A typical day at work includes greeting customers, scanning groceries, entering PLU codes, bagging groceries to the needs of customers, counting money, almost constant small talk, keeping a neat and tidy till, and other random chores around the store. Some chores include sweeping, putting away products customers don't want back to the shelves, collecting baskets, making sure there is sufficient supply of plastic, paper, and reusable bags at the tills. 
    I have learned many things but the most important is good customer service, always smiling and respecting others. A downside to seeing so many people in a day is they aren't always happy and can take some anger out on you. I've grown a thicker skin thanks to these customers and try to give them more positivity in their day.
    Management is very understanding and caring to their loyal employees. They keep a very positive working environment and are always there for you.
    The staff is great. I've made so many great friends that make my shifts so much more enjoyable. I must say, some supervisors do pick favourites though and some are off till more than others.
    Hardest part of the job at first is getting used to the fast paced environment and trying to memorize the codes, after you're more comfortable the shifts get much easier!
    The most enjoyable part of the job are seeing the "regulars". Some customers always make sure to come to my till and they great me by my name and like to catch up with whats been going on in my life. It's nice to see a familiar face that cares.

Shifts as a cashier are boring and long. You deal with lots of different people. The majority of the customers are rude and they put down your spirit. Working on busy days was difficult and overwhelming especially when only 2 cashiers were present, the line ups would be long and customers would be very impatient. Also, you have to remember/look up the PLU codes for produce which is VERY stressful, especially when there are customers waiting in line. For example, there are so many different types of apples each with their own code. If you accidentally put the code of a different apple the customer will become very annoyed, and it sucks because they don't understand how hard it is remembering all the codes - especially when almost every apple looks the same. Some customers don't remember what type of produce they chose. I learned about managing a cash register, dealing with unhappy customers, communicating with people regularly, and overall a typical work environment. 
Overall, the job is easy but the customers you deal with make it harder. If this is your first job, you will make a lot of mistakes but it's okay. Don't let a customer dishearten you.

1. Typical day at work as a produce clerk: opening department, dealing with back stock, filling, culling, and prepping; same with mid- and closing shift. 
2. Underpaid, overworked, heavy workload: some days you work alone with no help and lift over 50 lbs, and that takes toll on your body and back
3. No extended health benefits; no room for growth and advancement, minimum wage, no store discount
4. Worst management ever: does not listen to employees concerns and complaints
5. You have to deal with rude customers, upset co-workers and lazy co-workers
6. If you give finger to this company, they will take whole hand. There is no appreciation for long-term employees. 
7. Most days is so busy that you are unable to take a break, so you work all your shift with no stops
8. It is very cold in the winter, job is dirty and wet
9. Good for students, retirees and part-timers. This salary will not feed your family
10. The company has high expectations, led by a bunch of older, old-school folks who are afraid of using electronic equipment. 
11. Some co-workers are jealous with no reason and they gossip behind your back 

Over the last few years management, or lack there of, has really gone down hill.  No one has any idea what they are doing at Head Office.  Policies, or lack there of, are not enforced and/or changed on a whim.  

Fairway Market used to be a good company to work for but not anymore.  Company loyalty is not appreciated.  Staff is overworked and underpaid.  For the  last couple of years raises were only issued when minimum wage went up, so if you were already a minimum wage employee, you never really got a raise.  Raises for department managers were stingy, as low as 30 cents. 

When I first started at Fairways, about 6 years ago, I received 3 raises in one year.  They just don’t do that anymore. 

Workers are hired as part time and scheduled 36-40 hours a week and not offered benefits.  While Fairway Market does offer benefits you pretty much have to beg. 

At the store I worked at pretty much the entire staff was miserable.  People who show no work ethic walk all over the manager and the manager puts up with it and the rest of the staff suffer. 

The positives of working there are the customers and most of the staff.

A typical workday includes filling the shelves with grocery items either from the stockroom or directly from a shipment. Most of the time we ahve to assist customers locate the products they need. I learned mush about the Canadian Culture (communication most especially) and the basics of the job of a stock clerk.

I like the practice of management giving us enough liberty to explore our potentials relative to the functions we are assigned. This generates a performance from employees who respnsibly take the challenge from this freedom.

A fellow Filipino mentored me during my first days so I easily got into the group of a mixture of races. We interact during work hours.

The hardest part of my job was my first month when I have to wrestle with the new environment, a new kind of job which I have totally no experience. Once I learned the job, I do not consider any thing hard.

I was very proud of myself when I started to successfully assist customers locate the products that they need to buy.

A typical day at work includes greeting customers, typing in codes, scanning in groceries, handling money, cleaning tills and floors, cheering up unhappy customers, and friendly chit chat.  I love all of my co-workers and most of my customers are lovely.  Many will wait in my line just to talk to me as I can always bring a smile to their face.  I enjoy working in retail and customer service because I love talking to and getting to know people.  Many customers tell me they enjoy coming through my till as I am always happy and smiling; I've been told I am a ray of sunshine.  Interacting with people is my favorite part of my job. However, the hardest part of my job is just knowing I cannot move forward in that particular field.  I also dislike the fact that the company does not reward loyal employees in any way.  I have added to my skill set in my time at Fairway, I am able to turn an unhappy customer into a satisfied one (in most cases), I have become great at multitasking, handling money, and cleaning.

Having worked there for a long time I would not recommend this job unless you only plan on being there for the short term. Management is incompetent in relation to the setup of things. Paychecks are done by actual cheques rather than online, or at least they were when I left. They are flexible with hours which is useful when you are in school or want time off, which is one of the few positives.

Many of the customers are rude and idiotic and over time really degrades your spirit and makes you not care about customer service. My co-workers for the most part were fine to get along with but some of the cashiers called for assistance way too frequently for minor things, which made it hard to get anything done. They also didn't often schedule enough people, or people would call in so sometimes you would close with 2 or 3 people, which also made it difficult to do anything.

I worked for quadra village Fairway Market and I really enjoyed the work culture my co-workers, supervisors are great, and management.
However, I decided to quit because wage is too low. Being standing for about 8-9h daily for $15 per hour is not fair, and just 15mins of break is not enough. Secondly, I was shocked with the lack of kindness of customers, not all but the great majority of them were TOO rude to deal with for just $15 per hour (and get worse after 8pm!) Is a very high paced job, quite stressful so I believe the wage should be higher or at least more competitive.
Also, no discounts at all for buying food which I consider should be the minimum if you don’t give any benefits to your workers. 

I have worked at Fairways for over a year and I am one of the senior employees. Every other shift there is a new trainee and you are expected to train new staff 3-4 months in. Every cashier is expected to work at least one weekend shift a week, though they can be flexible. You are also expected to stand for 8 hours. so I don't recommend if you respect your legs and feet. The higher up management will make you sign very passive aggressive notes on common mistakes made by cashiers, and can be very passive aggressive if you still mess up. There is no perks or anything like that. For 4-5 hours you get one 15 minute break. For 6-7 hours you get two, 15 minute breaks. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Everyday was welcome like family we worked the floor together and got out all the fresh produce we worked very hard to keep it 
Looking perfect and appealing to the public we gave great customer service and went above and beyond 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The rotting veggys pulling them out going through everyday pulling out and rotating stock sure kept us on our toes , busy times customer service was a challenge due to short staff but most people understand

There was a big language barrier most spoke Chinese was hard for us English folks
