A typical day involved navigating unclear expectations, constant validation requirements, and frequent last-minute changes to tasks. Work that was completed thoroughly was often redone without structured feedback, which made it difficult to learn or improve. Collaboration with other teams was limited by centralized decision-making, slowing down progress and reducing efficiency.

I learned how critical clear communication, defined roles, and psychological safety are in a workplace. This experience also reinforced the importance of healthy management practices and proper support systems for employees.

Management relied heavily on micromanagement, subjective feedback, and interpretation of intent rather than objective evaluation of work. Communication often extended beyond professional boundaries, and feedback was sometimes delivered in ways that undermined confidence and credibility.

The workplace culture felt tense and unpredictable. There was a lack of trust, limited autonomy, and little room for open dialogue without fear of negative consequences. Attempts to seek support through appropriate channels were not met with constructive resolution.

The hardest part of the job was the constant need to justify routine work and navigate shifting expectations without clear guidance. The most enjoyable part was the nature of the role itself: communications work and collaboration opportunities, when they were possible, were engaging and aligned with my skills.

Employees are not recognized for their work and the admin/supervisor do not give any support to the workers. Any complaints you express will result on you being unofficially blacklisted from any advancement in your career with them. Everyone is burning out but be careful not to tell them because instead of helping you, they'll treat you like a liability and will find any reason to terminate you. When you start working there, it's great, but you soon realize that working there means a lot of gossip and a lot petty interaction between colleagues. I do not recommend this job unless you really need the experience. And the free food is bad 99% of the time. The only nice thing is the donation events where you can get a bunch of stuff like clothes or shoes in exchange for a small donation. 

Since the changes in management last April, the organization is in the process of becoming a very corporate model . Salary benefits have been reduced. They cut the hourly rate for holidays and they force employees to change their work schedule. Lack of communication with management. They don't listen to employees including on the risks of safety at work. Serious lack of democratic transparency. There have been errors in every pay since April! Hierarchical system that deviates enormously from the mission and values ​​of the organization. It's a shame for the clients who suffer the consequences of that very bad management.

Management lacks ethical stand point, does not take employees seriously when faced with fundamental issues.
Management in place does not support their employees, directors take the credit for their coordinators work.  For a NPO who's mission seeks to help the vulernable, they lack leadership when it comes to their own staff.  Issues have been brought to the board over the years with no change.
Employees choose to be here because it is important to them, they choose that over the money and that's why we stay but when upper management ridicules its staff its leads to a global organizational issue.

The clients, coworkers, and volunteers  make going to work worth while.  It at times can be a very dangerous place, as some clients can be verbally/ physically agressive. Salary is extremely low for the dangers and stressors you will encounter.  There was no real basis on how salaries worked.  Favored workers received higher salaries, regardless if they had experience or not.  Very difficult to advance unless you are favored. 


Chez Doris has a team of passionate and dedicated professionals and a great mission.  Management ethos is solution oriented and dynamic.  I like being part of an organization that truly makes an impact in our community.

Good thing is, there will never be a full moment, it is rock n roll there. Intense clients, intense work load, but fantastic frontline workers. There is room to move and work in different departments. 

I wanted to work with the people but ended up doing more like domestic tasks.  Management is disconnected from us. Had to put limits to get respected from clients and co-workers. Also the constant fear of bringing bedbugs at home. No one needs such amount of stress in their lives.

Loved working with this clientele.  
Cheerful environment. 
Difficulty integrating with the team.  Clickish, favouritism, unfair treatment based on biases.  
No encouragement or support in the learning process.

I love working at Chez Doris, the organization's mission and staff make the experience rewarding and fulfilling. I highly recommend Chez Doris as a great place to work, as I have had many meaningful experiences there.
