Fanshawe College

I am currently working at Fanshawe College as a Focus Group Coordinator.  I am on a part-time contract, therefore, I only work 24 hours per week.  My typical day consists of me coming in and meeting with different departments about certain focus groups they want, for example, program reviews. After checking with the departments I start the process of organizing the groups by sending out reminder emails and mass invites.  After conducting the groups I have to report back to my manager and give them updates about the group as well as the meeting notes.  This type of research has proven to be very valuable for research purposes so there is definitely a need for it.  I also help with research projects on the side.  The hardest part of the job is that nobody has ever organized these focus groups successfully before so I don’t have anyone to give me advice as well as proper resources.  The management is great and always helpful, however, because this is foreign territory it is hard for them to give me suggestions on how to improve---it is a lot of trial and error which can be frustrating.  My coworkers are wonderful and always helpful, however, even though I am part of team I sometimes feel alone in my projects.  I need to add to my experience and widen my career horizons.

There was no typical day, each day brought its own challenges and rewards. However, in general I would reconcile and maintain the revenue processing and collection from operations, manage and distribute disbursements, provide general ledger maintenance, among month-end and year-end financial reporting duties.

I learned how different individuals of a team will work with different approaches to a task and at different speeds/priorities. The best strategy I learned was to cultivate motivation for a common goal to maximize results.

Management was amazing! Very receptive in all respects.

Co-workers were a pleasure to have worked with, each colleague brought with them a different valuable skill sets and helped shape the team for success.

I would have to say that the hardest part of the job was to ensure deadlines were met, by balancing my schedule with that of the other management teams to ensure timely and accurate information was captured for reporting and internal control purposes.

The most enjoyable part of the job was by far the youthful exuberance in the office. Each and every day was fueled by enthusiasm among supportive co-workers.

A typical day at work would include: organizing and repairing studio equipment, completing printing requests from students and teachers in a timely manner, putting finished prints into correct folders, kept a clean and organized work environment and helped teachers out with small tasks. 

   In my experience, I learned how to manage time more efficiently, how to better interact with students, faculty & client and how to organize the workplace better.

   Management and my co-workers were great. Both of my supervisors were patient and willing to help when I was learning new things, gave encouragement where it was needed and I would have to say that out of all of my working experiences, this job was by far, the best I have ever had. Both of my co-workers were a pleasure to work with and were both friendly and very professional.

   The hardest part of the job, but also my favourite part of the job was organizing the studios and repairing the equipment. It made me very pleased to help my fellow classmates by having a clean, safe and friendly environment to do their projects and bring clients in for photography.

A typical day at work involves providing educational assistance (note taking, tutoring, and coaching services) to special needs students enrolled in Fanshawe's Environmental Technology, Applied Health Sciences, Nursing, and General Arts and Science Programs.  My areas of specialization were mathematics and the physical sciences (chemistry and physics).  I learned that every student is unique, and many students learn course material at different rates.  Time management is key especially during midterm and final exams season since many students are stressed out during this time, and it was my job to minimize their stress by effectively tutor and coach them as part of the preparation process for the given midterm.
The hardest part of the job is breaking down concepts and theories into simpler ones that students can process in order to successfully solve a given problem.
The most enjoyable part of my job was witnessing students successfully achieve their academic goals.

Contract faculty are used to get as much work for as little pay as possible I think. About 80% of faculty are contract. Most contract leave after a short time because of no stability and  you can end up working 2 sections of students for a total of 6 hours pay while full time work 3 sections of students for a full-time pay.

Contract faculty are only paid for contact hours. You prepare classes, exams, mark, make content and answer questions for free because the college pretends you only work 6 hours max because of union rules. They can  increase class sizes with no increase in pay. They can give you whatever schedule they want. When you start, they give you the syllabus and you figure out the rest.

If you can get into full-time it can be great. Most postings you see for full-time positions are really written to be filled by some current person who got lucky to move to full time. They won't even look at your application if you are not the person they wrote for. No way to know which it is.

Full-timers know that you are in a bad situation as a non-full timer, and they are very quick to write people off if they aren't entertained.  Ironically, most wouldn't get hired full-time as they wouldn't compete for a full-time position, but they got in before things went neoliberal.  Oddest workplace vibe that I've ever encountered.  Job itself is pretty good, but I'd say stay away as it could suck years of life away from you without proper financial compensation.  I wouldn't give it more than two years if you must.  It is literally a good part-time job now.  The union has ruined the profession, making it 80% part-time work which is a complete reversal in the last 20 years. 
There are people there who've been getting strung along for over ten years with the promise of making an average income some day, and it will never come, many will die in poverty.  You've been warned.

A typical day would consist of arriving about 30 minutes before the exam period started in order to go get the proper exams and arrive at the designated classroom or gym. I would hand out exams and go over the rules to the students about academic misconduct and cheating. Once the exam started, I am responsible for walking around to make sure students do not have aids or anything that could be used to help them cheat while writing the exam. Once the exam is finished, I am responsible for collecting the exams and bringing them back to the head of the department. The hardest part of this job would be that if someone is cheating or looking around a lot, then I would have to keep a close eye on them. If I saw someone cheating off of some other student, then I would have to take their exam away and they would receive a zero. The most enjoyable part of this job would be interacting with other invigilators and learning how they enforce rules.

Extraordinary working environment, superbly professional team at all levels. Fantastic and permanent opportunities for upgrading and acquiring new skills.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Other than unfair government response to the needs of post-secondary education, there is only positive stress derived from successful academic planning and delivery.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
One with all the challenges and demands of guiding our future generations on their way to future employment .

Indeed is a great place to work. Like any company that goes through massive growth in a short period of time, there will be challenges; like culture shift, obfuscation of vision at different levels of management and inconsistent planning. However during the 'teenage' years, we're getting over some of those growing pains and really coming into our own and re-establishing our culture, clarifying our goals and delivering clear plans to be successful.

Everything used to be extremely fun and carefree, but things always were when you were a kid! Now that we're growing up, things are a little more serious, but that is critical to continue to evolve as a business.

Additionally, in context of a global pandemic, Indeed is consistently exceeding expectations of how it is supporting its employees, communities and clients and I am truly proud to be a part of this group.

Don't even think about accepting a part-time or sessional work assignment. You are paid half what partial load or full time profs get and you're expected to do the same amount of work. And they offer you the WORST classes that no one else wants to teach so you throw in the towel after teaching one term. Fanshawe has ZERO interest in keeping professors around. It is a constantly revolving door. They don't care about anything as long as there is an uninterrupted flow of international student tuition flowing in. 

Teaching can be rewarding. Marking is terrible and is "included" in your hourly rate. I have heard stories of professors making $5/hr once they figured in all their marking and prep time.
