Upon getting the call and phone interview, everything seemed great, in person interview in Fort Mac was great also.  Being new to site was a challenge and the person they put me with was less than happy to have to train anyone and kept talking about leaving the company to go work for Suncor.   
I have no Idea what happened but weather it was jealousy or something else, I no longer had a job after being with my mentor for only a few shifts.

I can only imagine what this mentor girl had to say about me, but I never heard from anyone.  Management did not tell me what, if anything was wrong.....I never drove that size of truck, nor did I ever work there before, so I didn't know my way around the site.   

Working for other companies at the same site and taking to people about working for Clearstream, when this "trainer girls" name up, they said that no-one passed probation driving with her and the company wondered why none of her trainees made the cut.....they finally stopped putting people in the seat beside her for ride alongs.   

Management turnover is high and backstabbing is apparent.....the girl mentoring me reported anything and everything to Suncor in hopes of getting hired on by them and I didn't like the "rat system", I wondered what she would say about me when she was doing that to everyone else. 
She disclosed to me that she had applied twice to Suncor but never was hired.   I watched one fellow make it right to his 3 month anniversary day, just to be fired that day...it was disgusting to see how they played with peoples lives, I felt sick for the guy.  If he needed more training or even to be told what he could improve, and low level employees knew his fate before he did........I even knew and I was brand new there, I have never seen a more unprofessional company. 

I expected more truck and site training and a better qualified trainer in the seat.   I guess the way they hire so many people it is common for it to be a revolving door.  Hard to believe they are hiring for Fort Hills as soooo many were laid off due to Covid and low oil. 

If you have a choice, find a better company, one who values people and invests in their success.     I ended up back at site working directly with Suncor ( imbedded) and had a great time there, you can't pick your family, but you sure can pick your employer !  My Suncor Foreman was great !



I worked here for a year and was never feeling confident that this was long term employment.  As a payroll admin i spent several hours each week processing ROE's.  There was a lot of constant changes with the admin staff.  For some unknown reason the company tends to utilize the temp agency Robert Half/ Accountemps which tells me they don't care about employee's they would much rather have an agency deal with their employees. This way they don't have to provide any severance pay or lay off notice.  This is a clear indication of the type of environment they are.  In fact one of their HR dept employees has a fiance that works for Robert Half.  How convenient.

They don't have any long term employee's in their payroll dept at all. The longest employee currently is less than 2 years. For a company that has been around for 40 years this seems unusual and it should be a red flag. 

I did notice that no one is confident about how long their jobs will last.  Seemed like everyone was always concerned about loosing their jobs. Not a good environment to be in.  With atmospheres like this it tends to breed brown nosers that end up being back stabbers trying to protect their own positions by constantly bad mouthing their co-workers to their boss.  Who the heck wants to work with these kinds of people. 
The payroll depts idea of socializing with their co-workers ends up being hours of useless conversation such as who is watching what series on Netflix, Whats everyone cooking for dinner and where to buy clothes.  Thats how narrow minded the staff is.

If you are looking for a pleasant environment to work in stay away from this company.  You have to spend 40 hours a week at your job so choose wisely as this can feel like 80 hrs if you are working with small minded co-workers

Went too their MEG 2 project in Conklin in September 2012 with promises of over a year of work and the best camp in Alberta with flights but the five star camp is full of office staff  who get priority. also met a few well connected green hats who had no experience and started later, but were sent to the nice camp right away while we (experienced JM) were put up in a hole called MEG 2 camp,  and the flights , well only office staff got flights and the rest took the bus, and they were once again laying off by Dec. They lied through thier teeth to keep guys from leaving just to lay them off middle of dec 2012, with little hope of finding a job until well after the holidays.   

The site was severely disorganized, all too often  one or two crews would be halted by another crew due too poor planning. This contributed too the very low moral. Many of the foremen, GFs and up had jobs based on thier relationships even if they were greatly lacking experience . It was very obvious to everyone the management team was of very poor caliber and instead of accepting responsibility  the blame was passed down the line in the morning meetings
We called the weekly safety meeting demoralizing meetings as it sucked the little energy out of the craftsmen. 
 I do not expect to be treated like a king, and I can take a good deal of BS from an employer, but they had very little respect for good craft workers, therefor I want to help others avoid wasting thier time with the incompetent project management team employed by flint, hopefully URS cleans up flint a bit and employes a much more positive management team in the future. It sounds  like the surmount job is even worse, yikes!

A typical day at work is very busy first thing in the morning but is more steady after our first coffee break. I learned how to use all of my senses when running a welding machine. I am better with my attention to detail. I was taught how to take pride in my work and how to fix little things by myself without running to our maintenance guys for help all the time. Management now is a lot different then it was seven or eight months ago. We had a change in management. They are more organized and dedicated to making our work place better and safer. They are easy to talk to and are willing to help you when you ask for help. Right now I only enjoy working with some of my co-workers, I think that there are too many girls with nothing to do for twelve hours and that can cause some problems. The hardest part of my job is having to preheat our pipes after every break. It gets very hot in the shop and it feels like you are preheating more than you are welding. Other then that I find it very easy, but I have also been there for three years and know what I am doing. The most enjoyable part of my job is when I finish a bend and I feel a sense of accomplishment and knowing that all my hard work, along with the other people working on that bend is going to be put to good use. It makes me feel like I am a huge part of the oil industry even though we are just welding.

I joined this company as one of their few GIS technicians, and initially, things seemed promising. The first few years were great—steady work, supportive leadership—but everything unraveled when my managers left. I found myself under the thumb of toxic management, particularly from the BC office. Their condescension and outright rudeness made an already challenging environment unbearable.

By November, a significant portion of our staff was laid off, including the remnants of the Alberta office. All of the GIS techs, myself included, had no choice but to leave. The work model was unsustainable: we were paid only for billable hours, and with the loss of so many clients this year, there simply wasn’t enough work to keep us afloat. Despite promises of high salaries—over $40 an hour—it was a hollow offer when weeks would go by with 20 hours or less, or sometimes no hours at all.

The lack of stability made it impossible to support my family. Upper management was apathetic, offering neither the support we needed nor any assurance of improvement. Inevitably, we were all expendable.

Joining the environmental division of this company remains one of my biggest regrets. I wouldn’t wish this experience on any professional seeking stability or respect in their career.

this is easily the crappyest company around I work for them this summer for 1 month in a mod yard in Edmonton just off clover bar road and it was the most disorganized site I've ever seen in my life not to mention all the foreign workers so many people out here can't find work or having trouble getting apprenticeships and they're hiring 1000 thousands of people from other countries I think it's completely disrespectful completely stupid its not always easy to become apprentice sometimes it is sometimes it isn't it depends on the company !all the foreign workers could barely speak a lick of English they wouldn't even put up tape during crane lifts with red ribbon tape it was just the danger zone so many little things happen that I could see someone getting severely injured on that site 1 of my friends work there and he was there for just over a month as well as a lectrician if he left it after a month too! should be mandatory did they put all foreign workers through an English course I even told the safety that it's kinda hard to say you're all about safety when the workers around you can't even understand each other and they start talking in amongst our language when we're doing a crane lift and I'm on the tagline I have no idea what they're saying It really madee me mad

Problem after problem with Flint, starting with Upon hiring I was told I would be started at bottom rate according to my experience. ( 1 year+ ) But when I got to work & spoke to people who had less equipment operating experience than I did, I came to find they were started with mid rate. I brought this up to my leader, nothing was done. I managed to take the loss.

I worked there for 3 years and had health problems my second and third year, where I missed time and was off for surgery. Causing a “trend” of missed time from the past. After my surgery to correct my health problems I hadn’t missed time in almost a year from my last sick day. But apparently that didn’t matter and only the previous years were a regarded as a trend, because when I fell sick with the stomach flu and missed time I was fired. So do not expect to be treated like a person. No one takes into account you showing up early or staying late, because if you miss a day of work they’ll let you go. 
Major disconnect between Management/leadership and haul truck operators. They pick their favourites. And it usually isn’t the experienced operators with 0 incidents.  

Only good thing about working for flint at aurora was the crew, besides that, save your time and apply for other HEO companies that actually care for their employees. 

Starts out seeming like the best job in the world but the smoke and mirrors quickly dissipate and you see it for what it is. They don’t care about you, at all. You’re just a name and number. They make more money off of new hires than long standing employees, so once you’ve been there longer than a year and they decide they have nowhere to advance you (your only option is leadership) they start trying to rub you out. 

Lots of empty promises from the start just to get you to sign on, which you quickly realize aren’t going to materialize. Morale among employees is atrocious. You will be doing the same job as the client on the same crew running the same equipment and get paid a fraction of their wage. The only reason people take the job is to get hired by the client (syncrude), which never happens. They keep telling you it’s coming soon, and then making excuses as to why it isn’t happening. 

The wage is atrocious. It looks good on paper, but it’s all straight time and the only way to make a decent living is by working on your days off, and good luck with that also. 

The only upside to this dreadful company is that most of the crew are great people who look out for one another, despite being miserable. 

Save yourself the trouble and stay away. 

I worked for Clearstream during the 2013 HLU Shutdown in Lloydminster for 60 days. It was a fine experience, excellent morale throughout the crew and onsite office support staff.
Any issues that employees submitted to supervision were resolved to the satisfaction of the employees within a reasonable time frame. A very low attrition rate, and above average retention rate of supervision as well as field crew. Able to develop camaraderie with co-workers and supervision within a relatively short time frame. Just a few days before the shutdown ended, 2 HR staff attended our morning safety talk to offer everyone equal opportunity to apply for jobs starting forthwith at several other projects with intentions of maintaining as many people that wished to continue with Clearstream going forward. The onsite General Foreman worked diligently at maintaining and increasing morale of the Foreman and crew by resolving site coordination issues at the upper level as not to allow any stress to filter down the chain-of command. This alone was very rare, and a welcome site!

Days at work could be long if there wasn't much to do which was the case at the start of the contract. As time went by things got a lot busier. Management were great, very supportive of everyone on the crew. Morning meetings in the crewroom started off as brief summaries of what to expect for the day. this eventually morphed into ridiculous mini presentations from anyone and everyone that was unfortunate enough to get called upon (this was the only thing I didn't like about being there). I refused. Workplace culture was as you'd expect from a diverse crew working in the oilsands. Different nationalities would gather together in their groups during the morning meetings and at breaks etc but everyone got along if working together. Hardest part of the job, as an apprentice, was having to work with so called 'journeymen' who clearly weren't capable as mentors. The pay was great, I didn't even mind the fly in fly out aspect. I loved the varied work though some tasks were repetitive. Our contract ended abruptly due to an industrial accident that rendered the plant useless as an oil production/refining facility so everyone got sent home otherwise I might even still be working for them.
