment. The hardest part of the job is to show students places at school since I am not really familiar with all the rooms on the campus yet. Still, my teammates support me a lot. The most enjoyable part of this is that I get to know a lot of people, talking to them in English does help me improve my English skill a lot. I can also learn about many diverse cultures, too.

I am always laughing and having fun while working as it's a great atmosphere to be in. My co-workers and managers are fun. The hardest part of the job is not having enough people to keep customer service fast and accurate,sometimes when people don't come in,we work as we are 2 people. The most enjoyable part of my job is how everyone greets each other in when you start your shift and keep laughing and working together to keep giving the customers and company the service they need.
