FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMISSION OF ONTARIO

The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) is an arms length branch of the Ontario Ministry of Finance, regulating certain sectors of the financial services industry such as pension plans, mortgage brokers and auto insurance.

The opportunity to work within a public sector environment has it's benefits with regards to decent hours, work-life balance, competitive benefits and a fantastic pension plan.  However, the environment at FSCO is very frustrating to many young employees with aspirations of career advancement.  Too often management does not acknowledge skills and knowledge of staff or ambitions of employees who would like to advance within the organization into more challenging roles.  Educational advancement is rarely acknowledged as a benefit or a means to securing better employment opportunities.  Many career opportunities for staff come as a result of personal relationships between managers and employees as opposed to work-performance, educational advancement or skill/knowledge base.

I worked here during my co-op work term and had a decent experience. I met a lot of great people really working hard to make sure that they were working in the public's interest. The downside was that the work was really repetitive, there was a lot of down-time where there was nothing to do, and the management was really harsh in terms of not being supportive or encouraging.

A dynamic environment - I worked under the Strategic Planning and Business Excellence division so it was always exciting and busy. I had the chance to learn from very smart and caring individuals who have worked at FSCO for 20+ years.

I enjoyed the environment very much; always inclusive and friendly, I always felt good about going to work. The jobs themselves were easy enough, and there was enough of a variety that there was always something to do.

The excellent working place which is really interested in human resources development together its main business. My co-workers are helpful and co-operative and I never had problem with them. I had an opportunity to develop my skills while managing day to day operations in a time sensitive environment.

Variety of missions files, assigned to small team including technical evaluations and mentoring of staff.

Great work environment.  Fun place to work.  Job responsibilities provided enrichment in work life.  Was able to apply my skills and knowledge earned from previous work assignments

People were very supportive. Salary was great. Learning was excellent. Everyone was gracious. Learned lots of things. I wish I was able to stay longer.  I wish I could return there to work.

It is a great place to work, has a supportive management...there are many opportunities to grow. I Aldo found colleagues were friendly. They also allow staffs to work remotely. 

The team is the best team I have every worked in. The overall company is great as well. My work is flexible due to the nature of the job and I enjoy everyday.
