Durham College

Centre hours were 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. My shift was 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Responsibilities included relieving day shift staff, and remaining at the centre until all the children had left for the day. I served small snacks, supervised classroom and washroom routines, made phone calls to parents when necessary, provided fun and educational activities and tasks, locked up the centre at the end of the evening.

This was my first job out of college, so I learned how to speak to and play with children; I learned how to set up activities that promoted learning in a fun way; I learned how to speak professionally to other staff, as well as families; I learned how to approach heightened situations with a calm demeanor.

Management was great - door was always open, communication was always clear. Only complaint was there was no follow through with the late policy (extra fee).

Workplace culture was fun and professional. Encouraged creativity from the children as well as the staff.

Hardest part of the job was having to stay late, sometimes up to 30 minutes waiting for a parent, and then not receive the extra fee that was supposed to be charged.

Most enjoyable part of the job was working with the kids every day.

There are some duties that are consistent but what I love is meeting new students every year and new experiences, never a dull moment.

I get to create a positive,safe and motivating environment in my classroom.

Typical day  prepping work for the students with the   online learning system.

Teaching  3 hour classes

Facilitating  small group work  ( group psycho educational groups, life skills groups) 

Meeting one to one with student to provide academic and personal support for stress related issues such as anxiety, depression, family, health concerns.

I have learned to work as a leader  independently.

I am program coordinator so I also provide support to  approximately 11 faculty in  the program team with many part-time faculty.

The hardest part of the job  is  to cope with challenges beyond my control.  Schedules,  student unpreparedness.

 The most enjoyable is to motivate and support the success of the students. To see them graduate and to go on to university or to get that job in the field

What is the best part of working at the company?
Cleaning garbage from the students at the bins that was scattered everywhere the campus of the school premises and making tidy the perimeters therein.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When every site are in need badly to clean or the plastic bag needs to be replace since it’s full or almost overflow with the bags and the ground are so messy , usually on Monday after the weekend and the first day of classes and the students are so lazy to throw garbage into the container but just left stock at the door of the container bins.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment are collections of cleaners who doesn’t know what is clean and tidy mostly limited knowledge on health and safety and the concept of what is clean in fact and in reality.Smaller knowledge are very dangerous people.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
When we have a break of only 30 minutes.

As Web Marketing Assistant my responsibilities were varied and I LOVED IT that way. The job was fun. My coworkers were fantastic. The unfortunate part was that the job was a contract position, and funding for the position to continue was not approved when there was a switch in financial officers.

I ordered textbooks, helped students find books, helped with returns of books to publishers, kept the database updated, made changes on the store website, submitted social media postings to the communications department, made in-store signage, and helped with eCommerce shipping/support. If I were offered the same job or a similar one with Durham College, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

If the contract had continued and I'd been unionized, I'd have higher ratings for Job Security and Salary/Benefits.

Overall, I miss it. I miss it a lot.

A pleasant work experience to teach. Unbelievable amount of knowledge and resources to pull from. Other instructors were very supportive and extremely giving with their knowledge.
On a typical day we(38 students) would have a hour of theory, Class then split into two groups and we moved to the lad for two hours of Practical. 

I developed all my lessons, Power Points, and setup the lab work. From disassembling transmissions and engines to learning how to diagnose wiring issues in the automotive industry.

Every day was a pleasure to see the spark in the kids eyes when they learned a new task or scored well on a assignment. Getting to know about the students, their personal ideas and the passion they had for the trade.

Hardest part was learning to Colleges administration, but the management was more than helpful.

Get ready to mark papers etc. until about 12AM almost every night - actually scratch that.  Don't mark anything, just give everyone an A, because any student that doesn't get an A will complain to the Dean.  The Dean only cares about KPI's and keeping the little kids happy, which means that any low mark is your (the teacher's) fault.  

Don't even think about marking any international student a low grade because of poor English, incomprehensible sentences, obvious plagiarism or sub par work - it's your fault (the teacher's) for not being sensitive to the international student's needs.  Don't even think for a minute to grade them the same way that you grade a domestic student - if you did, you might fail half your class, and that would be a big hit on the KPI's,

Once again, just give everyone an A and you will be employed forever..

A typical day had me either sitting in the office working on imaging/updating school computers or running around and checking computer labs to ensure proper functionality on the machines. During my time at Durham College I learned a lot about computer repair, BIOS updates and changes, and the whole imaging process.

My co-workers were the best part of the job as we got along great and would constantly be joking around while we worked. The overall environment was fun, laid-back but also productive, and just great.

The hardest part of the job would have been just walking from one side of the campus to the other to check problems on a machine and then having to repeat the trip multiple times if the problem persisted.

The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing and talking to my co-workers as they really made the job so much fun for me.

I've been a successful corporate training/business instructor  for over a decade.  I've worked across Canada, online and in class and have really enjoyed designing and instructing training programs across all platforms for both large and small organizations in the public and private sectors.

The best part about what I do is I get to learn as much as I teach, which keeps me current, relevant and interesting as an Instructor.
What I love most is being able to facilitate an empowering learning experience where students/adult learners leave the session feeling excited and motivated to apply what they've learned.

As a Peer Tutor I would tutor individual students or a group in various subjects( Biology, Pharmacology, Psychology etc.). I worked with students who had different learning styles and who were in different programs.  What I learned from this job was to adapt to different learning styles and be able to communicate effectively.  I did not have a great deal of interaction with management but when I did they were extremely helpful and efficient. The hardest part of my job was helping really unorganized students or students who didn't come frequently enough.  The most enjoyable part of this job was the fact that it was on campus and the hours were flexible with my schedule.

Teaching is a great way to give back to the community and earn a living.  The problem is, our society has no respect for teachers and seems to think we can live on air.
As a part timer, there is NO job security, and even at partial load, that security is an illusion.  They just drop you down to part-time again to get rid of you.
The union tries, but because we just get legislated back to work, they have no teeth.  Ford even reversed one of the contract concessions we won after the last strike.  If the College Counsel does manage good faith, then the province doesn’t.
Don’t count on a college employer, they may even want to be fair, but they WILL let you down.
