Downtown Mission

The Downtown Mission is a great place to work, if you are just starting out in the work force or re-entering the work force after an extended period of time away. It can give you some skills that maybe you were lacking in your old job and some new tools to help when looking for a new position somewhere else. I have really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to anyone that is looking to gain knowledge and skill in a relaxed environment. My co-workers are a fun bunch and they are quick to help if you are behind on an assignment. As am I there to help if needed by anyone else.

The Mission is trying to do great things. They still have a long way to go but it is going in the right direction. There needs to be some more balance and additional leadership and team work added to certain areas so that the higher ups can concentrate what is necessary while they can have a strong staff to lead them in the day to day ensuring staff is trained, happy and safe. 

Overall it is a work in progress as they grow and establish more programs to help our community.

At the downtown mission your skill set will grow with each encounter you have with the population served. Lots of room for advancement and opportunity to make a difference in the lives of persons who are experiencing poverty and or homelessness. Great entry level job if you are looking for experience after completion of a relevant post secondary educational program.

Weekend shifts in the Downtown Mission Kitchen begin at 7:00 am. The morning shift is from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. The responsibilties include: cooking breakfast, lunch (a portion of meat, starch, hot vegetable, salad, dessert and soup for an average of 160 people) and finally a pot of soup for the evening soup kitchen. This job is only made possible by the commitment of the volunteers.

This job taught me tolerance as I was dealing with the homeless, poor, drug or alcohol addicted, and people in crisis. I continued to volunteer for another year after the position in security ended. Really enjoyed my co-workers and the clients. Made life-long friends there.

Work starts early and is typically fast paced but the overall servant leadership role every other person is willing to offer the next person makes working at downtown mission a pleasant place to work. The people are ready to welcome and help new employees settle on time .Good environment to work.

My volunteer position as a prep cook at the Downtown Mission makes me excited for Mondays! Such a rewarding feeling to be able to give back to my community.

Staff is very nice, they go above and beyond for the guests. Security goes out of their way to make sure you feel safe and secure. If you ever are going through a hard time in life. They are there for you.

My experience at Downtown Mission was memorable. I've learned better customer service and my social skills has improved drastically. This job has also helped with time management and my organizational skills.
