Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board

During my time working as a camp counsellor for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, my ability to cooperate and work effectively as a group increased as those were the main requirements I had to fill daily. The workplace environment was filled with positive energy and encouragement from my coworkers as we worked together to create the best day possible for the children we were working with. My coworkers and I were divided into partners or trios, and assigned a group of around 10-15 kids that we were responsible for for that day. We created activities, monitored their behaviour, engaged in stimulating and education presentations and seminars, and accompanied the children on field trips to places such as the Ripley's Aquarium, farms, and African Lion Safari. The biggest difficulty I encountered during my time working as a counsellor was arbitrating and mediating conflicts that arose between the children. However, I was able to successfully work through it which has resulted in sharpening my skills associated with conflict-resolving.

Typical day from 8am to 4pm  Monday through Friday, working at the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board would consist of checking in with head department manager. Continuing my day with errands to the mail room to deliver and sort out Trustee mail. Making important phone calls to students, churches, and getting in contact with other department assistants for events taking place within the building. 
One major task was to create an organized and easy file for all media related archives: electronic and hard copy photography. 
Co-workers were extremely helpful and polite. I learned many responsibilities of the Trustee and Chairman workers, as well as the work needed to stand at such a high level.   
Lastly the most enjoyable part of the job was speaking with all different types of department leaders who take on different jobs also attending some of the meetings they part take in for experience.

Worked for the International Department. Taught Spanish in a multi-cultural environment. Taught students about Spanish language, culture and their heritage. Responsible for teaching pronunciation, grammar, composition and sentence construction. Besides the communicative method, other language teaching methods were used, audio lingual method, the direct method, the natural method and the acculturation method in order to meet the specific requirements of each student. Provided guidance to students on conversational as well as in writing Spanish. Responsible for developing the lesson plans, the teaching materials, the class preparation, the testing, and the report cards. Organized cultural events in which students had the opportunity to communicate and share their culture and customs in Spanish through music, dancing, poetry, food etc. Interactive, fun activities were part of the curriculum.

I worked as a supply Educational Resource Worker, which is what this board titles EAs. I had lots of supply work, but contract/LTO opportunities are very few and far in between. Lots of people leave because of the very few LTO opportunities and go work for other boards. I left because I was offered a job in what I went to school for, and that work pays a lot more. 

In regards to the work itself, you are treated like a second class citizen. teachers leave you all alone with special needs students because they do not want to deal with them. they will also refuse to help or guide you when a difficult situation arises (mostly in elementary schools). 

I prefered to work in the high school programs. all the staff there are so with it in regards to the needs and support of their students.

Management people seems like on a vacation since pandemic and never returned.
It is flooded with the dirty politics and worse management. There is no respect and appreciation of employees for their talent,skills,hardwork and honesty at work. Board doesn't care about the employees at all.
They don't belive on the fair system for people to get positions instead they find people basis on friendship and relation basis if they have worked with them already and not from the fair chance of interview or skillset/knowledge basis. Even on the managerial positions are like that.
If there is a Guinness world record for the worst management at an organization or worst place to work then DPCDSB can be on a 1st number undoubtedly.

Very good place to work as I work independently by myself. In charge 
for the operation of all mechanical equipments. I learned how to inter act with all the personnels from the principal, vice principals, teachers and to the students. Also coordinate with all tradesmen including all contractors doing all jobs in the building.
In charge for the operation and maintenance of all equipments necessary to run the building like Chillers, Boilers, Pumps Cooling Towers Air Handling Units, Exhaust Fans BAS and more. Also capable of doing mosy plumbing jobs, electrical carpentry ,etc.

I enjoyed the overall experience of my 32 years with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.  Working with students is a challenging and enjoyable experience.  The interaction with these young children in the secondary school is very rewarding and every day their is a new experience, moment and can really make your day and you leave with a smile knowing that maybe you made someone's day.  Dealing with the public is also challenging as they do not see their child in the same eyes as you do.  So you have to enlighten them on their child's strength and weaknesses and make suggestions on their well being.

Once you 'contract' with DPCDSB it's good. To get in as FT is tough and it's sometimes being in the right place at the right time. The Board is getting too big and has lost it's positive supportive of employee feeling. Feels like employees are just numbers. Too big now to be personalbe. Is loosing its 'Catholic' and religious reach-out to employees. it's what you make of it, but management v worker bees is very stressed and negative. If it was just about the students, it would be a good place to work, unfortunately DPCDSB is no longer about the students.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with children with developmental disabilities. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
A shortage of Educational Support Workers. We are forced to take on extra work, and the students suffer from getting little to no support. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is not diverse. There are qualified applicants for jobs that are being overlooked. Opportunity to grow within the company is limited. Better screening is needed. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Unpredictable due to staff shortage.

This job was the most exciting, rewarding job I have ever done. All the psychologists and staff members were so enjoyable to work with and such a friendly atmosphere. I felt like I was part of the team and I gained alot of knowledge in relation to working as an adminstrative assistant for the Psychology Dept. I was responsible for obtaining school records and medical reports for the psychologists for their meetings with themselves, parents and the Senior Child Youth Worker to discuss the student's progress and future recommendations.
