I am now a former employee unfortunately.  I loved working at FastFrate. The work was different from one day to the next. There were challenges to keep me busy so I didn't get bored in my role. I dealt very closely with outbound operations and very much enjoyed everything the dock staff was willing to teach me. All employees cross Canada are a delight and willing to teach and help in any way they could even though our work loads were very heavy. 

Management for the most part is the same.  They will help and teach you as much as they can when time permits. Unfortunately for some of the longer standing management they don't seem to be moving along with the times in regards to teaching or giving you the opportunity to be sure you are understanding what they are advising you.  With that, you end up having a feeling that you don't know what your doing. Instead of allowing for clarification because some questions asked are not in regards to your department they tend to get upset that you don't know and should due to years of service.  When trying to clarify some long standing management seems to think your questioning their authority but you are just questioning to understand to provide the correct information that they are requiring of you.

Pay and benefits are okay. Benefits, regarding medical and dental are fabulous. Pay.....well that does not fall in line with the industry now that I am in it again. They are not compensating the office staff as well as they should be. Union employees seem to be with in industry standards. Office staff not much job security.  Sometimes seemed like management prefer to have a warm body in the chair no matter if work was being completed properly or not. And for those that valued the job and the customers were treated the worst. Persons that wanted to perform thier jobs to the best of their abilities and ensure that not only the customer was looked after but all information was provided in the system for others to access if more issues arose do not seem to be treated well in the West. No incentives. 

With all that said.....I would probably work for FastFrate again. I loved my job, the people I worked with here in Calgary as well as the people I dealt with cross Canada. And of course the customers.  Even when they had issues for the most part they were wonderful to deal with as well.

Working at Fastfrate Orleans has been an enriching experience, I can say without a doubt that the care and appreciation from co-workers and higher-ups is highly appreciated and rare commodity in some work environments.

I learned vastly about deliveries and how stressful situations are always a possibility that must be prepared for and to not let them get you down. This job really opened up my eyes to how the delivery system in the modern world really takes place.

Hardest part of the job is proofreading your work, there is much importance placed on triple-checking your work in this job, and when you make an error it is not a pleasant time.

Most enjoyable part is definitely the people you get to work with, the drivers, desk-workers and especially the boss are all great people who are very accommodating to fresh blood and a new face. They are also very knowledgeable people, after spending a month there, trust me, you will learn all sorts of useful things about trucks, engines,  etc.

I enjoy the actual job of loading & unloading containers of freight,and either having to stage or trans load the items being unloaded. It can be hard work (depending on the freight being unloaded, but I've never been afraid of hard work.The people are good to work with and get along with pretty much everyone.
       
   The only issue with the management is that there are too many supervisors overseeing everything for the amount of staff unloading truck containers. Micromanaging was a huge issue when I started but is now slowly improving. Job security and the lack of a formal orientation is the company's 2 other big flaws.It's literally a guessing game as to whether there's work from day to day as it all depends on the shipments coming in on freighters from China. It's actually a feast or famine working environment, either very busy or very slow

Having a forklift and reach truck certificates means nothing here. I had to mostly work with my hand and feet loading and unloading trailers, and worked under pressure and bullying supervisors.
The supervisors looked have been running with the system for long, have no interest for improvements, but keep giving pressure, though in many instances we were not certain what, when and how to execute the loading/unloading operations.
With such pressure, poor system and bad supervision, breakage or damage rates of the merchant goods look high. Especially for the garment products which to my opinion is not acceptable.
The hardest part of the job was to unload a trailer alone, only using your hand and feet.
This is not an environment that people can expect skills, know how and career improvement, and respect each other.

In this function I work directly with the customers, and I provide a liason for the customers to all the different departments. I work closely with the Operations, Dispatch, Rates, Claims, OSD and many other departments. 

The hardest part of the job is being able to get resolution after the first call.  I have been told by my customers that I provide them great support and am definitely the go-to person when issues arise.

I manage roughy 200 e-mails a day, 30-40 phone calls a day on average and multi-task between desks (to cover vacation/sick days) etc. I am a fast and efficient reader and can get through my day's work on time during my shift.

In my department there are approx 6 people and we all get along and assist each other when required.  We are all cross-trained to manage each other's desks in the event of absence.

Very toxic. Management BULLIES staff to the point of severe anxiety & excessive mental stress. They have no idea how to manage people, run a company, or manage their staff.  Ridiculous and absurd expectations, while their service levels are a complete joke...customers leave this company faster than they start because they do not operate or have anywhere close to the service levels that other competitors offer. 

My typical day at work consisted mainly of, off loading ocean containers filled with Canadian Tire product and loading into larger volume trailers, which required me to count amounts, paying attention to what I'd need from one side to the other to take up as much space as I could, so that in turn our productivity numbers would improve, taking care not to damage either product, trailer or machinery used. Towards the end of my stay at this job we were going through different management, and it resulted in me leaving due to poor morale, I felt that the lack of respect, and the need to require new skills were essential to the development of myself. The hardest part of my job was and is leaving and missing the feeling of productivity.

If you are looking for a place to start Fastfrate is an excellent place to break into the transportation industry. The wage offerings are a bit below par on average. The opportunity for training and advancement is very high and promotion from the internal ranks is commonplace. This also accounts for the high percentage of flexible and cross trained individuals. There is a trend for salaried employees to donate extra hours to the cause as part of the corporate culture on all levels. Many of the employees have been there a decade or more and are very helpful and supportive to each other.

Unfortunately learning what anxiety was and feels like for a first time was something I hope to never go through again. A couple of co-workers (not in the dept I was) who were absolutely great in teaching and patience for questions along with the operations Manager (Mark Lang) were the only good things about this place. 0 moral overall for the entire place. The senior person in my dept should not be kept at any job place where they have to deal with co-workers, absolutely atrocious behavior which has caused the company a large turnover rate. Cross training is highly needed at this business. Hopefully it started to happen after I left.

On an average day show up, punch in, then get paired up and told our job for the day. Learned weight limitations for containers, and how to get the best load for space provided. Co-workers were a mix some really good workers, and some who tryed to slack so average i assume. Hardest part would have been certain cargo we had to transload, examples are tires, dollys, and weights had to be moved by hand, opposed to easier cargo such as air compressors and barbecues which are easily moved which clamp lifts. Most enjoyable would have to be simply using the forklifts and clamplifts, as well as finishing the can in less time than predicted.
