Dr Bishop and Associates

Overall my experience at Dr Bishop and Associates wasn't bad ( because I was liked ) but they definitely need to work on some things. It is a good place to start off and get trained if you want to work in the industry because they are always hiring experience not needed ( turn over is terrible ). At lease one person quits every 2 - 3 months. Overall the pay was just cutting it considering how much they worked you, 9 hour days that are jam packed with patients. No raises unless you did the tiny assessments which was never possible because managers were always busy, each assessment would boost your pay by 10-20 cents. If you aren't able to work in a fast pace environment I would not recommend getting a job here as they are having patients in and out of the clinic within 15-25 minutes and would see up 60 patients a day. Management was pretty bad ... you would get shifts assigned to you 1-2 days before hand and were expected to come in even though you weren't orginally working that day. Schedules came out for the whole month in a week advance but there wasn't one month I was there and there wasn't 15 changes or more to it. You got 2 days off 2 random days in the week, example = Sunday and Thursday. They don't pay biweekly they pay monthly which sucks!!! I'm unsure why they do it this way because everyone agreed that it sucked. You are 100% expected to work at all 4 locations when needed and won't get gas money for the trip. They would call you an hour before your shift to tell you another location needed someone to cover. Managers do pick favourites and if you aren't one your work life will be harder and way more stressful. Workplace culture basically sucks unless you were one of the few that were liked by senior staff. Time off had to be taken 3 months in advance lol. You have to have thick skin to work at Dr Bishop and Associates or you will fall through the cracks. 

A typical day at work was working the front desk for half of the day as a receptionist which consisted of: taking calls, talking to patience, booking appointments, selling inventory, re-booking patience, completing heir daily eye exam paperwork and answering questions. 
The second half of the day consisted of doing eye examinations on patience. Completing all of the basic eye exams needed per client accurately, which took about 30 minutes per patient. Also dealing with patience interested in contact lenses putting in and taking out lenses as well as providing information and lessons. 

I learned many things about our eyes.  I learned how to properly take eye exams of many types.  I learned about contact lenses. I learned about bookkeeping, I learned how to properly file take and put files away. I learned how to make and book appointments.  

Management was always wonderful, until the last person got hired she was very strict and unfriendly.  This person was hired before I decided to leave to return to Cape Breton. I did work with her for a few months.  
The management before her was great! Very helpful, friendly, organized and understanding. Dr. Bishop himself was a wonderful man to work for.  He was very friendly, understanding and helpful.  He offered wonderful incentives and great learning exercises.  He was very involved and it was nice to see.

My co-workers were very professional and friendly. I formed some great relationships out of working with this company.

The hardest part of my job was never having a low time it was a very busy industry always moving and working consistently. Never a dull moment. 

The most enjoyable part of my job was seeing the patience, I loved interacting with all of the different, unique and diverse people every day.

The turnover is absolutely insane and that was a red flag. No one lasts more than three months. They keep pushing you to sell products to patients and they are overpriced compared to other places. It broke my heart that we were encouraged to do that. This place is good for training to get experience in this field but that it is. All this company cares about is the money. They claim to care about the patients when that clearly is not true because every single morning meeting we have is about how much money we can make off of our patients. They also reuse equipment that SHOULD BE THROWN AWAY AFTER FIRST USE. But they tell us it's expensive and we need to use them. It was the worst. Most of the employees also love to boss others around, including managers (they are on a literal power trip) and the entire work environment is so incredibly toxic and ALL locations are like that. 

They also don't give you over time, they bank your hours instead because it is cheaper for the company. Other optometrist clinics give you overtime, go there instead. They make you work 9 hours with only a 30 minutes break and the work that you do is NOT worth only $17 an hour. You are a receptionist, an optical technician, and a janitor. It is atrocious how low they paid us. 

If you are thinking of working here, don’t. You can get experience from a much better place. 

Know your worth!!

No experience? No problem! They teach you intensively in one week (shout out to the person who trained me). Working here would give you opportunities to work in other places. My suggestion is to get as much experience here and then leave.

I was lucky to have great colleagues, I wouldn’t have survived without them. Opticians and most especially the doctors were great but I’m not sure the owner really knows how to manage his clinics. It felt like a numbers game; traffic meant more than retaining current patients. The need to do recalls (book appointments) everyday was insane. You get patients emailing or calling you back to not ever contact them again. 

Store manager seemed like they were in a constant state of pressure and stress. I don’t know how higher management communicates with the people who help run their clinics but it’s clearly atrocious when your boss comes in stressed everyday. Like a domino effect, the stress and pressure was placed on all of us. 

Store management did the best they could but it wasn’t enough when everyone felt unappreciated and overworked. The pay wasn’t worth it to stay in this company.

This job takes a certain type of person to work full time here. The company seems to put more focus on streamlining the training process than keeping its staff for long term.
WARNING: HIGH TURNOVER

When I first started with the company I was very excited to learn and start in a field that I never anticipated myself to be in. The training was very well done in an out of office setting prior to dealing hands on with patients and you learnt A LOT. But once you actually started in the office everything changed. I myself fit in well with most of the girls in the office, but there was LOTS of drama and people treated others very poorly and management did nothing about it because they were friends with the staff, they could not put aside friendships to be a manager. This made tensions in the office very hard to deal with and very uncomfortable. Management in all offices were very intimidating and rude. I would come home each day exhausted from the work load as well as dealing with the drama and unprofessional setting.
Pre Testing, checking in and checking out was all done by a script that you had to learn. The pay wage was very low for the amount work and knowledge you were expected to know and do in such a short amount of time working there.
You were expected to be able to work out of all 3 locations spread out around the city, and you would be told at last minute notice where you needed to be, even if you were already headed to another office, but not expected to be late.
Overall, Difficult place to work because of these factors. But i appreciate everything I did learn about optometry in my short stay.

I`ve worked as both admin assistant and optometric assistant positions with Dr. Bishop & Associates, I am thoroughly impressed with the training they provide and has helped me with confidence in doing the job and helping patient either in person or over the phone. My duties included, inbound, outbound calls, booking appts, pretesting patients, checking in and checking out.  The company is a high volume optometric clinic so I`ve always been kept super busy which is a position that I strive in. Time goes by quick! Management and co-workers are all great people and I have gotten along with everyone quite nicely. The company will do team building events which is a great way to keep in touch with everyone throughout the company. The hardest part of the job is getting all your tasks done within your 8 hour shift but I feel like this is my own time management issue. I would recommend this place for anyone who likes to be kept busy and who has a passion for helping patients. You learn so much and I've grown a lot because of this job.

The focus on sales often overshadowed patient needs, resulting in the pressure to persuade patients to opt for high-end products, even when they may not be necessary. Furthermore, not all optical staff were licensed; some were simply sales personnel trained by experienced staff to conduct sensitive measurements for high-end products, potentially compromising patient benefits. The compensation often did not reflect the demands of the job, leading to feelings of being underpaid. The constant pressure to push sales created a stressful work environment, where ethical concerns were ever-present. Long hours exacerbated the stress, and slow days often meant extended, unpaid lunch breaks or repeated patient recalls, adding to the strain.


Great place for students looking to pursue a career in optometry, not a place to work for in the long-term. Office hours are long and not flexible. Will need open availability and must work on weekends and holidays. Management needs work, employee morale is low and bullying can be seen/experienced at all locations. Little opportunity to grow and corporate politics have become entrenched in office culture. I would recommend it as a part-time job as the workload is very heavy. Work conditions are so severe staff experience psychological effects of depression and anxiety. There's a lot of opportunities to learn about new products, procedures, and the latest technology directly from reps and doctors.

I worked here very briefly a few summers ago. They ship you back and forth between their various locations throughout the city with little notice. There was no support for staff when they were moved to a location they weren't familiar with - just told to "hurry up" with all the pre testing on half broken equipment with patients who barely spoke English and couldn't follow instructions, slowing the process down even further.

The employees were constantly turning on each other and throwing each other under the bus because of poor workplace culture, and you weren't allowed to leave your shift until you spam called forty people a day. 

For the long hours and low pay, this is not worth the stress. Find yourself something else. I did not stay past my probation, I'd come home utterly exhausted each day and feeling completely defeated.

I enjoyed all the on site training at this clinic. There was always something new to learn which made my workday exciting and interesting.  You first learn how to use different equipment to perform preliminary testing on patients and once you are comfortable with that you are trained on receptionist tasks such as checking insurances and completing paperwork when the Doctor is done with the patient. My co-workers were always friendly, polite and always helped me when needed (including Doctors and Management). The clinic is quite busy which can be tricky to deal with at first, but once I was comfortable it made the day go by really fast! A few times I won little prizes like gift cards and hockey tickets from inside promotions and competitions which made me feel like an important member of the team.
