Dovercourt Recreation Centre

Dovercourt Recreation Centre is a fantastic place to work. A typical day would consist of coming into work and preparing for the after school program, which entails setting up each room with the designated activities that are going to be taking place, and then once the children arrive you take them outside to play until it's time for a "group split" which means this is when the kids get to choose what rooms they would like to go to and then a program leader and one or two counsellors and junior counsellors supervise the room and play with the children. 

I learned a lot not only about myself, but a lot about how kids react to different people and different scenarios. For an example; some kids warmed up to some program leaders better then others. Typically if you were warm and welcoming they would feel comfortable approaching you whether it was to say hello or if they had an issue they needed to discuss with you. 

The management team at Dovercourt is phenomenal, they were very flexible with scheduling but were stern when they needed to be. They are a group of extremely nice individuals who genuinely care about their employees and the guests and children that attend the facility. 

The hardest part about the job is trying to get the children to listen to you when you're trying to help them solve a conflict. There is always two sides to every story so you needed to take that into consideration. Most of the children would cry and say the other is lying, leaving us thinking that it's going to be impossible to help resolve the conflict. At the end of the day, it was easier with more experience and once you got on a name to name basis with everyone because you could make it more personable and the children would be more understanding. 

The most enjoyable part of my job would be getting to meet all the kids and being able to have a bond with them. Everyday the kids will come and greet you by name with a huge smile on their faces, and that has to be one of the best feelings.

I worked for Dovercourt Recreation Centre for a summer and have nothing but good things to say about the organization. The management were friendly and helpful, and most staff were responsible and enthusiastic about their jobs/roles. The summer camps provide a great outlet for bored school kids and their programming was flexible in accommodating children with mental and physical handicaps. The staff handled all parents and children with professionalism and I would recommend Dovercourt as both an employer and community organization.

Was good work experience working with children at different age levels, a lot of wonderful and cherished staff who really cared about the programs running and the kids. Though there were positives, this turned out to be a pretty predatory workspace being a teenage girl between the ages of 13-16 a lot of the older staff members namely a lot of the male directors who were substantially older, some in their 20s were extremely creepy towards me and other female workers. Very sad that a community space was filled with some people like this. 

It was a nice place to work at but things were disappointing and unorganized.  They gave low pays for those who were working a week of 35 hours of 130 while some counsellors were paid hourly getting more than others. There were also no breaks you had to ask for them 

This place lets you realize all those community projects you were dreaming of running. IF you want to organize a recurrent class or a one time workshop, this is a place to rent the studio space from

Teaching requires you to program your classes before they occur, however you will only be paid for the time you are teaching which is less than 5 hours a week. Lots of extra work with no pay. The work environment and people is great though.

The environment is very friendly. Managers and coordinators are very understanding and appreciative. People here will give you the opportunity to be able to give to your full potential and be the best version of yourself.

overall great experience, very rewarding and staff were kind and friendly and always willing to help out others. Management was young and under qualified.

Dovercourt Recreation Centre is a wonderful place to work. The work atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. The staff members are also very nice and willing to help wherever needed.

My experience as a staff member before I had to leave, Dovercourt Recreation Centre was amazing with the atmosphere and the staff being friendly and My boss was very easy-going and helpful.
