If you're looking to build your resume for law enforcement, corrections or boarder services, you'll want to start here. No other security job around will allow you to build your character, apply de-escalation tactics, provide emergency first aid, build strong networks and meet some amazing people along the way. I feel so proud to have been apart of such an amazing team at the Downtown Mission. Management goes out of their way to support the team anyway they can as it can be a difficult job sometimes. You will learn how to talk to people experiencing crisis and build up your skills around decision-making. I'm sad I had to leave for a new position. Thank you DTM family!! 

Going to work there was very rewarding and I helped every homeless individual that I possibly could was kind of compassionate towards the guests situations, listening to guest well drug addictions, seeking and assisting detox for our guests, some good laughs with staff that were the enjoyable ones to work with. At times it could be stressful it was fast pace and times it was slow. Myself under staff had many times save people's lives when they came to coming overdose. I was very proud to be able to help people although I'm not proud to have such gossipy staff who are jealous of your hard work to have to start rumors and things behind your back be careful of that otherwise it's a good place to work for

When I first started it was great and rewarding. About 2yrs in things changed, the executive director was a poor leader, they hired management without any management training, gave promotions to anyone without posting job, allowed guests to speak rudely to us.  Very toxic environment and it always seemed it was a fight between floor staff and kitchen staff.

Controlling my emotions while facing with vulnerable people

All the employees work for one mission: helping people 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Research and communicate with employees

Close friends and family in management which makes it hard to trust them.  The director of services is very nice cut backs in janitor staff and added to other areas of jobs made the job even more stressful.  The security was good until they got fired and new security came in from east India and felt as if they did not protect the staff as they should of been.

This place has bad contractors...the maintenance and janitors they are completely unprofessional and mischievous. They do shady work.
I don't think anybody checks on these people who work as janitors if they did, they’d find out,
In that place and they are not held accountable for mismanaging the building.


You will find good companies with great people, work is easy to perform, doing all a schedule work with a specific timeline and you done, no supervision most of the time need it.

The Downtown Mission works very hard to continuously have an intake of food donations as well as their soup kitchen. As a volunteer and a school intern while working alongside the supervisor goals for helping the less fortunate were acheived as necessary.

The clients are amazing and the work you do is incredible. I truly love my job. However, the pay is rough. You aren’t celebrated for your achievements or work. The work environment is quite toxic between coworkers 

Wages are low in all areas.  Job is rewarding but unable to work there long term due to cost of living.
Because the turn over is so high due to poor salary many employees have to over extend themselves.
Co-employees are good people.
