Four20 is a pretty easy place to work. You get to talk about weed and it's not a stressful environment at the store level. 
What makes it stressful is the lack of organization and good upper management. They will promise many things that will never happen. Examples include promising benefits 2 years ago but now refusing to provide them, offering stock options prematurely to employees and then having that fall through. Being hired for full time work, yet hours fluctuate - with no warning - between 20hrs to 38hrs a week. It's a great job to work if you only want to make a few hundred, have no desire to move up the ladder, and have perfect health - because you won't get benefits, and if you're sick, they don't have anyone to cover your shift. 
Stagnant wages are also an issue. No increases have been provided for inflation in over 2 years. Management will not approve time off unless you are a salaried employee, and therefore it is required by law. Even for major events, such as funerals, weddings, family emergencies etc. it is impossible to get coverage. This is because every store is extremely understaffed, and top heavy. There are often more managers than there are employees. The ratio is 2:1. Head office also employs far too many employees, having 5 or more in the office, yet won't hire enough staff to have more than 1 or 2 people in the store at one time. The people that work there are educated, qualified, and deserving of much more than what Four20 is offering.  
It has become evident that Four20 cares more about the bottom line than they care about retaining their employees. Many of the original staff members have been laid off, and many more have left due to corporate abuse and straight up exploitation. So much for a "premium market", as Four20 is quickly becoming a place of work similar to Walmart, where it is a revolving door of overworked, underpaid employees, who won't know what they're talking about, simply because Four20 is cheap. 

Just as the previous reviews have mentioned it’s very top heavy, and no room for growth, a lot of the higher ups come from the restaurant industry - no retail experience whatsoever, all they care about is keeping their doors open, they don’t care about their employees or the customers. 

If you’re not in management or head office you get treated as you’re subhuman, your ideas or feedback does not matter. The higher ups really love to boast themselves, they will boast on their educational training and while it’s cool they have a medical doctor on site, the training and presentations could have been executed A LOT better. But they are so unorganized with operations, store acquisitions, and properly training staff. Unless your a GM, your only job is to sell weed, communication is often withheld and no place for advancement with the company. 

Very unorganized and poor management from the top. They have no company culture, no workplace culture or team culture, it’s a very unprogressive atmosphere which doesn’t align with ending prohibition. They are too concerned with expanding but at the lowest cost possible, instead of internal promotions they just overwork their employees and don’t know how to delegate tasks properly. 

They are very cheap, they expect you to work alone and close late nights (2 am) alone. Everything they do in how they operate is about ‘profitability’ but at the expense of their employees. A lot of empty promises and no transparency whatsoever.  Essentially everyone is part time except for managers, but they will tell you it’s ‘full time’ because they expect their employees to travel to different stores in the city to pick up shifts and often last minute due to high turnover. 


I originally applied to work for this company as I wanted to further enhance my knowledge about the cannabis plant and its effects; improve my networking and my communication skills by meeting like-minded people in the industry.

That was not the case.

After my first interview, I was called to let me know that the "position has been filled" but then after a week or so, I get another call saying they can hire me for another (lower) position on a part time basis with the "chance" of a promotion. Being naive and craving knowledge, I agreed and started working for this company only to realize that nothing is as it seems. 
As other reviews have mentioned previously, the company has a very top-heavy management with only a handful of staff exercising control over *all* the stores (including ordering product, deciding what will be discounted, controlling stock and inventory, etc.) 
This created quite a restrictive control, and on top of that there are practically no real "benefits" to working here (vacation days are paid out if you aren't salaried, employee discount is frequently more expensive than the regular prices at competitor stores, etc.)

The expectations for performance are incredibly high and as a result, the turnover rate is just as shocking. Quite an unfortunate start for someone just looking to spread the culture and learn the benefits, but if you don't mind working alone and being paid minimal wages for what they expect from you, then I wish you good luck.

Unless you're buddy buddy with the management beforehand, you won't get far with this company. They consider themselves "retail", but just have restaurant experience, which is a red flag. On top of being "young", there's no experience with real work. It's a bunch of young restaurant managers eager to micromanage your every move.

The people you work with are OK. A lot of them are talking behind your back to management. Got any complaints? Save it for your pet/plant/gym when you get off. 

No benefits were had. Unless you're in salary mode, as a manager (see where that's going?) etc., you won't get any. 

Their favourite management/scare tactic is all the cameras they have. It's supposed to be for security/training, but there's always somebody watching you. Feel free to be creeped out. 

Zero to none work ethic. A quick Google and guess where their 5-star/recommendations are coming from. 

Bad company, terrible management, gross work environment and no real reasons to stay here. Other cannabis companies are popping up. Stay far away from the Apple business of the industry. Oh, you're paying more and they know it. But customers are "paying for the experience".

I worked for four20 for just over 1 year and upper management was so toxic. I was dangled the idea of promotion for the majority of my career at four20 with 0 see through. They promise career development but don’t help with anything, everything I learnt was self taught. The teaching programs they offer are a joke and mediocre training at best. Stressing the importance of sales over customer service, I can’t speak for current operations but they had a software system that made us check IDs for EVERY customer even if they were obviously 60+ (Even if your a supervisor or manager).

The new CEO was previously the CEO of liquor depot and couple other smaller companies, and it reflects deeply in the four20 marketing today. Do you like liquor flyers? Because that’s what four20 is pushing right now. And their absurd retail side of things. This is cannabis, not clothing.

The hand holding on the corporate level is ridiculous. They couldn’t even trust supervisors with a checklist without sending it to head office first.

If you want to grow your career in cannabis, you can start at four20 but they will stifle your development once you understand the industry.

Since I started with Four20, 5.5 months ago, I have had open communication with management, I have had my ideas heard and implemented, I have been promoted once and been recognized for my efforts. Management and peers give feedback and coaching skills. Plenty of educational materials and unlimited ability to ask anyone questions and get answers back. The ability to pick up shifts at other stores to supplement low hour work week. I have worked for many employers and I have had some good jobs and some bad jobs but Four20 has definitely shown me that there is positive work environment. If you want a place where you will be heard, where peers and management learn from one another and everyone holding one another accountable then this is a good place for you to work. It's relatively easy job but we all pull our weight to get things done. I go to work with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. 

The communication between management and staff is the worst I have ever experienced. All training of new employees is left up to the retail staff as management showed no interest at all. Any problems with your work is not communicated, so you are left thinking all is well. 
Manager relies on one employee to do all the necessary work leaving you with nothing to do but twiddle your thumbs until customers walk into store. The interview was very encouraging and made you feel good about being hired but once you started you saw the real story about the company and that story is very corporate, nothing like you are told during the hiring process. You are expected to know all the workings of the store within a very short training period. Manager does not know all procedures of the stores workings, (example: does not know closing procedures) and almost seemed annoyed when you called to ask something, then told to call another one of the sales people. There is definately a "walking on eggshells" atmosphere. 

Very easy place to work, I mean who isn't willing to talk to people about weed for hours on end. The biggest problem I had with this company was the hours, I cam gaurantee you its a great job if you want to make little money and have a good work life balance. The hours range from 2-9 hour shifts. I have seen my co workers kept on for months on end working only 2 hours once a week. Good luck getting full time hours here. Let alone getting enough money to pay your bills, I thought the $17.50 an hour was great when I first started. I then realized the extra $2.50 an hour doesn't mean anything when all you get is 20 hours a week. I have a co worker who's been trying to get a raise for nearly 7 months, a simple $1.00 raise, she is essentially the assistant manager, and very under appreciated for it. Either way, it was a super fun job the first couple of months, but after about 2 months it gets very very very boring, and it's hard to stay awake waiting for customers to even come in, especially considering how saturated the market is now a days 

I was quite looking forward to continuing my journey in Cannabis with this company. Things did not go as planned.

I had to call in sick and was treated very poorly by management. This included guilt tripping and gas lighting. It was like the world was going to fall apart because I was going to miss a shift.

They have no back up plan in place for people that need to call in because they are truly sick. You will have to find someone to cover your shift. This can be extremely difficult if you open the store. Not many people are available at 7:30 am leaving you with a feeling of not knowing what to do.

Due to me calling in one day, I was advised that I would have a sit down and "chit chat" about it. I was not impressed.

This company really needs back up plans rather than leaving it up the employee. 

four20 was a wonderful experience when I first started with the company over time. things drastically changed, they flaunt a very elegant  company culture but that is just for the eyes of the public. my experience after a while felt more aligned with greed than with elevating  standards. it feels like your doing things to make your manager look good in the eyes of the head office than doing things that actually make a difference. managers are super disorganized and  I agree that it is top heavy if you are not one of the favorites you are not considered. a very cold environment is the best words to sum it all up. it seems very welcoming but once you are in, you realize that it is all a pretty image that they have created and you unfortunately have fell for.
