A typical day of work has me on the phone with vendors to order materials such as Gate valves and pressure piping components. New work orders are constantly flowing in which I receive and review with the site manager. Next i start a field binder that the foremen & crews can work off. This will include compiling a job specific Inspection & Test Plan after engineering, code and client specifications have been reviewed and agreed upon, drafting piping isometrics and outlining critical hold points for NDE, Testing before the next step of the job can begin. Periodically throughout my two week shift in Norman Wells NT, I will be involved in welding inspection, flange bolt up and torque reviewing and witness hydro pressure testing of fabricated piping. As this is a very old plant many jobs pose challenges that are exciting to work with. Some examples are sourcing 30 yr old valve s that do not exist with replacements from over seas countries such as Australia, the UK etc. S then having to get an approved coating vendor set up to internally coat the valves as per client specifications and ship up to site in a timely manner. Since this is a maintenance work on Canadas most northern oilfield the logistics of getting materials by Ice road, Barge or Flight to site in time to meet schedule requirements can be a bit daunting at times. Never the less we have been maintaining ESSOs plant and Oil Field since 2016 and the client is generally happy with my work and our company as a whole as everyday there is something new for us to learn on this site. There is never a dull moment at this job, i am constantly thinking outside the box to get each task completed in a safe and timely manner. I sometimes even run heavy equipment to help our such as a 25Ton loader snowballing the ice roads clear or being a labourer helper building scaffolds when we are in a crunch in this secluded location. I have no problem doing whatever is needed. the hardest part is being away from family for two weeks straight and the most enjoyable is working with a great bunch of guys who rely on me to direct them for what can and can't be done on their day to day work activities and constantly learning new things from all their work experience.

I joined Fluor Canada Ltd as Construct Quality Control Supervisor II, Night Shift. Fluor Canada Ltd. is a world leader in engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction services for Clients around the world. I was assigned to the construction includes Steam Generation Plant, Boiler Feed Water Plant, Condensate Recovery Plant, Process Water Plant, Water Treatment Plant, Condensate Pre-coat Plant, Recycle Water Pump House, Fire Water Pump House, Cooling Tower and Storage Tanks. 
At the beginning involved in the incoming inspection of modules and installation of modules with utmost accuracy on pile caps. Structural steel construction as well as piping. Involved in module settings, checking of lines and levels and supporting construction and production team. Reviewing and logging of AB83and  MDR.

  IN-process inspection of closure welds as stipulated by ASME B31.3, ABSA and as per Succor Specs and documenting. Witnessing pressure tests and documenting, witnessing category 1 and 2 torquing and documenting. 

Conducted welder orientation for new welders and issuing welder IDs and documenting. Reviewed Codes, Project Quality Plan Suncor specifications and organized a training program for new welders. Trained new welders and fitters for better quality production and reduce repair rates.

The hardest part of the job is module setting and inspection of closure welds, and dealing with Old School Superintendents who are least concerned about quality.

The enjoyable part of the job is the amazing growth/progress in production as modularization construction, the plants coming up day by day. Working with experienced Quality Managers and Construction Managers and professionalism.

I extremely enjoyed working with Fluor and JVJC was a great pleasure meeting so many people. Am a good communicator and love the environment. The main goal working with Fluor was team work and collaboration as all trades intertwined with each other. Great project would love to be part of a bigger part of Fluor. They intertwine with the Community and it is of great pleasure to be able to work with a Community and a Phymonical Company. They treat their employees with great respect as it’s the workers who make a Company expand to its greatest potential. I also worked with all the Superintendents General Formans and the Staff of Fluor. Everyone works together which makes a project prosper. I absolutely enjoyed working with all ethic groups and love diversity in a work place. I believe working with Fluor. Had great experiences working with all trades while working with the Cranes. Great people making sure there were no accidents while the Cranes hoisted all working components and I ordered all mechanical and all rigging which was needed to run a job effectively. Without any hazards or accidents. In my opinion Fluor is one of the Best Companies I worked for. 
Would love to return to Fluor.

Fluor as an EPCM has a lot of depth with strong engineering, home office support and a diverse and extensive manpower base to draw from.   Fluor's safety program and culture is also very well supported and the field level safety advisors are second to none.  The Cutbank ridge program was a challenge in that I got parachuted into a struggling project and a client with very high expectations and an accelerated schedule that no one felt was achievable.  Fluor's workplace culture I felt was a bit lacking as a progressive team culture.  The relationship with the works contractor was also very poor.  Turning the culture around, getting everyone to take ownership, look for and push solutions to the many issues and setbacks that come with major construction and still achieving the MC date was something that every single person on that site took away as a personal win and are better for it. 
Achieving this with a world class safety culture and was outstanding.   
Mentoring and bringing a team together is always my most enjoyable part of any project.  Sending those people home unemployed at the end is sometimes the hardest.

Fluor has many systems in place to help its employees best serve the customer's needs.  On top of a wide variety of experience, they also provide desk space to numerous clients so that the work can be easily discussed and reviewed.

My days typically consist of working closely with clients on requisitions. Based on decisions made, my work might also include updating various AutoCAD drawings, attending Process Hazard Assessments, or providing a lessons learned presentation to my co-workers.

The hardest part of this job is the client.  They have a good idea of what they want, but with changes always happening upstream with the process department, the changes can easily result in the control systems department not being at the same state that they originally thought.  These delays or setbacks are understandable, but at times can be frustrating when one has to refine a lot of documents due to say a pipeline size change or relocation.  However, it's understandable and everyone is generally quite accommodating.  

All in all, it's a very enjoyable experience at Fluor.

Typical Day at work was overseeing the workings of the document control department.  Answering numerous concerns addressed to me by way of project management, engineering, IT, site management, procurement and document control staff.  Diplomacy in the weekly management meetings was critical especially when schedules started slipping.  Management was very supportive but firm as the work culture was very business like and cordial.  Coached all departments in the use of the operating systems using POWERPOINT and wrote procedures for formal entry into the project  execution plan based on client and management requirements.  The database was at all times kept current as drawings were reviewed and revised so only the latest versions were available for instant viewing throughout the company regardless of location.  I trained and oversaw the quality of work of document control employees and was tasked in reporting and presenting employee deficiencies for discipline, a task I found very hard.  I thrived in the high paced environment especially when I got praised for effective problem resolve.

Do a shift turnover. Make sure the general foremen were there to attend as well so they could pass on information and paperwork to the crews. Attend toolbox meetings, attendance report. Get out and review job site and make sure workers are being productive. Go back to office to organize more work for crews and remove the road blocks that were handed over to us by the previous shift. Sometimes work on a total different task so that everyone is working. Try to have crews productive and complete welding and punch list their work as they go along. Set up materials and hoardings so the next shift isn't delayed like they do to us. Be professional and lead the project. Because the company has got the wrong upper management. So because of that. Another superintendent and myself used our experience to help the company, the union, workers, and ourselves get the job back on track so we are only having to do it once. It was a hard sell to plow ahead. I had all the crews onboard with what had to be done. Kept having to settle down workers from time to time. Very busy but no thanks from upper management.

I spent 2 years with Fluor Calgary feeling uncomfortable and mistreated. As an inexperienced junior I was led to believe I would become a designer, received the training for the software and was never allowed to use it. I was told not to bother the designers with my questions and year later after my training I was thrown into a busy project and was told I wasn't performing and was even questioned whether I ever attended school.

 I was then told that if I performed badly I would get a bad reputation in the industry and would never find another job. I was given 2 weeks to turn things around, during which time I was given other projects to do, never getting around to improving and nothing was ever explained.

 I spent the next 5 months getting scraps of work which hardly filled my day. I was told by one of the other managers I was set up to fail. I
was also told that unless you're female or a foreigner you'll take twice as long to get anywhere.

 I left shortly thereafter...worst experience of my life.

- Work schedule is 9 hours Mon - Thu and 8 hours every other Friday. 80 hours per 2 weeks. 44 hours week one and 36 hours week two. 

- I've learned a lot about SAP, procurement systems, and material management. 

- In most offices, the corporate culture is good and encourages an atmosphere of knowledge sharing. In my most recent office, this culture has not really been accepted and there is an unfortunate tendency to silo and not share or cross-train.

- In general, the job is not hard, and should not be. The work itself is enjoyable. However, when projects are not bid properly, they end up getting understaffed. For this office, buyers are trying to manage 3- 4 times the number of packages of their US counterparts and I was trying to support 4-5 times the number of buyers of my US counterparts. Because of low staffing levels, project execution suffers and errors are far more frequent than they need to be.

- I get a sense of accomplishment when I help end users solve problems, get their work done, and become more effective and efficient in their jobs.

Worked at Fluor for close to 8 years. Left for a new opportunity in a different part of the country (one where Fluor didn't have offices) due to a family situation. 

The company has a very strong culture that encourages employees to get involved and develop their skills. Fluor was a great place to start out as a new graduate because of all the amazing support, mentorship, encouragement, community engagement, and career opportunities available. Management was very supportive and encouraging. 

The people truly make the company. Fluor hires exceptional people who are committed to safety, integrity, work/life balance, and constant improvement. Fluor has a lot of policies, rules and procedures which are outstanding but at the same time the red tape could get in the way of getting things done in a timely manner.
