The typical workday at FYI changes depending on position and location. 

Pretest: The day mostly consists of pre screening patients before they get into the room with the doctor. To do this you spend some time talking with patients and working through their list of problems and building a history as you run a series of tests on them. Most of this job involves having a guided conversation with patients and documenting symptoms, issues, and concerns. You get to use a variety of specialized instruments to achieve this.

Dispenser: A dispensers job involves basic reception work as well as assisting patients with finding glasses, glasses repair and adjustment, and measuring and ordering glasses.

Pretesting is what I can really speak on as that is what most of my days are spent doing. It involves a lot of baseline learning in order to get proficient at the job and your freedom in discission making varies based on which doctor you are working for and their level of trust with you. If you and the doctor who you work under are aligned in your goals and work together well the learning opportunities are endless and are used to further the efficiency of the clinic by better gathering the information needed by the doctor. A large part of the learning for this position is medical and social and a lot of it comes with time and exposure with the medical parts having learning opportunities supported by management.

Management is good and work with you on an individual level in order to assist you in building up your skills year over year. 

The enjoyment you get out of this job depends a lot on what you put into it. If you enjoy helping people and chatting with people from all walks of life this job will be rather enjoyable as a substantial part of it involves talking with others and putting together what their individual needs are.



There were some coworkers I loved working with, but the practice coach was absolutely terrible and so was 1 doctor.
Practice coach had her favorites that would get whatever they wanted, but others would have to try to prove themselves to her. She would show up late or not show up at all with no warning, would be late because she was getting her hair or lashes done, she would talk badly about certain patients nonstop if they complained about her. Like I'm pretty sure I was the only one there getting minimum wage because the PC didnt like me, even tho I was one of the only people jumping to take CRT trainings (only 2 of us and the PC did them), helped her with coding for our accounts, and basically asked how high when she said jump.
One doctor was great, the other one would start getting behind with patients because he was in his room gambling, which I'm sure is illegal actually...
So much was expected out of people, while others nothing was expected. 
Overall it was a toxic workplace that caused my mental health to go down the drain to the point where I was in hospital once or twice, but even with doctors notes I'd get in trouble about it yet the practice coach will tell you shes "a mental health advocate".
 And one more side note just to show how mean and shady the PC was, when I was let go I applied for EI and she decided to tell the person "investigating" that I was very unliked in the clinic, I made no personal friends there, the other coworkers always were going to her for complaints about me...as I was friends with multiple people there and literally have lunch dates with them. She also told a coworker of mine that I wasnt getting a raise because of my husbands personal income (which I could have went to the labour board about and was tempted but she likes to threaten people with court so)

Working at this clinic has been a wonderful experience. Although I was nervous at first, the team was very supportive and made me feel like this is something I can do. They offered more than enough training and as I continue to be trained in other aspects of the clinic, I feel confident I will keep getting better. 

I spend my days helping patients get checked in and gathering data during pretesting, and making patients feel comfortable. As someone who always wanted to work in the medical field, this job has offered me the time to help people which is my biggest passion. I have learned so much about different kinds of glasses, different machines that monitor and are used during eye tests, as well as finding frames that people love when choosing glasses. Working with kids is my favourite as well, and teaching them about the machines and making them feel happy and comfortable makes me feel so warm inside!

The hardest part of the job would just be how busy it gets so fast since the clinic is quite small! However, I and my team always make sure everyone is heard and take it one step at a time to make sure everyone gets the best experience as soon as they walk through our doors. The system we use also looks scary at first, but amazing staff at this location were so supportive and made sure they helped me step by step, and now I feel comfortable using it!

The most enjoyable part of the job is definitely all the different people you meet! Hearing about their vision needs up to hearing about how they spend their days using their eyes, you always connect with the patients and feel so important! 

FYidoctors places a strong emphasis on high-quality patient care and thorough optical support. For people who enjoy helping patients improve their vision and find the right eyewear, the work is extremely rewarding. There are also opportunities to support team development, improve workflows, and contribute to a positive clinic culture.

Those who like coaching, training, and continuous improvement will find a lot of variety in their work and will be able to make a real impact. When teamwork and communication are strong, the environment is enjoyable and supportive.

For Opticians who are patient-focused and team-oriented — especially those who enjoy leadership, mentoring, and improvement — FYidoctors can be a very rewarding place to build a career.

They like to hire new immigrants because immigrants dont know the laws nor they will ever complain or say anything; the pay is low and they expect you to leave a few months after starting. They are automating everything so workers are not longer needed. But in the meantime while installing,  you are constantly asked to work on weekends and overtime!. No RRSPs. Their benefits go from 50% to maybe 80% but not 100% on anything. The plant manager is a joke..she is a non technical woman who enjoys parties parties and lots of parties and engages in criticizing workers personalities. In the plant, there are a lot lesbians and there is a heavy Filipino community of workers/groups that act as female ghettos rather than professionals. Work Safe BC and environmental violations are a norm and acceptable by all under the excuse that the industry is small in Canada and unregulated. You end up sniffing on and handling fumes and poisonous chemicals like methanol, lead waste, etc  w/out proper training and/or protection .. the plant ventilation system is a joke and a lot of workers complain of respiratory discomfort but this company is too cheap to install proper ventilation instead they give you a barbecue and tell you with a friendly smile that "we are a family".  Production takes priority over workers health and safety: if you say something about it...you are a problem the problem and that you dont fit in therefore is better if you leave the company on your own terms because you are not happy.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at this company was the thorough training provided.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part about working for the office I was the poor communications between staff, management and the optometrists. I found that there was misleading information relayed to the office manager. There were times that I was pulled aside about information that was misjudged or untrue. I found out that team members were saying dishonest things behind my back to draw attention away from them, and on to myself. I was a very upbeat, positive, great worker there, and I was basically driven out.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very micromanaging. They are not very when referring to patients with english as a second language. I found this very uncomfortable when working there.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fast paced.  This workplace would have been a nicer environment with a different type of management leading. There is alot of multi-tasking and being on your feet as an OA. The pay is very low-grade for the amount of work done in a shift.

The people who work under the company are amazing, however the company will promise you all sorts of support but when it comes to the actuality of it they will do nothing. You can complain to them in person, they will tell you to email them and then never respond to it. You can tell them numerous times that the staff is struggling to keep up with the work load and they will still shove more work down employees throats. They will try and tell a clinic to hire more doctors even though the clinic does not have any more free rooms for a doctor. The fellow staff are the only amazing part there, the ones who work hard made not everyday terrible. The regional pc will try and tell you how to run the clinic when they are only there for 1 hour to see how the clinic runs then go in the back to talk to the pc the rest of the time. They don't care about their staff nor do they care about their customers. You can complain to the regional pc (MV) but she'll ignore you so it's not even worth wasting your energy just don't apply here they won't even pay you a living wage if you work in Ontario.

I started working at FYIDoctors in 2018 as pre-test and thoroughly enjoyed the work. At the time a few of the people I worked with weren’t the greatest but I enjoyed the work. The free glasses and benefits were great as were the doctors in my clinic. The work was fast paced and busy but I very much felt like I could manage and advance. 

I left after 1.5 years for a job in ophthalmology but after 2 years came back. I rejoined at my original clinic in September 2021 and it has been great. The new practice coach is wonderful and the unlikable employees are no longer here, making it a much more relaxed workplace. I do believe that every clinic will vary depending on the doctors and employees. The pace is still fast and I’m mostly working pre-test but I also handle the inventory management now.

The wage, however, is something to be desired. If I was making a living wage I likely wouldn’t leave as I love the office and the work, but seeing as this is not the case I will be going back to school.

As a contract doctor of optometry with FYidoctors,  I enjoy interacting with and examining patients in a clinical environment with the most up-to-date equipment. Our staff and managers are energetic and committed to top-notch patient care and in my opinion strive to make the experience of visiting FYidoctors memorable, enjoyable, informative, and most of all - a value-add to their lifestyle and vision needs. Our FYidoctors culture has continually improved over decades of experience seeing patients of all sorts and needs - we emphasize people over paperwork, and provide empathetic patient care. The hardest part of my job is to witness patients and clients lose levels of vision. Although this happens to some regardless of the high level of care provided either by our clinics or by specialists, it is emotional every time. The best part of my job is when actions we take improve our patients' lives. This motivates me to come to work every day.
